SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — First responders were called to a downtown San Diego intersection after a San Diego Sheriff's inmate transfer van and Tesla collided Wednesday.The crash was reported at Sixth Ave. and A St. just before 3 p.m. after the Tesla reportedly side-swiped the inmate van. There were 12 inmates on the van, plus to driver and a sheriff's deputy, according to San Diego Police.The inmates were evaluated by first responders on the van, but no one was transported to the hospital, police said. 509

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Freeway improvements will force westbound Interstate 8 to close this week.The westbound portion of I-8 at State Route 163 will close Wednesday at 11 p.m. until Thursday at 5 a.m. as part of an I-8/I-5 interchange improvement project, according to Caltrans.Westbound traffic on I-8 will be detoured onto northbound and southbound SR-163. The closure will stretch roughly five miles from Mission Valley to Ocean Beach.Officials ask motorists to observe Caltrans workers in the area and drive safely. 534

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Former Congressman Duncan Hunter Sr. called his son’s opponent in the November election a threat to national security to his face on Tuesday.Hunter Sr., the father of Congressman Duncan D. Hunter, held what he called a “security briefing” on Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar across from the U.S.S Midway Museum. Campa-Najjar is running against Duncan D. Hunter for his seat in the 50th Congressional District. Congressman Hunter and his wife Margaret are currently facing 60 federal charges of wire fraud and conspiracy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- District Attorney Summer Stephan spoke about her new efforts to train officers and weed out “bad actors.”The push includes calls for a new independent Commission on Police Practices, which would replace the current Community Review Board on Police Practices. “Our communities need us to grieve with them, but they also need us as leaders to step up,” Stephan said. “Officers that are involved in abuse like what we saw with Mr. George Floyd have a history. They do not belong in a field where you supposed to serve and protect and you have the power between life and death.”She said part of the effort to train officers in de-escalating situations includes a new class that focuses on interactions with the public. “This is about interacting with someone that may have mental health issues, may appear not compliant, and how do you talk to them. How do you de-escalate? How do you show respect and communication?” she said.The goal is to train all 5,000 officers in the local departments.The independent Commission on Police Practices would have independent council and subpoena power. It still needs to qualify for the November ballot. Mayor Faulconer pledged his support for the ballot measure Monday. Stephan said she also supports it.“I support it because it is a balanced approach for oversight and transparency,” Stephan said.
