CNN and the New York Times both reported on Friday that Vice President Mike Pence’s several members of the Secret Service’s team tested positive for the virus during his recent trip to Arizona.CNN reported that eight members of Pence’s team had positive COVID-19 tests. Meanwhile, the New York Times reported that two members of Pence’s Secret Service travel team tested positive.The Secret Service has not confirmed the reports.Pence had planned an event in Yuma, Arizona, on Tuesday. Instead, Pence made a brief visit to Phoenix on Wednesday to meet with public health officials.CNN reported that the eight members of Pence’s team remained holed up in Arizona as of Friday evening, citing two sources.The reports come as both Pence and President Donald Trump have ramped up their public schedules, holding rallies and public events. Councilmember Georgette Gomez is calling for the San Diego City Council to officially oppose construction of President Trump's "Border Wall." But, she says her opposition has nothing to do with her feelings about the President, or about the need for immigration reform.Gomez told 10News she thinks a wall would hurt San Diego's economy and environment."As leaders of the 8th largest city in the nation, to be silent on the wall is a disgrace," she says.Gomez will host a protest and rally in front of City Hall Tuesday, to bring community advocates together. It starts at 1 pm in the Civic Center Plaza.After that, she will ask the full City Council to vote on a resolution opposing the wall."It's important for the city of San Diego to stand up and protect our back yard," she says. "We need to tell Washington DC that this is not what we want or believe."Gomez says money spent on the wall would be better served to improve infrastructure to make crossing easier, improving the flow of traffic and helping San Diego become an even bigger hub for international commerce. That, she says, could add billions to the local economy."We already see it with the Cross Border Express," she says, referring to the pedestrian bridge built to the Tijuana airport. It lets travelers get across the border without having to go through the San Ysidro Point of Entry.In addition, she says the construction to widen and stream-line the Port of Entry is a good start, but more needs to be done."We should be investing in our infrastructure, but creating a wall does the opposite of what we're trying to achieve," says Gomez.In addition, she thinks construction on the wall could hurt the environment around the Tijuana River."Right now, if you want to go to the border, you can't drive down there. You have to park your car and walk," she says. "But if they build a wall, you need heavy equipment. So that's going to be brought in by vehicles and heavy machinery. They'll have to drive through sensitive habitat."Gomez says recent construction on the fence that currently exists was given a waiver so it didn't need an envioronmental impact review. She fears the same things could happen again."Regardless of how I feel about the wall, every project should have an EIR done so we know what to expect and what we can prevent," she says.Gomez says members of the Sierra Club, the Human Resources Commission and the American Friends Service Committee will be at her rally Tuesday. 2469

Communities are still rebuilding after a Category 4 Hurricane Laura hit Louisiana in August.“I feel like I was coming to a third-world country when we came back," described Pam Abshire when she returned to southeast Louisiana home following the storm.As she assessed the damage to her home, Abshire began picking up shards of glass from the windows that were blown out by the hurricane.Abshire is an elementary school art teacher. She says she plans to use the glass for a project at school."They’ll have something to remember and they can hang on to," she said.The year 2020 has proven that Mother Nature knows how to challenge those who live in places like the Gulf Coast.In October, Hurricane Delta brought flooding, wind, and more pain to those who are still trying to clean up after Hurricane Laura less than two months ago.Dr. Tyson Green's home was destroyed by Laura and he doesn't know where his family of six will call home next. His family evacuated ahead of the storm, but he stayed behind to care for his patients. Now, he's raising thousands of dollars for frontline medical workers who lost everything in the storms.Other businesses, who were already struggling through the pandemic, are trying to stay afloat.As a man with a guitar plays upbeat music outside Jason Machulski's downtown Lake Charles market, business is giving him a positive outlook.Like many business owners this year, the pandemic has been a fight.“We provided toilet paper, essentials, meat, bread, cleaning supplies, but it hit us financially pretty bad," Machulski recalled.Hurricane Laura knocked his power out for a month. His lights are now back on, but for many others, they’ll stay dark.“A lot of businesses that are local staples are just gone," he said.The people of Lake Charles may wonder why Mother Nature chose them.“You just trust in God that he’s going to take care of things," said Abshire.For those still sifting through the rubble, rebuilding is less about why and more about what you can learn on the journey to recovery.“Picking up the pieces and going forward, and that’s what we’re going to do," Abshire said. 2124

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — An Indiana man has been charged with murder after he allegedly killed and decapitated his wife.Police arrested Michael Parks of Crawfordsville on Friday after investigators found his wife's body and severed head, according to court documents filed Monday.On Aug. 20, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office received a report of a deceased woman, identified as Hope Parks, whose headless body was found on County Road 225 on the Sugar Creek Bridge.Michael Parks told Crawfordsville police his wife had been missing since Aug. 18 following an argument. He said the last time he saw her was when she left their house and got into a silver or white Honda that was driven by an unknown person.During a search of the couple's house, police found dried blood in the gravel driveway in front of an overhead garage door, on the garage floor with a shoe print and on an exterior deck. Officers also discovered a trail of dried blood in the grass.Later in the day, investigators found a human head with a bullet wound buried in the cellar of the house.Police also found a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition, which matched a spent .22 caliber cartridge casing that was found in the yard next to a trail of blood. A phone believed to have belonged to Hope Parks was found in a safe in the home's bedroom. Investigators also found a man's shoe with tread similar to the footprint in the blood droppings in the garage.The next day, investigators discovered a blue tarp that was stained with blood, along with hair and plastic bags containing blood-covered rags that were found in the hole where the severed head was buried.An initial hearing for Michael Parks was held Tuesday.
