SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A medical helicopter transporting a heart from Grossmont Hospital for transplant crashed on the helipad of a Los Angeles-area hospital on Friday.The AgustaWestland A109 medical helicopter flipped onto its side after experiencing a hard landing on the roof of Keck Hospital of USC at about 3:15 p.m., according to a statement from the hospital. Three people on board, the pilot and two medical personnel, escaped without major injuries. Nobody on the ground or in the hospital was injured, the hospital and FAA said. Patient care at the hospital was not interrupted.The helicopter was carrying a heart from Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, according to helicopter service provider Helinet. The hospital said in a statement that the organ was safely delivered to the intended patient in time for surgery.“We are fully cooperating with the NTSB and FAA on their investigations,” said Helinet COO and President Sean M. Cross. “Our company prides itself on professional operation and maintenance of aircraft as core values - the safety of our customers and pilots is always our top priority. We are happy that at this time there appear to have been no serious injuries.”The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.Helinet says it completed more than 1,300 helicopter air ambulance missions in 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local Naval officer is making a plea for tips after thieves made off with some priceless military heirlooms.On Tuesday, Gervy Alota's wife called him after she returned to their home on Linbrook Drive."Just completely ransacked my house...my heart sunk," said Alota.Since there were no clear signs of entry, Alota believes the thieves got in through the doggie door in the back of the home.Among the missing items were several dozen collectible Jordan sneakers and about 15 pieces of jewelry, including Alota's class ring from the Naval Academy.  He calls it a symbol of the start of his 20-year Navy career.  A class ring belonging to his wife - also a graduate - was also stolen. 720

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A local medical spa is coming under fire for offering a coronavirus treatment that costs thousands of dollars but the spa director defends his actions.Dr. Jennings Staley operates Carmel Valley’s Skinny Beach med spa which specializes in treatments like Botox and laser hair removal. He says he’s been dealing with a lot over the last few days.“Death threats. Last Friday, screen shots shared with 10News revealed his new COVID-19 treatment pricing plans which go up to nearly ,000 for a family resistance pack which includes, in part, the prescription drugs and vitamin C. “It just seems to me that it's a way to profit off of people's fear,” says Seattle-area family practitioner Dr. Leanne Kildare. Cold vs. Flu vs. Coronavirus SymptomsWhen she saw the ads, she was stunned.One ad description reads in part, "Dr. Staley will evaluate your symptoms via telemedicine” and "if needed, a nurse or Dr. Staley will visit you at your home" for further evaluation and potential in-home COVID-19 testing and possibly start a treatment pack, which is "now available by prescription only through Skinny Beach med spa." “It doesn’t sit well,” adds Dr. Kildare.“I knew it would be a little bit controversial because there was the controversy around the fact that hydroxychloroquine wasn't approved until Sunday night but I didn't think people would be so angry,” Dr. Staley tells 10News.The FDA gave emergency approval Sunday to distribute hydroxychloroquine to hospitals, despite the potential side effects like heart problems, and lack of studies showing the medication's benefits.“I would not prescribe the medication without seeing the patient and evaluating them first,” Dr. Staley says.He tells 10News that he's treating about 20 patients with possible COVID-19 symptoms and he's only charging a few of them for his services. He adds that he doesn't have test kits yet and he has not yet prescribed any of them the hydroxychloroquine.Dr. Kildare believes it’s irresponsible to offer the drug outside of a controlled hospital setting.“I wouldn't take the risk. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Point Loma grandmother put up Christmas lights to spread cheer during California's stay-home order. It started when Johnene Smith saw Italians singing in solidarity amid a lock down due to the Coronavirus pandemic. She then heard about people putting up Christmas lights to brighten neighbors spirits and something clicked."I'm like I can do that! I don't have to leave my house and people can walk by and see the heart and [spread] just a little joy," Smith said.So she put up a glowing heart in her living room window. "I went and found a piece of cardboard, made a heart and poked little holes and put the lights in it, so they could see my heart is out there for everyone." Smith hoped it would bring some much needed joy during the stay-at-home order which is keeping her from her seven grandchildren. "The youngest is going to be a year old in two weeks and we're not going to be able to go to her birthday party," She said sadly.She took this time to focus instead on what she can control, which is her happiness. Particularly, that means reminiscing about Christmastime, "it was really the last time we had joy before everything started was at Christmastime so why not bring back a little joy in a time where we can't control it."Her display went up Friday sparking her neighbors to light up their own homes.Neighbor Jojo Peters was thrilled at the idea. "When Johnene says let's do lights, I said okay! And I went and dug them out as fast as I could and threw them up!"Both want to spread love and calm.'I just want them to see the hope that's there, and that we're all there for each other,' she said.Smith hopes more San Diegans join in spreading cheer in this time of uncertainty. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Kearny Mesa hotel will be used as a new coronavirus quarantine site in San Diego.The Ramada by Wyndham San Diego North Hotel & Conference Center will be utilized as a new quarantine site in San Diego, according to the hotel.Individuals heading to the location have undergone medical screenings and show only mild to no symptoms.
