The housing market halted at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States, but now that sector of the economy is seeing the strongest recovery.“Housing economist have been optimistically surprised by the return of buyers to the market,” said Zillow Economist Skylar Olsen. “The overall availability of inventory is more constrained now than it was last year and that is putting upward pressure on prices, meaning that prices are stable.”Over the last few weeks, realtors like Michelle Pfeffer in New York City have noticed not only a strong market, but a new trend with the most competitive sales being homes located in the suburbs.“A lot of properties that are coming on the market are having showings within a couple of days and a lot of multiple offer situations,” Pfeffer said about homes in the suburbs. “We are definitely seeing more people moving out of the city.”Lingering uncertainty around the pandemic, and a possible second round of closures and self-quarantines have motivated many of these moves.“We are getting people who have been in quarantine for a couple of months now in small quarters and maybe have decided that it is more of a priority to have a yard and space,” Pfeffer added. “Also, because we have had a big technological shift, companies that weren’t offering remote work options previously were sort of forced into it and found that it was effective. Which means that they don’t have to be in the office every day and it gives them the opportunity to live in further distances.”According to research by Zillow, New York City, Miami, and San Jose are so far one of three cities seeing the trend of a substantially higher number of people moving out of the city and to the suburbs.Economist at Zillow are monitoring sales and home searches to see if this is a trend that will spread to other major cities or not, in addition to other possible trends the pandemic may cause in the housing market.“This experience can bring a lot of changes to housing, but it is a little bit too early to see how we’ll actuate that out and you can imagine a lot of different ways that can play out,” said Olsen. 2141
The House Committee on Labor and Education is holding a hearing on the topic of reopening schools amid the coronavirus pandemic on Thursday — about a week after Democrats on the committee said the White House blocked health officials from testifying during the hearing.Last Friday, CNN and Politico reported that Democrats' request to have CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield testify at the hearing was denied by the White House."Dr. Redfield has testified on the Hill at least four times over the last three months. We need our doctors focused on the pandemic response," an email from the White House to committee members read, according to CNN.Democrats claim that their request was for any high-ranking CDC official, not just Redfield.No Trump administration officials are testifying at Thursday's hearing. The National Weather Service is projecting Southern Arizona's fire season to be more active than normal."There's leftover dry fuels from last year, and there's newly formed fine fuels," Warning Coordination Meteorologist Ken Drozd said.Above average daytime high temperatures, combined with storm systems bringing wind but no rain, and very dry conditions, are some of the reasons why the NWS projects May and June to have the more fire activity than normal.Due to a wet February, there is now more dry fuel in the region, according to Drozd. Sometimes, significant rain events leading into fire season can delay or shorten it, but that wasn't the case this year."Those new grasses that greened up from that precipitation event have now dried out again, due to the warm temperatures we've experienced lately," Drozd said."The hotter you get, the more you're going to dry things out. It just keeps things dried out unless you get some intermediate rain that'll come in, and again, there's none in the forecast right now."Last year, fires ripped through Southern Arizona from April to July, blackening landscapes and destroying homes in their paths. The Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, was expected to bring thousands to the small South Dakota town despite the spread of the coronavirus. The Sturgis Police department reported a total of 92 non-traffic arrests, 60 traffic arrests and 24 parking citations through Monday morning. The rally is three days into its nine-day run.While 92 non-traffic arrests were up by 22 from this time last year, traffic-related arrests were down by 19 from a year ago.The department released a breakdown of the arrests from the rally.
