A Sacramento police officer has died after being shot while on duty and helping a woman retrieve her belongings from a home, according to Sacramento Police."We are devastated tonight," Deputy Chief Dave Peletta said at a press conference early Thursday morning. "There are no words to convey the depth of sadness we feel or how heartbroken we are for the family of our young, brave officer."Police were called on Wednesday about a disturbance between a man and a woman, according to Sacramento Police Sgt. Vance Chandler. They met the woman involved at another location and went back to the home with her to gather some of her things, Chandler said. While officers were at the scene, officer Tara O'Sullivan was shot, according to Peletta. The suspect, armed with a rifle, continued shooting, and the other officers on the scene had to take cover.Sacramento police brought in an armored vehicle to rescue O'Sullivan, who was taken to a hospital where she died, Chandler said. The woman who had been involved in the earlier disturbance was able to get out safe, according to CNN affiliate 1097

A measure of hiring by U.S. companies has fallen to a seven-year low and fewer employers are raising pay, a business survey has found.Just one-fifth of the economists surveyed by the National Association for Business Economics said their companies have hired additional workers in the past three months. That is down from one-third in July. Job totals were unchanged at 69% of companies, up from 57% in July. A broad measure of job gains in the survey fell to its lowest level since October 2012.The hiring slowdown comes as more businesses are reporting slower growth of sales and profits. Business economists also expect the economy’s growth to slow in the coming year, partly because tariffs have raised prices and cut into sales for many firms.“The U.S. economy appears to be slowing, and respondents expect still slower growth over the next 12 months,” said Constance Hunter, NABE president and chief economist at the accounting firm KPMG.Perhaps because of concerns over a weakening economy, businesses are less likely to offer higher pay, even with unemployment at a 50-year low. Just one-third of economists said their firms had lifted pay in the past three months, down from more than half a year ago.Companies are also cutting back on their investments in machinery, computers, and other equipment. The proportion of firms increasing their spending on such goods is at its lowest level in five years, the survey found.Sales are also growing more slowly. Just 39% of economists said they rose in the past three months, down from 61% a year earlier. And only 38% said they expect sales to rise in the next three months, also down from 61% a year ago. Many business economists blamed President Trump’s tariffs on steel, aluminum, and on most imports from China for worsening business conditions. Thirty-five percent said the duties have hurt their companies, while just 7% said they had a positive effect.Of those who said tariffs had impacted their companies, 19% said they had lowered their sales and 30% said the duties pushed up costs. That has cut into profits for many firms. Just 19% of economists said their companies’ profit margins have risen in the past three months, barely half the 37% who reported greater profits a year earlier.Two-thirds of the economists surveyed now forecast that the economy will grow just 1.1% to 2% from the third quarter of 2019 through the third quarter of 2020. A year ago, they were more bullish: Nearly three-quarters forecast growth of 2.1% to 3% from the third quarter of 2018 through the third quarter of 2019.The NABE surveyed 101 economists at companies and trade associations from Sept. 26 through Oct. 14. 2672

A strong earthquake has struck the west coast of Indonesia Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The USGS said the 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck just after 8 a.m. ET. It said the epicenter was in the Sunda Strait, 65 miles from the city of Tugu Hilir in the province of Banten, on the island of Java. The shaking was felt in Indonesia's capital city of Jakarta, 240 miles from the epicenter, prompting people to run out of their homes. The earthquake lasted around 40 seconds. The Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency issued a small tsunami warning for four areas following the earthquake. The agency lifted the alert just after 10 a.m. ET after there was no change in the sea water level. The quake also caused some blackouts, plunging some of the affected areas into darkness. The Indonesian National Board for Disaster said it was working with local authorities to evacuate people living on the coastline. The board told people in the affected areas to evacuate to higher places.According to USGS data and the Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System, there was no tsunami threat to other countries along the Indian Ocean. 1174

A mother and son have taken to social media in a fight against hate.Rose Gandarilla and her son, Ruben, started the #ElPasoChallenge on Twitter with a simple idea in mind: spread kindness during a time of hate and violence.Gandarilla, a school administrator, wrote on Twitter that her son came to her with an idea. He wanted to challenge all El Paso residents to do 22 random acts of kindness — one action for every person killed in the El Paso mass shooting that happened Saturday. The tweet has started gathering attention since it was posted Sunday night.Commenters were elated with the idea and remarked how wonderful her son must be, with one person saying, "Way to go kiddo! There is HOPE for the future and it starts with you!" and another said, "This will remain with me all day.......what kindness." 819

A possible government plan to send migrants who are in federal custody to South Florida sparked concern from local officials this week, and one mayor offered a proposal of his own."Bring them to the Trump hotels and ask the President to open his heart and home as well," Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen said.Bogen said in a statement that he and other local officials learned this week from US Customs and Border Protection of a plan to release hundreds of migrants weekly into the area."This is a humanitarian crisis. We will do everything possible to help these people," Bogen said. "If the President will not provide us with financial assistance to house and feed these people, he will be creating a homeless encampment."Neighboring Palm Beach County -- home to Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort -- also received a similar notification from CBP, officials there said. The sheriff said the agency had recently informed the county of a plan to transport 135 migrants from El Paso, Texas, to Broward and Palm Beach counties twice a week."The President wants to send his problems to Palm Beach County. And that's not fair," Palm Beach County Mayor Mack Bernard told CNN on Friday.CBP: 'We are not flying anyone to Florida'On Friday, a CBP official said there were no plans to send migrants to Florida "immediately," adding that the agency has been in "preliminary" conversations with a number of localities across the country about "contingency plans" to move groups of recently apprehended immigrant families."We are not flying anyone to Florida. We were in preliminary planning stages across the nation ... for having contingency plans because we are overcapacity and for our safety and the safety of those that we are charged with caring for, we can't keep them in these facilities," the CBP official said of intake facilities along the US-Mexico border."This is an emergency of 'get them out of our facilities as quickly as we can and as safely as we can.' This is an emergency. The entire system is overwhelmed."The official said record number of family units and unaccompanied minors crossing the border has created "a serious backlog" at intake facilities and forced immigration authorities to move the migrants to other areas for processing before release.CBP last week began moving immigrants by bus and plane to other border communities along the US-Mexico border "to leverage available capacity for processing and holding," CBP said.Since May 10, CBP has been bussing families from the Rio Grande Valley to Laredo, Texas, the official said, as well as flying migrants on planes contracted from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to Del Rio, Texas, and San Diego.Everyone that is being moved by bus or plane is part of a family unit, and has been initially processed for criminal connections, and given a medical assessment to make sure they are medically cleared to fly, according to the official. The CBP official said authorities were looking at locations across the country where CBP has temporary detention facilities and adequate computer systems to be able to process the immigrants upon arrival. Those locations are primarily along the northern and coastal border, the official said. The official denied that the contingency plans being laid were targeting sanctuary cities, which would be in line with President Trump's stated intention of sending immigrants to sanctuary cities."All we are looking at right now is where we have the capacity and the bandwidth for the computer systems, and the computer systems to be able to do the processing," the official said.Lawmakers trade blameSeveral lawmakers who represent Florida in Congress said details were in short supply -- though they traded blame over who was responsible for the situation.Republican Sen. Marco Rubio said he'd sent a list of questions over the matter to Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan.Republican Sen. Rick Scott's office said Democrats were to blame for refusing to fix a crisis at the border, adding that Scott is seeking additional information from local sheriffs, the White House and the Department of Homeland Security.Democratic Rep. Ted Deutch slammed what he said was a "stunning amount of confusion" over the administration's immigration policy."Our diverse community treats immigrants with dignity and respect; the Administration should do the same," he said in a statement. "That starts with a thoughtful plan rather than a rash decision apparently made by some in the Administration without any consultation with the rest of the government."Earlier this month, 4582
