BROWN COUNTY, Ind. -- More than 100 birds were removed from a Brown County, Indiana home Wednesday morning after a months-long investigation into a potential cockfighting ring. The Indiana Gaming Commission assisted in serving two search warrants. The investigation has been going on since October 2017 after detectives were given a "derby sheet" that listed the entire cockfighting season with dates, registration fees and potential payouts, a spokesperson from the Indiana Gaming Commission said. The birds were seized by the ASPCA. Three people have been taken into custody and booked into the Brown County Jail.Mark Herrin, Darina Herrin, and Randall Herrin all face felony charges of purchasing an animal for use in an animal fighting contest and promoting an animal fighting contest. Law enforcement in Kentucky is also involved in the investigation. 899

BALTIMORE, Md. - "I never thought that I would be on Facebook again, and going on Facebook is literally what changed my life."It was a lifesaving change for Rachel Rockwell.Her old classmate Kate Corzine would be her agent of change.“After having this condition for 12 years and knowing that I eventually needed to look for a liver donor, the time had come.”Rachel opened up on Facebook about her autoimmune disease, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. It was attacking her liver. She needed a transplant to survive.She and Kate hadn't spoken in about 15 years.Kate, a nurse, and mother of five did her research on live liver transplants answered Rachel's call for help."I approached my husband and said an old classmate of mine Rachel needs help and I think that this is something that we can do. I'd like to offer my help and after hearing a bit more he said, go for it."There was an outpouring of support for Rachel on social media. More than 50 people responded, but Kate ended up being the perfect match.They met for lunch two weeks prior to their Sept. 29 surgery date in the middle of a pandemic."It has been a challenging year for a lot of people and to have this hope that is shared and the joy that comes from it, it's pretty amazing."There's a lot of darkness and for people to see an opportunity for light and then see that happen so abundantly with Kate is very moving."While Rachel's grateful for Kate, both women are grateful for the medical team at Johns Hopkins that made it happen.Their surgeon, Dr. Andrew Cameron says the amazing story of Kate's willingness to share more than half of her liver with a former classmate.... is a testament to the importance of transplants.Their road to recovery is smooth so far.....Kate's liver is regenerating....and Rachel is on the mend with her PSC thanks to her new organ.“I'm on a lot of medication to keep the liver happy, Kate's liver happy, but a year from now it'll probably seem like my liver."While the two shared sisterhood at Bryn Mawr graduating from the girls' school in 1997. Now they consider themselves liver sisters.It's the piece of Kate that's giving Rachel a new lease on life. Behind every stitch and each piece of fabric on the dolls put on display in Washington D.C., there’s a real face and a real story.Activist Marta Perez-Garcia is the creator of the display, and she hopes it will open the public’s eyes to the realities surrounding domestic violence.“I think, because I have too many people around me and I really saw it for so long, I needed to do something about it,” Perez-Garcia says.Perez-Garcia grew up in Puerto Rico and says she regularly witnessed women being abused. She says after moving to the mainland U.S., those stories didn’t stop."It's something that is in the media, that you see that is very close to home,” she says."One in 3 women are survivors of domestic violence and or sexual assault,” says Bakht Arif, who works with abuse survivors. “And that is a lot of people.Arif works with abuse survivors for a non-profit project in Washington D.C. She believes the doll display is one way to grab people's attention but says the conversation should go far beyond this.“Policy is important; legislation is important,” Arif says. “And we will be cheering and protesting for it and cheering for anyone who supports it and brings light to the issue.”The exhibit at the Franklin Reeves building in Washington D.C. was on display throughout the month of October to promote awareness.  But Perez-Garcia says the real voices for change will come from voters in November. "As society, we have to do something about this issue,” she says. “So, if it's to really take people in power to really make the right decisions against domestic violence, of course we have to do that.” 1631

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A Bloomington, Ind. man is accused of holding a toddler under hot water as a punishment after the child soiled his diaper, causing severe burns.The investigation began on November 24, after the 2-year-old boy was transported to Riley Hospital for Children to be treated for multiple severe burns and other injuries.According to court documents, Dennis Tannen, 29, was watching his girlfriend’s son while she was at work when the child was burned.Tannen initially told police that he had put the child in the bathtub and left him for “10 seconds” and when he came back the child had turned on the hot water, burning himself.The child's mother said Tannen called her and she rushed home and found him “outside smoking a cigarette.” She told police that her son had large burn marks on his face that looked like his skin was falling off when she first saw him. They took the child to IU Bloomington Hospital where he was later transported to Riley Hospital for Children.The child was treated for severe burns on his face, lips, buttocks, and genitals. Riley doctors told police that the child also had suspicious bruising on his chest and face and that the child’s injuries did not match up the couple's story. After multiple rounds of questioning, Tannen eventually admitted to police that he was waiting for a phone call when the toddler had a bowel movement in his diaper. He said he became agitated and went to wash the child off in the bathtub, turning the water on “full hot” and holding him under it to wash him off.Tannen told police he also put the child’s face under the same hot water to wash and that the child had slipped when he was holding him and he grabbed him, which caused the bruises on the child’s chest.Tannen was arrested and charged with felony neglect of a dependent. 1833
