SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A family of five was displaced after a fire erupted in their City Heights kitchen Tuesday.The fire began in the kitchen of a home in the 3700 block of 41st St. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue Capt. Juan Flores, the fire appeared to begin accidentally in the cooking area as food was being prepared.Six units responded, keeping the fire isolated to the kitchen of the residence, Flores added.The family, two adults and three children, were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is currently helping them.No other units on the property were damaged. 576

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Barrio Logan business is on a mission to help students become the first in their family to go to college. Called the Barrio Logan College Institute, the business helps kids learn how to get into college. The program began in 1996 and helps students from third grade all the way through college. So far, 204 students have participated in the program. The programs offered are free, but parents are required to donate their time. The business began out of the need to help students in underserved communities. According to the institute, only three percent of adults age 25 and older in Barrio Logan have a bachelor’s degree. The institute also says only 38 percent of those 25 and older in the community have a high school diploma. Through the institute, many students have been able to go on to attend college. 88 percent of students who have gone through the Barrio Logan College Institute’s College Success Program remain in college working toward a degree. For now, the institute is focused on moving to a new location within the Barrio Logan Community, so far raising .1 million of the needed .5 million to buy the building. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A father whose infant daughter was found dead outside a Los Angeles-area mortuary surrendered Monday at the U.S.-Mexico border. Alexander Echevarria, 22, of Sacramento, turned himself in to authorities at the San Ysidro Port of Entry with his attorney by his side. Echevarria was considered a person of interest in the death of 8-month-old Alexia Rose. The baby’s body was found near a trash container outside a funeral home in Bellflower last week. The infant was partially covered by a blanket and left in a car seat. Police believe the girl died in Sacramento. Her death was not due to natural causes, the Sacramento County Sheriff said Monday. Family members had reported Echeverria missing on Memorial Day. They said he suffers from depression and had made suicidal statements. Echevarria, who also had an arrest warrant on domestic violence-related charges, is being held in San Diego pending transfer to Sacramento.Associated Press contributed to this report. 993

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  It was a normal Thursday night for Rob Perelman. His Uber app was on and he was picking up passengers in San Diego. Then suddenly, things changed and his passengers got violent. You may have seen the video by now - a car crashing in Banker's Hill after the passengers began violently beating the driver.RELATED: Uber driver attacked by drunk passengersFriday, Perelman spoke for the first time about his early-morning attack. He told 10News what happened Friday morning isn't an Uber problem - they were just bad apples. "I've done 4,999 rides with good people," Perelman said. "And one with a bad person."Perelman gave that bad ride sometime after 1:00 a.m. Friday. He picked up the passengers in Banker's Hill and almost immediately realized they were drunk. "My gut feeling said to drive away," he said. "But I'm here to give people rides home, and I said you know what, 'we've all been the drunk guy just trying to get home from the bar, let me give these guys a ride home.'"MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodHe only made it two blocks. "The guy in the back seat starts puking out the window...and if he can't make it two blocks, he's definitely not going to make it 10 minutes," Perelman said. So he pulled over and asked the two to get out of his car. He told 10News that he even tried opening the door for one of them."Still nothing happening, so I say a third time, 'get out of the vehicle or I'm calling 911,'" Perelman said. That's when things got dangerous, and the passenger next to him attacked with a fury of punches."And he's not stopping, he's just beyond the point now," Perelman said. "Probably doesn't know what he's doing, just starts throwing punches at my head, I can't get him to stop. I've got my glasses on, he knocks my glasses off."Perelman says he was left with two options. Take the beating or jump out of the car. He took option two, jumping out of the car while it was still in drive and running to a nearby house to call the police.After the car crashed, the passengers seemed to have a moment of clarity and took off. Perelman says he left behind a shoe, a cell phone and ,000 dollars in damages to his car.Even though he had a bad experience, Perelman says he just wants to get back on the road. "I'm just happy that I was able to get out safely and I've got a few bruises on my head, but I was able to walk away, so I'm lucky that it didn't escalate," Perelman said. "I don't know if he has a gun or knife, I just said let me get out of the car I don't care about the vehicle right now."Since Uber knows who the men are, the plan now is to find them and press charges.10News reached out to Uber about the attack. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A family’s trip to the pumpkin patch goes sour when thieves went picking through their car while they were picking out their pumpkins.Fay Feltman, her daughter, her granddaughter and great grandson went to the pumpkin patch located off Mission Gorge in Grantville.Because of how busy the lot was, they struggled to find an open space. Once inside, the granddaughter got a call from her dad asking about a recent Walmart charge of 00.RELATED: Intruder raids Del Cerro bedroom while woman sleepsFeltman still frustrated Tuesday, “Who would think this would happen at a pumpkin patch”. She tells 10 News her daughter ran to the car to find the window smashed and the purse stolen right from the trunk of the car.Feltman says her and her family were only in the patch for about 30 minutes. In that amount of time the thieves broke in, stole the purse and made it to Walmart off Murphy Canyon Road to make the purchase.Before heading into the pumpkin patch, Feltman says they took an extra step to put their purses in the trunk, making sure to not leave them in the back seat and visible.RELATED: Family alerted to burglars roaming tented condoUnfortunately the thieves still smashed the driver’s window to access the trunk latch but only grabbed her daughter’s purse and leaving Feltman’s.Feltman’s daughter has spent the past few days on the phone with the bank trying to cancel cards and reorder new ones.She also was at the DMV all day Monday and purchasing a new phone Tuesday. “Who would dream of people who are so evil and so cruel and so black hearted to do something like this I’m just in shock”.Now, the family left dealing with a complete invasion of privacy and sense of security, ”It’s like you’re violated even though they didn’t take any thing of mine personally they were in my car, reaching into my car just that alone makes you feel dirty, its just an icky feeling” Feltman tells us. 1937
