BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- China's weather forecast authorities on Sunday said the heat that had been bearing down on many parts of the country would continue for a few more days.Sweltering weather, with temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius, could be expected in at least 13 provinces and regions across China, the National Meteorological Center said.In Beijing, the local meteorological bureau upgraded the heat alert on Sunday from blue to yellow, two steps below the top alert. BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) - The first Chinese language study program for foreign diplomats concluded on Saturday at Hanban, the executive body of the Chinese Language Council International.The program, which started on February 27 with a two-hour class every Saturday, had attracted 31 diplomats from 16 countries to China. The countries included Slovenia, Benin, Poland, Cameroon, Kenya, Nepal, Namibia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Mexico, Afghanistan, and the Philippines."We have a lot to do in China and that makes us feel that it is necessary to learn Chinese. Not only have we learnt the Chinese language, we have also made friends with the dedicated teachers and volunteer students," said Tadeusz Chomicki, Polish Ambassador to China.During the 17-weeks of classes, the foreign diplomats learned how to greet others, shop and ask time in Chinese. They also had classes on Chinese culture, experienced the Peking opera, paper cutting, Chinese calligraphy, and shadow boxing."They were always keeping a very high spirit to learn in all weather," said Xu Lin, director-general of Hanban. "Their enthusiasm towards the Chinese language has moved us a lot," she added.Xu said Hanban had developed diversified methods such as open online classes and after-class online consulting, to help them learn Chinese better.To meet the demand of more foreign diplomats to learn Chinese, Hanban will launch the next Chinese language program in September, Xu said.

PARIS, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Legislative bodies of China and France launched their regular parliamentary exchange mechanism on Thursday, vowing to further push forward the Sino-French comprehensive strategic partnership.Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), and Bernard Accoyer, speaker of the French National Assembly, jointly declared the beginning of the first meeting of Sino-French Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.Wu said the launch of the high-level meeting between the two legislative bodies signals the Sino-French parliamentary exchanges were promoted to a new stage.Accoyer said the regular parliamentary exchange mechanism could serve as an important platform for both nations to exchange views on mutual concerns and promote bilateral cooperation in politics, technology, new energy and environmental protection.Ahead of the meeting, Wu and Accoyer held talks on bilateral ties and parliamentary cooperation.Accoyer said France attached great importance to Wu's visit as Wu is the first Chinese top legislator that visited France in 13 years.France regards China as a strategic partner, expecting to expand all-round strategic cooperation with China, boost coordination on international issues, through joint efforts against global financial crisis, climate change and other challenges, he said.Wu said his ongoing visit to France is aimed to build a closer relation between the Chinese NPC and the French National Assembly. PARIS, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Police in China and France have dismantled a network that tried to smuggle Chinese migrants into Italy and Spain on boats, officials said Thursday.The French Immigration Ministry said several members of the network headed by a Chinese national living in Paris and a number of illegal immigrants were arrested July 27 during simultaneous operations in France and China. The ministry did not detail the number of arrests.Investigations showed that each illegal migrant paid between 12,000 (15,852 U.S. dollars) and 15,000 euros (18,915 U.S. dollars) to book a ticket to Europe.France hailed police efforts and called for stronger cooperation ties with China to crack down on human trafficking."I congratulated the teams ... for dismantling an important network of illegal immigration from China, to Italy, Spain and Luxembourg, whose principal organizers were based in Paris and Shanghai," said Eric Besson, the French Minister of Immigration, Integration, National Identity and Solidarity Development.
TAIYUAN, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Eight of nine miners trapped underground Wednesday at a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province were confirmed alive, while another remains uncontactable, said local mine safety authorities.As of 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, eight miners trapped 1,380 meters below ground had contacted the rescuers and they would be rescued soon.The accident happened around 5 p.m. at Shengping Coal Mine in Jixian County when 23 miners were performing repair work underground. Fourteen miners managed to escape.The Shengping Coal Mine, owned by the Shanxi Coal Transportation and Sales Group Co., Ltd., has an annual capacity of 900,000 tonnes of coal.
