SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was injured by a hit-and-run driver early Sunday while walking on the curb line of a street in the Midway District.The victim was walking at 2:56 a.m. in the 3800 block of Camino Del Rio West when an unknown vehicle struck her and fled the scene, according to Officer S. Foster of the San Diego Police Department.She was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries, Foster said.The Traffic Division of the police department is investigating the hit and run. 497

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Circulate San Diego released a report today detailing how cities in southern San Diego County can make progress toward eliminating traffic deaths.The report outlined ways in which Imperial Beach, National City, Chula Vista and Coronado can prevent fatal traffic accidents by making improvements to the cities' most dangerous intersections and roadways.Circulate San Diego suggested the cities should take steps to calm traffic flows like restriping roadways to narrow them and reduce speeds. Circulate also recommended that the highlighted cities should asses driving behaviors that lead to serious injury and fatal car accidents and work with local law enforcement officers to target those behaviors through education and traffic law enforcement."Every city has room for improvement to make streets safe and we look forward to working with each South County city to save lives,'' said Maya Rosas, co-author of the study and the organization's director of policy.The report is part of the organization's participation in the Vision Zero campaign, which aims to eliminate fatal traffic accidents altogether. Circulate San Diego and the city of San Diego have already set a goal of eliminating traffic deaths in the city by 2025.The organization made similar recommendations to the city of San Diego last year and the city subsequently repaired its 15 most dangerous intersections. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Barrels holding an unknown substance were found on a Rancho Pe?asquitos sidewalk today, and San Diego Fire-Rescue investigators were looking into it.The unidentified drums were found unattended around 9:30 a.m. on Kika Court near Mercy Road.Hazmat crews took samples from the drums but were unable to determine what substance was inside, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Jose Ysea said.Investigators left the scene, and a contractor was called in to remove and dispose of the material. 510

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was stabbed in the hands and pistol whipped in North Park Saturday after refusing to carry drugs from Mexico into the United States, police said.The victim, 49, was pressured by six friends earlier in the day to transport drugs from Mexico across the border, but he refused, said Officer Tony Martinez of the San Diego Police Department.They saw him later at 3 a.m. Saturday in the 4000 block of 30th Street, Martinez said."They got into a confrontation with him, and during the confrontation the victim was stabbed in both hands and pistol whipped," the officer said.The victim received a laceration to both hands and a laceration to the top of the head from being pistol whipped, Martinez said.The main suspect was a man known to the victim, he said. The other suspects were three men and two women. They all fled in a white Kia SUV with Mexico plates.Mid City Division detectives will be handling the investigation. 950

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was killed when she walked into the path of two marked police cruisers in the Hillcrest community of San Diego, police said Sunday.The vehicles were going westbound in the 100 block of West Washington Street when the woman, standing on the north curb line of the street -- and not in the crosswalk -- walked into the cruisers' path a little after 11 p.m.Saturday, the San Diego Police Department reported.She was struck by both cars and rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. 540
