A Sacramento police officer has died after being shot while on duty and helping a woman retrieve her belongings from a home, according to Sacramento Police."We are devastated tonight," Deputy Chief Dave Peletta said at a press conference early Thursday morning. "There are no words to convey the depth of sadness we feel or how heartbroken we are for the family of our young, brave officer."Police were called on Wednesday about a disturbance between a man and a woman, according to Sacramento Police Sgt. A measure of hiring by U.S. companies has fallen to a seven-year low and fewer employers are raising pay, a business survey has found.Just one-fifth of the economists surveyed by the National Association for Business Economics said their companies have hired additional workers in the past three months. That is down from one-third in July. Job totals were unchanged at 69% of companies, up from 57% in July. A broad measure of job gains in the survey fell to its lowest level since October 2012.The hiring slowdown comes as more businesses are reporting slower growth of sales and profits. Business economists also expect the economy’s growth to slow in the coming year, partly because tariffs have raised prices and cut into sales for many firms.“The U.S. economy appears to be slowing, and respondents expect still slower growth over the next 12 months,” said Constance Hunter, NABE president and chief economist at the accounting firm KPMG.Perhaps because of concerns over a weakening economy, businesses are less likely to offer higher pay, even with unemployment at a 50-year low. Just one-third of economists said their firms had lifted pay in the past three months, down from more than half a year ago.Companies are also cutting back on their investments in machinery, computers, and other equipment. The proportion of firms increasing their spending on such goods is at its lowest level in five years, the survey found.Sales are also growing more slowly. Just 39% of economists said they rose in the past three months, down from 61% a year earlier. And only 38% said they expect sales to rise in the next three months, also down from 61% a year ago.Many business economists blamed President Trump’s tariffs on steel, aluminum, and on most imports from China for worsening business conditions. Thirty-five percent said the duties have hurt their companies, while just 7% said they had a positive effect.Of those who said tariffs had impacted their companies, 19% said they had lowered their sales and 30% said the duties pushed up costs.That has cut into profits for many firms. A strong earthquake has struck the west coast of Indonesia Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey.The USGS said the 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck just after 8 a.m. ET. It said the epicenter was in the Sunda Strait, 65 miles from the city of Tugu Hilir in the province of Banten, on the island of Java.The shaking was felt in Indonesia's capital city of Jakarta, 240 miles from the epicenter, prompting people to run out of their homes. The earthquake lasted around 40 seconds.The Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency issued a small tsunami warning for four areas following the earthquake.The agency lifted the alert just after 10 a.m. ET after there was no change in the sea water level.The quake also caused some blackouts, plunging some of the affected areas into darkness.The Indonesian National Board for Disaster said it was working with local authorities to evacuate people living on the coastline. The board told people in the affected areas to evacuate to higher places.According to USGS data and the Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System, there was no tsunami threat to other countries along the Indian Ocean. 1174

A mother and son have taken to social media in a fight against hate.Rose Gandarilla and her son, Ruben, started the #ElPasoChallenge on Twitter with a simple idea in mind: spread kindness during a time of hate and violence.Gandarilla, a school administrator, wrote on Twitter that her son came to her with an idea. He wanted to challenge all El Paso residents to do 22 random acts of kindness — one action for every person killed in the El Paso mass shooting that happened Saturday.The tweet has started gathering attention since it was posted Sunday night.Commenters were elated with the idea and remarked how wonderful her son must be, with one person saying, "Way to go kiddo! A possible government plan to send migrants who are in federal custody to South Florida sparked concern from local officials this week, and one mayor offered a proposal of his own."Bring them to the Trump hotels and ask the President to open his heart and home as well," Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen said.Bogen said in a statement that he and other local officials learned this week from US Customs and Border Protection of a plan to release hundreds of migrants weekly into the area."This is a humanitarian crisis.
