When Brooke Harrison picked up her backpack Sunday during orientation day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, there were two things different about it. A blue name tag made out of tape and a bullet hole near the bottom. FULL COVERAGE: Parkland school shooting“(The bullet) could have gone through my backpack, but I’m pretty sure it just grazed it or slightly passed it. The fact that my backpack was so close to me is really mind blowing,” Brooke said.It was left in her freshman classroom where five classmates were shot. Three of them died: Alyssa Alhadeff, Alex Schachter and Alaina Petty. Seventeen people died in total. “We know how lucky we are,” said Brooke’s mom, Denise Harrison. “From the stories we already heard in the classroom, we go pick up the backpack we saw this. Everyday, we’re saying to ourselves, we’re so lucky.”On Wednesday, Brooke and the student body return to campus.“It’s going to be sad because I’m going to remember the fact that three of my classmates won’t be able to go back to school and that three of them won’t be able to see their friends and see that everyone is okay,” Brooke said. Her parents aren’t worried about Wednesday or the next day. They know security will be tight when they return, but beyond that there's uncertainty.“One of the greater concerns that we have is, what happens next?” said Robert Harrison, Brooke’s dad. “When the news cycle ended and six months have gone by, what actions will have been taken to ensure this doesn’t ever happen again? At this school or any other.” For starters, they want more armed school resource officers and a review of code red protocol. “To give ourselves as parents, to give us the ability to know when you drop your kid off, they’re going to be safe,” Harrison said. On top of the friends they lost, they lost their innocence. Every hug and every “I love you” means more now. “Time just feels more precious now. It feels like we have to reaffirm that. I know they love me, and I know I love them, but it feels like we need to say it more now,” Brooke said. Brooke’s parents have been through tragedy before. They lived just two blocks away from the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attack. 2277

With a total of six adopted and foster children, Keri Penland’s family is an exercise in planning and patience.“Trying to do school with them has been insane,” she said. All of her kids are school-aged; some have learning disabilities. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, they--along with tens of millions of other students across the country--became part of a nationwide experiment in remote learning. Her verdict?“I don't know how anybody is doing this, to be honest,” Penland said. “It's not possible.”And it turns out, she's not alone.“We found that remote learning is really failing our most vulnerable learners,” said Justin Ruben, who is with the nonprofit “ParentsTogether.” The group recently conducted a survey of more than 1,500 families across the country to see how remote learning was going.Among the findings:When compared to a family making 0,000 a year, lower-income families--making ,000 or less-- are ten times more likely to have children doing little to no remote learning. Those families are also five times more likely to attend a school not offering distance learning materials at all and 13 percent of them didn’t even have a computer device or internet access.Yet, the numbers were even worse for families of children with special needs, who usually get individualized support at school. Out of those families, 40 percent said that with remote learning, they were receiving no support at all.“A huge chunk of students are being left behind by remote learning,” Ruben said.ParentsTogether wants the federal government to step in with 5 billion more in funding for education, especially since the coronavirus pandemic slashed tax revenues for local and state budgets and, in turn, education programs.“Schools are making budgets right now and kids are falling behind right now, and schools are making plans for the fall right now,” Ruben said. “And so, there's this surreal lack of urgency in Washington, D.C., and there’s literally like a whole generation of vulnerable kids is being allowed to languish.”Back at Penland’s house, it’s been an unusual ending to the school year.“I'll tell you, if school doesn't start again, the kids are gonna be way, way behind,” she said. “It's a different time than we've ever experienced.”Given everything that happened with schools and the pandemic, experts have some suggestions for how to keep kids engaged and learning over the summer.Keep some semblance of structure. A visual schedule that everyone can see will help and make it easier for you and your kids to get back into the swing of things when summer ends.Read to your children or encourage them to read, write or draw--anything that engages their minds, as long as it does not involve a computer or phone screen.Outdoor hikes, walks or scavenger hunts can help kids get exercise and keep them engaged in discovering new things.Make sure your kids get enough sleep and proper nutrition, to keep them in top shape and ready for when it’s time to return to school. 2998

While many think of NASA as the government agency that sends scientists into space, some of NASA’s most important work frequently is used to help people on Earth. In recent months, NASA has used its extensive network of scientists and researchers to combat the coronavirus. And in short order, the agency provided patients and healthcare providers with tools that may have been used to save lives. This week, NASA outlined a number of innovations the agency developed to support the fight against the virus.NASA created an open source for N95 respirators so people can make their own masks by using 3D printers. N95 respirators are unique as they protect the wearer from the virus. NASA’s designs were engineered to meet or exceed standard N95 performance, can be used for different purposes, are compatible with commercially-available filters, and do not disrupt the supply chain. If you have access to a 3D printer, here is how to create an N95 respirator designed by NASA.In addition to NASA’s open-source N95 respirators, the team from Johnson Space Center developed and tested a sterilization protocol to combat a national shortage of N95 masks. This allows N95 respirators to be reused by healthcare providers.“I had a very deep and personal connection to the evaluation (of N95 masks), because my wife is a medical professional… on the frontlines, with only one mask allocated for her to use and re-use daily,” said NASA engineer and project lead Jeremy Jacobs. “She has been very concerned about cross contamination between patient-to-patient and to our family.”Among other innovations, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California designed a new high-pressure ventilator tailored specifically to treat COVID-19 patients. It was designed to treat patients who might not require a full-featured ventilator, keeping the nation’s limited supply of traditional ventilators available, NASA said.NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in California joined several other agencies to create a helmet that functions like a continuous positive airway pressure, commonly known as CPAP, machine to force oxygen into a patient’s low-functioning lungs. 2156
