SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Gas and Electric has released a list and map of areas that may be affected by planned power outages amid Santa Ana winds. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning from noon Thursday through 6 p.m. Friday for the inland valleys and mountains. East to northeast winds are expected to reach 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts as high as 50 miles per hour and isolated gusts as high as 60 miles per hour. To make matters worse, humidity is expected to range between 5 and 10 percent with poor overnight recovery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police investigated Wednesday threats made against multiple professors at University of San Diego. A flyer with gun crosshairs was slipped under the office doors of two professors, USD confirmed. The threats also included flyers with the professors’ names and pictures, calling them fascists and urging students to boycott their classes, 10News learned."A professor took responsibility for the flyers and the inappropriate behavior. The individual was suspended, removed from campus and is not permitted to return to campus or participate in any USD-related off-campus events while we conduct our investigation and initiate next steps. The professor has complied with these directives, has not returned to the campus, and to our knowledge, similar inappropriate behavior has not occurred," USD officials said.University officials said they notified San Diego Police upon learning about the threats last week. However, a police spokesperson said they just learned of the threats and opened their investigation today. At 4 p.m., faculty gathered for a meeting with administrators to learn about the situation. About the same time, students gathered in front of the Theology and Religious Studies building, saying they weren’t told about the threats. “The university has a duty and an obligation to protect public image. They have probably legal obligations, I'm assuming. But they also have an obligation to the student body. They have an obligation to make sure that we feel safe, that when I walk on this campus I'm aware if something's taken place that's put my safety or my professor's safety in danger,” said senior Alexa Withrow. A campus-wide email was sent out later Wednesday afternoon, telling students, "the Department of Public Safety and the San Diego Police Department were immediately contacted, an investigation was initiated and a communication was sent to the College faculty."Counseling was made available to students.One of the USD professors received a temporary restraining order against Associate Professor Louis Komjathy. The documents name Komjathy as the one responsible for the threats and say he was upset about a promotion he was denied. The restraining order was filed on September 6 and said the flyers had been found on September 1.There is a court hearing about the restraining order scheduled for September 26. 2379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans could soon be using just their faces to board a plane, a cruise ship or get into a rock concert.It's because more companies are testing, or rolling out, the controversial facial recognition technology. "Facial recognition is great if it works. If it doesn't, it produces problems," said Stephen Cobb, senior security researcher at ESET. A Ticketmaster-owned company will soon test facial recognition to get people into events faster. In other words, a person could theoretically upload an image of their face onto an app, and then go right into the event without stopping for a ticket scan or, potentially, a security check.Jet Blue rolled out the facial recognition technology last year, and Royal Caribbean cruises is starting to do the same. "It sounds alright but it also sounds kind of weird to have your face in there," said Kathy Nagy, who used a mobile ticket to get into Wednesday's Padres game. "I think that having a ticket on your phone is just as fast as showing your face."Cobb said there are many concerns over how companies will maintain and protect people's data, including even whether they have the capabilities to avoid breaches."I don't see any commercial roll out of facial recognition which is purely around efficiency," he said. "Frankly, I have doubts around efficiency of the technology at this point."U.S. Customs and Border Protection is already using facial recognition technology at Lindbergh Field to scan international arrivals. The San Diego Police Department uses a mobile facial recognition device to confirm identities during certain arrests, such as when suspects won't provide their identity, or provide a false one. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County is seeing far fewer influenza cases at this point in the flu season compared to last year, due in part to coronavirus-related safety measures, according to public health officials.So far this season, the county has recorded 39 influenza cases, compared to 1,220 cases at this point last season. Flu season generally runs from October through May, with flu activity peaking in December and February.The county says it's "very likely" physical distancing, hand washing, and mask-wearing are contributing to the low flu activity."Influenza activity remains very low to date this season in San Diego County. This is very likely due to the social distancing, hand washing, and mask-wearing interventions instituted to reduce the transmission of SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19," the county's influenza report said. Health officials say influenza vaccination rates are also contributing to the lower numbers. So far this season, 1,043,552 San Diegans have been vaccinated for the flu. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer Monday signed an executive order that will allow certain businesses and places of worship to operate outdoors.In light of California’s restrictions on indoor operations and activities, the executive order will permit businesses such as gyms, churches, barbershops and hair/nail salons to “expand their operations into private parking lots,” City of San Diego officials said.The order takes effect immediately, although Faulconer said the state will have to amend its regulations for salons and barbershops to operate outside.Faulconer said, “Right now, we need to give our small businesses every tool possible to get through this difficult time or they might shut down for good. By allowing more and more businesses to operate outdoors, we are delivering solutions to help San Diego’s small businesses get to the other side of this pandemic while putting thousands of San Diegans back to work safely and responsibly with proper physical distancing.”The San Diego City Council will vote on the newest executive order into a city ordinance at a later date.On July 13, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced restrictions on indoor operations across the state as coronavirus cases surged in California.Earlier this month, Faulconer signed an executive order that allowed restaurants within the city to move their operations outside.Notable parts of that order included allowing restaurants to establish sidewalk cafes and use private parking lots for dining. 1503
