CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- As businesses fight to survive during the most restrictive purple tier, one industry says they feel forgotten.“We don’t seem to be able to move forward,” said Alita Fernandez, marketing director for Play City in Eastlake.Play City is an indoor playground full of inflatable jumpers and bounce houses. It was used to being filled with kids and their families—now, it sits empty.Fernandez said they planned to reopen by January with increased safety and sanitation measures. However, with most of their employees temporarily laid off, the county in the purple tier, and the PPP loans gone, the future does not look good.Indoor playgrounds will not be able to reopen until the least restrictive yellow tier, per state guidelines. At that time, capacity can only be at 50 percent.“I don’t know if Play City will stand, if we will be able to keep our doors open or to open back,” Fernandez said, fighting tears. “We do not know.”She said in the meantime, the bills keep piling up.Fernandez is hopeful a vaccine can help turn things around. She urges government leaders to look at all industries as they struggle through this pandemic.“Maybe they already have all grown up children,” Fernandez said. “Maybe they can go ahead and turn around and look at us. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista jiu-jitsu instructor pleaded not guilty Wednesday on four counts of lewd acts against a child under the age of 14.Deputy District Attorney Julie Lynn told 10News the alleged incident involving Gabriel Gonzalez happened August 18. It did not take place at the Chula Vista Jiu-Jitsu facility on Third Ave. where Gonzalez worked, Lynn said.The judge issued a protective order for Gonzalez to stay away from two females, whose names 10News is withholding due to the sensitive nature of the charges.Gonzalez’ bail was also increased to 0,000. 606

CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- Students in the south bay could get free lunches this June. The Sweetwater Union High School District announced Monday that its popular meal program is making a comeback. Called the “Seamless Summer Feeding Program,” free meals are being offered for most of June. According to the district, the free meals are available to anyone 18 and younger. The program runs from June 10 through June 28 Monday through Friday from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. The free lunches are being offered at Montgomery High School and Sweetwater Union High. According to the district, no registration is needed. “Just come and enjoy some great food,” a flyer from the district reads. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Chula Vista police investigators are searching for clues in the fatal shooting of a 52-year-old man early Saturday morning.Officers responded to a report of gunshots at around 5:08 a.m. in the 900 block of Agua Tibia Avenue, a few blocks west of Cook Elementary School.A witness led officers to a residence where gunshots were believed to have originated, according to CVPD Lt. Dan Peak.Peak said when officers entered the home, they discovered the victim on the ground with a gunshot wound."Officers attempted life saving measures on the subject and despite resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the scene," said Peak.The victim has been identified as Dean Tinsley. No further information about the victim was released.Peak said there is no known motive for the slaying at this time. CHULA VISTA (KGTV)-- It was back to school--virtually--for the Sweetwater Union High School District. They are the first school district in the county to start the year.Some parents said the one issue they ran into was technical problems. Gina Chavez, a mother of three and an elementary school teacher, said two of her three kids dealt with issues getting started. She said day one was "crazy."“My daughter started the day without an advisory class and no code for her science class,” Chavez said.Her other daughter couldn’t log onto her iPad, issued by the school district. “We had to scramble. I got my work computer, was able to log her on that way. [I] had to do a trouble ticket.”Two of her children have special needs and are on IEPs, individualized education programs. There still some question about how that will be handled in a remote environment.“I still haven’t heard anything as far as how they are going to specifically address his goals. I’m still waiting and if I don’t hear by the end of the week, I will be reaching out to figure that out,” Chavez said.A district spokesperson said roughly 9,400 devices were distributed last week. The majority of students were able to hold on to their devices from last year.Regarding technical problems, spokesperson Manny Rubio acknowledged the issues, but said the “issues are being resolve fairly quickly.”“It seems as though the great majority of students were logged in and had access to their classes,” Rubio wrote in an email to ABC 10News. “We do have our IT staff as well as school site staff available to answer questions and resolve issues.”Under the distance learning model, students are block schedules with three classes per day. There will be 30 to 45 minutes of virtual face time with the student’s teacher. The remaining time will be independent study, according to the plan released by the district.“I feel like I was torn in three different directions this morning trying to help every child get where they needed to be,” Chavez said. “If I had work today… I think I would have been in tears.”Chavez said she hopes the glitches get resolved by the end of the week.The Sweetwater Union High School District is facing many challenges, including a roughly million budget shortfall.An audit of the district conducted by the independent state agency Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) showed there was enough evidence that fraud or misappropriation of funds may have occurred within the district. 2491
