SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This year's San Diego Pride festivities are going virtual, to comply with the Stay-at-home order brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. While hundreds of thousands of people tuned into the program online, others could not resist heading to Hillcrest for the annual celebration. No cars needed to be towed, and no streets needed to be blocked off Saturday. This year's San Diego Pride parade launched virtually in a quiet outdoor patio at Inside-Out restaurant in Hillcrest."Today's going to look a little different, but we're going to keep it as close to normal as possible," San Diego Pride Executive Director, Fernando Lopez, said.Organizers hoped to keep it "normal," despite trying times brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. But Pride is no stranger to the idea of "adapt and overcome.""Our parade has gone through a hurricane, our parade has gone through a bomb threat," San Diego Pride Philanthropy Director, Sarafina Scapicchio said. "We have had challenges to this event happening, and it is very important to keep our Pride traditions alive regardless of what's going on to the community."People who would normally be marching in Hillcrest submitted videos and logged on for live interviews. Others still made their way to University Avenue, to support local LGBTQ businesses and display their pride."Pride is feeling your true self and celebrating with your community," Lorraine Neville said while dining outdoors at Gossip Grill."It means one love," Cindy Lauritzen said, also at the restaurant.Cindy and Janine Lauritzen never miss a Pride. They say they want their love story to inspire the next generation."There was a day when we couldn't be married," Janine Lauritzen said. "Now we are and celebrating that, and getting the younger generations to see that it's OK to be who they are."They were one of the more than 160,000 people who tuned into the virtual parade from around the world.Organizers admit it was not perfect. Periodically, they faced a few digital and audio hiccups. But they say they are proud to spread this year's timely slogan."'Together We Rise,' is our message to everyone," Scapicchio said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees on Thursday responded to a scathing audit that alleged evidence of fraud or misappropriation of funds leading to a multi-million dollar deficit.In their response to the audit, the district’s Board of Trustees acknowledged the importance of an independent state agency’s audit and said they “intend to cooperate fully with these agencies should they require additional information.”“We acknowledge that, as required, you notified the local district attorney, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and State Controller that the FCMAT AB 139 report found there is sufficient evidence to demonstrate that fraud, misappropriation of funds, or other illegal fiscal activities may have occurred," the Board of Trustees said."We understand the importance of having these agencies review the report and intend to cooperate fully with these agencies should they require additional information," said the board.The 79-page audit, conducted by the independent state agency Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT), was made public June 22. According to the report, the district’s school board relied on inaccurate financial information when they approved salary increases for district employees, resulting in pay raises they could not afford.The audit also reportedly found the district kept borrowing from capital projects in the South Bay, such as Mello-Roos funds, to pay for operations without a method of repaying that money back into the fund.The board said that individuals and outside entities identified by FCMAT as having enough evidence to suggest they were engaged in illegal acts are "either no longer employed by the District or are removed from all involvement in the District’s current operations."RELATED: SUHSD: 90 bus drivers paid over 0K in overtime during 2017, database saysThe board also said that since the audit, they’ve taken other actions based on recommendations from the FCMAT, including:The district will be implementing the INFOR financial module in the 12 to 18 months. The new system replaces the one the FMCAT said said led to accounting errors and will interface with the County Office of Education for monitoring.The District will provide Board and leadership training to enhance awareness of fraud, including detection and prevention. An anonymous hotline for reporting fraud will continue to be available internally and to the public.The District staff will ensure that the Board and County receive updates on the progress to address the recommendations set forth in this report.“As a Board and as acting superintendent, we are committed to ensuring we implement and improve our systems and supports to best serve our community and understand that this process starts with the superintendent and the Board,” said the board.The response was signed by current trustees Nicholas Segura, Board Vice President; Arturo Solis, Board Member; Paula Hall, Board Member; Kevin J. The board also voted 4-1 to place its beleaguered superintendent Dr. Karen Janney on paid administrative leave.Janney had been under public pressure to step down following a multi-million dollar budget shortfall in 2018 which prompted an investigation. Since then, the district's budget crisis spiraled into teachers and programs being cut, bus routes eliminated, and increased class sizes. The board previously said its action against Janney is not disciplinary but it is to support and ensure an efficient investigation of the concerns raised in the FCMAT audit.With the release of the FCMAT audit, it will be up to the District Attorney, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and State Controller to determine if fraud did in fact occur within the Sweetwater District.The San Diego County District Attorney's office said they are reviewing the audit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego International Airport expects an increase in travelers during the upcoming holiday season, even as cases of coronavirus surge in San Diego."We have seen an increase (in the past)," says Airport Spokesperson Nicole Hall. "So we are planning for that. We have additional flights leaving San Diego and anticipate an increase in the travel during that time."When the pandemic started, passenger travel at the San Diego International Airport dropped more than 90%. It has since recovered a bit. Airport officials say they're now down 67% from last year.With more people expected to fly over the holidays, the airport has increased it's efforts to make sure everyone who passes through it stays safe.They are requiring masks for every person in the airport. Signs shaped like surfboards help mark 6-foot social distancing requirements on the floor. Seats are marked as "off-limits." Plexiglass dividers line ticket counters and concession areas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This isn't the first time the idea of an aerial tram in San Diego has been floated around. But it is the first time the idea of one from the airport has been raised.A feasibility study, completed by engineering firm WSP USA, proposed a "skyway" to connect San Diego International Airport to the convention center could be built with current aerial cableway technology.The study suggests the aerial cableway "has the potential to enhance mobility within the study area." The transit system could include intermediate stations at Santa Fe Depot, Seaport Village, the Embarcadero, and in the Marina District.Riders would also be able to connect to MTS, Coaster, and Amtrak stations, the study says.The skyway would cost about 0 million to 0 million to construct and about million to million to operate every year, the study says.The study adds the skyway could make 1.1 million and 1.6 million trips a year, or about 3,600 to 4,900 trips a day. An aerial cableway could transport about 2,400 people per hour per direction, with cabins holding eight to 12 people, according to the study.In the study, the skyway begins at the Gaslamp Quarter trolley station near Harbor Dr. and 5th Ave., and roughly follow Harbor Dr., Kettner Blvd., Broadway, and Harbor Dr. again to the airport, ultimately ending at passenger terminals. IS IT POSSIBLE?While the study determined a skyway is feasible, it did not say whether it would be the best method for mobility to alleviate traffic between the airport and downtown.A system of this kind would also be a first in the U.S. New York and Oregon are both home to point-to-point aerial cableways: the Portland Aerial Tram and Roosevelt Island Tram. But a system with intermediate stops hasn't been implemented in the U.S.Large aerial systems already exist in South America, Europe, and Asia. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three cars were totaled after a semi crashed into a hydrant in the Midway District, sending water spewing into the air. The crash happened on the 2300 block of Sports Arena Boulevard around 1:45 p.m.Water could be seen shooting into the air and flooding the nearby street. It wasn't immediately clear what led to the crash. According to authorities, the water gushing out of the hydrant also picked up rocks, sending them shooting through windshields of nearby cars and flooding them with water.  544
