It's a message she says is especially important in the black community, where the prevalence of heart attacks, stroke and high blood pressure are higher than normal."We have to change our lifestyle," she says. "There is a better way to live, because the numbers aren't changing unless we change."Dority was one of the first people to join LiveWell San Diego in their Love Your Heart campaign, which offers free blood pressure screenings at hundreds of locations across the county. Military base commuters can choose their carpool companion by searching through profiles to find travelers who live near them and work on base. Those who want to drive can use the app to offer rides and receive $.54 per mile for gas.“The San Diego region is home to one of the largest military populations in the nation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego gun owners could soon face more requirements when it comes to storing their firearms.City Attorney Mara Elliott announced the proposal Tuesday. It would require gun owners to store their guns in a Department of Justice approved lockbox or trigger lock, unless the owner or authorized user is carrying the firearm or it is in their immediate control. Elliott said state law requires locks to accompany guns sold in California but does not always require their use. "Safe storage laws work when it comes to protecting our kids," said Elliott, who made the announcement next to a playground at Mission Bay. Elliott pointed to the 2013 death of 10-year-old Eric Klyaz, who was fatally shot when playing with a gun in a friend's garage. "Two families were torn apart that day, but the impact of his death cut deeper than that," Elliott said. Violators would face up to six months in jail and a ,000 fine. Elliott said police wouldn't be doing door-to-door checks, but could cite someone when responding to a different call.Still, Michael Schwartz, who heads the San Diego County Gun Owners PAC, said law is duplicative and that education is the better approach. But in a recent tournament, Shane Hansen put sportsmanship above being number one. After four matches, Hansen made it to the finals in the La Costa Canyon tournament. However, the final match was getting away from him. "It was the third period, the last period, I was down 12-3, I believe, we went out of bounds, and he ended up dislocating his shoulder," said Hansen. "I felt pretty bad because obviously, he was winning that match, and it wasn't my match to win."Hansen tried to forfeit himself from the match but was not allowed. "When he came up to me and was like, I want to trade my medal, I want to trade my medal, I was just kind of taken aback that in the moment, so quickly, he was wanting to do that," said Hansen's coach, Dustin Long. During the award ceremony, Hansen gave his gold medal to his opponent in exchange for the silver medal.
