Lorenza Marrujo is 67 years old and less than five feet tall — but she's no weakling. An intruder recently confronted Marrujo at her seniors apartment complex in Fontana, California. Not only did she protect herself, but her neighbors, too."As he was coming towards me, I said, 'back off.' Right away," Marrujo said.Marrujo has 26 years of martial arts training, so when she told the intruder to back off, he listened. Unfortunately, he made his way to the apartment of 81-year-old Elizabeth McCray — Marrujo's neighbor."He grabbed me and shook me, and I went down on the floor," McCray said.Marrujo heard McCray's screams and went to help."I squeezed myself between her and him. I put mama on the side, and I jumped on him, and I was punching him and everything," Marrujo said. "And I had the cane against his throat."Marrujo said she didn't want to kill him, so she held him down with her hands."He lifted up and tried to twist my hand. At the same time, I twisted his and turned it around real fast," Marrujo said. "And he was saying, 'you're hurting me, you're hurting me.' And I said, 'I don't care. I don't care what happens to you. You had no right to hurt an elderly person.'"McCray was stunned by her neighbor's bravery."I didn't expect that little lady would be that brave," she said. "I was trembling. I grabbed her by the leg. I said, 'could you be careful; you're gonna kill us.' She said, 'not tonight.'"Police later arrived on the scene and took the intruder into custody. Despite Marrujo's bravery, police say it's not a good idea to attack an intruder."We don't recommend you just jumping in," said Jennie Venzor, a spokesperson for the Fontana Police Department. "We recommend that you dial 911 for emergency assistance, which, in this case, she did that, and she also jumped in. What she told me is that her training kicked in, and it was like a muscle memory. She knew she had to help her friend out."McCray was taken to the hospital for treatment and released the next day. 2001
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California panel has recommended parole for Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, who has spent nearly five decades in prison. The recommendation was made Thursday, although Gov. Gavin Newsom could decide to deny it. Newsom blocked her release once previously, saying she is still a threat at age 70. Newsom's predecessor, Jerry Brown, blocked Van Houten's parole recommendation twice. Brown has said in the past that she has not taken full responsibility for her actions and remains dangerous.Van Houten is serving a life sentence for helping Manson and others kill Los Angeles grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, in August 1969. Van Houten was 19 when she and other cult members fatally stabbed the LaBiancas and smeared the couple’s blood on the walls. 798
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A technical problem has caused a lag in California’s tally of coronavirus test results, casting doubt on the accuracy of recent data showing improvements in the infection rate and hindering efforts to track the spread. State Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said Tuesday that in recent days California has not been receiving a full count through electronic lab reports because of the unresolved issue. The state’s data page now carries a disclaimer saying the numbers represent an underreporting of actual positive cases per day. The latest daily tally posted Tuesday showed 4,526 new confirmed positives, the lowest in more than six weeks. 685
LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s workplace safety regulator has cited a frozen food manufacturer and its temporary employment agency for failing to protect hundreds of employees from the coronavirus at two Los Angeles area plants. California’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued citations this month to Overhill Farms and Jobsource North America and proposed over 0,000 in penalties for each company. The companies could not be immediately reached for comment. Officials say the employers did not take steps to keep workers the required six feet away from each other to prevent the spread of the virus. 630
LONDON — Shares in the company that owns the Regal, Cineworld and Picturehouse cinemas in the U.S. and Britain have fallen as much as 58% after it will temporarily close its venues after release of the latest James Bond film was postponed due to the pandemic. The company said the Bond delay left it with too few blockbusters to attract customers. Cineworld Group Plc said Monday that 536 Regal cinemas in the U.S. and 127 Cineworld and Picturehouse venues in the U.K. will close on Thursday. Some 45,000 employees are affected. The company says that with major markets such as New York closed and no guidance on when they will reopen, “studios have been reluctant to release their pipeline of new films.” 713
