San Diego (KGTV)- The entertainment world is left in shock after the death of Chadwick Boseman. The Hollywood star lost his battle with colon cancer. He was just 43 years old. Local physicians are stressing the importance of getting screened.For four years, the actor fought a silent battle with this cancer. He was diagnosed in his late 30's, much younger than the age many get tested."What we have seen is in younger people, the rates of colon cancer are going up and have actually gone up every decade, and the reasons for that are not known," says Dr. Abi Olulade with Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group.Olulade says the rates of colon cancer are higher in the African American community."Not only is there an increased rate in colon cancer, but there's an increased chance of dying from this if you are African American," says Olulade.The American Cancer Society estimates 12-percent of colorectal cancer diagnosis this year will be in people under the age of 50."People have put off their screening, which is dangerous," says Dr. Walter Coyle with the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center.Coyle says due to the pandemic, fewer patients are coming in for screenings."The American Cancer Society says we should start screening people at age 45 and up now. All the other societies say 50 unless you're African American."Coyle says a healthy diet can help lower the risks of this cancer. He hopes the news of famous actor Chadwick Boseman will encourage people to get their screenings."I couldn't imagine someone that young and vigorous dying. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --The FDA has placed new restrictions on a controversial birth control device called Essure.  The maker of the implant, Bayer, will only be allowed to sell to providers who agree to fully inform women about the risks and side effects.  A San Diego woman who had the Essure implant is now suing the physician who performed the procedure.  She says she wasn't given enough information and wants to warn others about her experience.  Three months after Essure was implanted she began experiencing severe pain. She eventually had a full hysterectomy.   603

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): The San Diego Sheriff's Department has a new tool to help keep deputies safe as they fight the war on drugs.The department just bought 15 TruNarc devices. The hand-held scanners can detect and identify drugs without the deputies having to come into physical contact.Previously, to determine what kind of drug was present at a crime scene, law enforcement would have to scoop a small amount into a kit for testing. The TruNarc uses laser technology to scan through plastic bags.This technology has become increasingly important with the rise of drugs like Fentanyl. Just a microscopic amount can cause an overdose, which has made first responders wary of handling it.The TruNarc can identify more than 200 different drugs and takes less than 2 minutes to complete the scan and give a presumptive result.San Diego Sheriff's Deputies used it earlier this month when they encountered an unconscious man in San Marcos. He was covered in white powder. Deputies called for the scanner and found the powder was Fentanyl. They called for a hazmat team to clean the scene. Officials with the department say the device likely saved the man's life, as he was able to get the medical help he needed. They say it also may have saved the officers, who didn't have to touch the man or the powder until after the scene had been made safe.The devices cost ,400 each. A grant from the Honorary Deputy Sheriff's Association helped pay for them. One has been given to each sub-station around the county. There is also one at every jail and another at the High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area office. 1617
