CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The sister of an Orange County teenager whose pleas for help on Interstate 5 prompted 911 calls is explaining the family’s efforts to take the girl to rehab. California Highway Patrol officials said other drivers reported seeing the girl with her hands and feet tied Monday about 7 p.m. Officers pulled over the Toyota Corolla at south I-5 and Cannon Road in Carlsbad and found the girl restrained with tape over her mouth. The girl’s father told the CHP he and his 21-year-old daughter were driving the girl to a drug rehab facility in Mexico. The sister told 10News the girl was bound because her family didn’t want her to escape. The family was concerned the girl would end up dead. The sister also told 10News the teen wasn’t accepted into rehab in Orange County because she had escaped in the past. The family visited the clinic in Tijuana earlier this month to determine it was safe, the sister said. CHP public information officer Kevin Smale said the father and sister were arrested Monday but the district attorney’s office chose not to book them on kidnapping charges. (KGTV) - The purchase of a dream home nearly turned into a nightmare for a Carlsbad family, as they narrowly avoided a costly escrow scam.In late July, Greg Shoman and his wife were just days from closing on a four-bedroom home when he thought he got an email from his escrow officer with wiring instructions for the down payment to be sent that day. In the email, the escrow officer said she was busy and could only talk by email, before sending him a calculation of the closing costs. "You see so many emails and documents during the process, and you start to become numb to it ... Everything on the email - from the masthead to the signature - looked like the emails we had been receiving from the escrow company during the process," said Shoman.Shoman went to his bank to wire the money. His bank happened to be the same bank the money was to be transferred to, and the bank confirmed the routing number matched a non-business account in Wisconsin, not a California escrow company. After a call to the real escrow company, he learned the emails were fakes."Surprised and angry, and then ultimately relieved you didn't give away several hundred thousand dollars," said Shoman. Shoman isn't alone. According to the FBI, Americans lost 0 million to real estate fraud last year. In many cases, the scammer identifies pending home sales through the MLS and real estate sites and hacks the emails of someone involved in the sale, before sending out false wiring instructions."Be aware, be vigilant, and call your escrow company. Don't be afraid to triple check," said Shoman's realtor, Ilana Huff of Pacific Sotheby's.Shoman says the FBI is investigating his case. He says a closer look at the emails revealed the email address in the scam message was different from the email address of the real escrow officer. 1838

CAMPO (CNS) - At least one person was fatally injured in a two-vehicle crash Friday evening on Route 94 in Campo, according to the California Highway Patrol.The crash took place on Route 94 -- Campo Road -- at the intersection with Sheridan Road about 7 p.m., the CHP reported.The person's name was withheld pending family notification. There's no word yet on the gender or age of the victim. No information on other injuries was immediately available.At least one dog was also injured in the crash, the CHP said. Three others were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries.Campo Road was temporarily closed at 9:55 p.m. for the crash and death investigation. The roadway was reopened about 11:05 p.m., the CHP said.Campo is a small town in the southeastern portion of San Diego County. 799

CANTON, Ohio -- An Ohio police department is investigating three separate homicides that happened within 24 hours, including the death of a 1-year-old twin boy who was shot and killed while sleeping.Police in Canton, which is about 60 miles south of Cleveland, say the first homicide happened on Tuesday at around 8:25 p.m. in the 1400 block of Louisiana Court Northwest. A 31-year-old man, identified as Ronald Pleasant, was shot and killed at the scene. A 21-year-old man was shot and taken to a nearby hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening.The second homicide happened in the 100 block of Pulley Place SE at around 10:43 p.m. A 20-year-old man, identified as Brandon Bush, and another 20-year-old man, were both shot. Both were transported to local hospitals by the Canton Fire Department. Bush died from his injuries.The third homicide happened at around 2:28 a.m. Wednesday in the 1600 block of Clarendon Avenue SW. One-year-old twin brothers were shot while sleeping inside a home on Clarendon Avenue. Both were transported by the Canton Fire Department to local hospitals where one of the brothers, identified as Ace Lucas, died.
