BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao sent a message to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Chilean President Sebastian Pinera on Friday to congratulate the founding of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).In his message, Hu said that the establishment of CELAC is a major milestone in regional integration and that China appreciates the positive role of Latin American and Caribbean countries in international and regional affairs.China believes that the establishment of the community will make important contributions to unity and coordination in the region as well as joint efforts to counter global challenges, Hu said.China and Latin America are geographically apart, but their peoples enjoy traditional friendship, Hu said.In the 21st century, relations between China and Latin America have seen all-round and fast development with the expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation, Hu said.China has always treated its relations with Latin America from a strategic perspective and China is willing to work with CELAC and other countries in the region to build and develop a comprehensive cooperative partnership of mutual benefit and common development through the strengthening of dialogue, communication and cooperation, said Hu.The idea of CELAC was initiated in February 2010 at a regional summit in the Mexican resort of Cancun. MOSCOW, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Space Agency Roscosmos confirmed on Monday the list of next crew members who will fly to the International Space Station (ISS) on Nov. 14.Russia's Soyuz TMA-22 spacecraft will bring Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin and American astronaut Daniel Burbank to the ISS for a 124-day-long mission.Russia's Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin and American Josef Akaba are announced as the backup crew.According to the Roscosmos, the new crew will host one manned and three unmanned cargo ships during their stay in the ISS and conduct a space walk as well as 37 scientific experiments.During the new crew's stay, the ISS would also make its 75,000th revolution around the Earth, the Roscosmos said.The launch of the Soyuz TMA-22 was initially scheduled on Sept. 22, but was postponed after the failed launch of the Progress cargo ship to the ISS on Aug. 24.

BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- China will launch its first-ever high-resolution geological mapping satellite for civil purposes next January, according to official sources.The Ziyuan III satellite will be launched aboard a Long March 4B carrier rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern China's Shanxi province, according to a conference held on Monday for the directors of surveying, mapping and geoinformation administrations across the nation.The Ziyuan III's surveying covers the entire area between 84 degrees north latitude and 84 degrees south latitude.The satellite will be used to conduct geological mapping, carry out surveys on land resources, help with natural disaster-reduction and prevention, and lend assistance to farming, water conservation, urban planning and other sectors.The Ziyuan III satellite project was inaugurated on March 2008, and also includes gravity satellites, radar satellites and follow-up satellites for the Ziyuan III, so as to obtain geoinformation under all kinds of meteorological conditions. 

ISLAMABAD, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan ranks the seventh in the world in terms of diabetes prevalence rate and over 7.1 million people in the country are diabetes patients, reported local media on Monday.Quoting a report by the World International Diabetes Federation, a local English newspaper "The News" said that every year 89,000 people die of diabetes in Pakistan and the number of diabetes patients in the country could hit 11.5 million by the year 2025 if proper measures were not taken.This would make Pakistan the world's fifth largest country in terms of its number of diabetes patients 14 years later, warned the report.At a seminar organized Monday in Islamabad to observe the World Diabetes Day which falls on Nov. 14, Dr. Abdus Salam from Shifa International Hospital, a private-run hospital in the capital city, said that every ten seconds, two people are diagnosed with diabetes and one person dies of diabetes-related causes.The average age of diabetes patients in Pakistan is one of the lowest in the world, said the report. In a bid to raise public awareness about the harmful effects of diabetes, various diabetes camps, scientific sessions, seminars and walks were organized across the country on Monday to mark the World Diabetes Day.In a message delivered on Sunday, Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said that the World Diabetes Day draws attention to the lethality of the disease and underscores the need of preventive measures at individual and collective levels."Diabetes is a killer which is taking the life of one person out of every 800," said the prime minister, adding that "this disease hits people of all age groups, rich and poor alike without any discrimination."
