WEST CHESTER TWP., Ohio — West Chester Police are investigating a racist letter one family said was mailed to them earlier in the week. The letter, laden with racial slurs and derogatory language, demands the family take down their yard signs supporting President-elect Joe Biden and the Black Lives Matter movement.Mia Harlan said when her husband Brian opened a letter from the mail late last week, his reaction told her it wasn't a typical piece of mail."The way he responded, the way he acted, told me something wasn't right," Harlan said.The Harlans have a Black Lives Matter flag and a Biden campaign sign in their yard; the letter the couple received threatens vandalism if the signs aren't taken down.It states, in part, "if you don't take that s*** down in a hurry, we'll be aiming at your house, your cars and you."Racial slurs and expletives in the letter have been censored.Harlan said she was disgusted and angry, and the couple reported the letter to West Chester Police."Stay away from my family," she said. "Stay away from my property...what else would they do? Will they actually come to our home and try to harm us? Or try to harm our children? Our grandchildren?"The Harlans said they're taking extra precautions to stay safe, but refuse to take down the signs in their yard."My message for them is, if you don't understand what you see when this sign here saying 'Black Lives Matter,' if you don't understand the message here, then this is absolutely the thing that needs to be here," Brian Harland said.Barbara Wilson, spokeswoman for West Chester Township, released the following statement on Monday:"The matter is being taken very seriously by the West Chester Police Department. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal officials say the key component to getting the COVID-19 vaccine distributed across the country will lie in the hands of states, with help from major pharmacy chains, like CVS and Walgreens.“We want to replicate what the experience you have with the flu vaccine — convenient to you, a tried-and-true system that we do hundreds of millions of vaccines through every year,” said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. “That's the backbone of the approach we're taking.”Yet, if flu vaccine rates are any indication, that backbone may not suffice.Dr. Eric Schneider is with The Commonwealth Fund, an independent organization that studies health policy. They recently delved into previous vaccination rates to see how it might unfold for COVID-19.“Our health care system does well at developing new technologies like these vaccines, which are really quite amazing, scientifically speaking,” Dr. Schneider said. “But we don't do as well at making sure those technologies are distributed to the people who need them most. And we're seeing that in the prior vaccination experience, and I’m worried we will see that with COVID-19.”What did they find?A mere 51% of Americans got the flu vaccine last year and only 38% got the H1N1 swine flu vaccine 10 years ago, which had a similar vaccine development timetable and pressure to COVID-19.Those low vaccination rates matter because in order for the COVID-19 vaccine to create herd immunity in the U.S., between 70 and 90% of all Americans will need to get vaccinated.“The concept of herd immunity really is developed out of vaccination programs because the question is ‘What proportion of the population needs to be vaccinated to prevent the circulation of a virus in the population?’” Dr. Schneider said.Just getting that shot could vary depending on where you live, as the federal government is leaving that up to each state.“That's going to be up to the nation's governors as they prioritize within their states,” HHS Secretary Azar said.However, Dr. Schneider said that in order for the states to pull it off, they are going to need federal help.“States are in incredible difficulty right now with their budgets and they need federal support,” he said. “Congress is considering a federal rescue package. WASHINGTON, D.C. — To hear artist Harvey Pratt describe the new memorial in the National Mall is to understand just how much it means to him and others.“Almost all tribes use sacred fire and water and they use the earth and air,” he said. “I thought, ‘you know, that’s what I’ll use – those elements.'”Pratt designed the newest memorial in Washington, D.C. – the National Native American Veterans Memorial. He faced an enormous task.“I thought, ‘How do you connect 573 federally-recognized tribes, plus the state-recognized tribes – without being specific to a certain tribe or region?’” he said.Nestled beside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, it is a place meant for reflection and remembrance.“Native people, tribal people, have always respected their veterans,” Pratt said. “Almost every tribe has a memorial to their veterans.”Yet, there’s never been a national one in such a prominent place until now.“We held 35 consultations across the country and met with about 1,200 people because we really wanted to get a sense of what they wanted to see in the memorial, what the experience of visiting it should be,” said The Smithsonian’s Rebecca Trautmann, who is the memorial’s curator.Congress first authorized its construction in 1994. However, money needed to be raised in order to make it happen; the construction was funded by private donations.“Native people have been serving in great numbers and with great dedication from the time of the Revolutionary War, up to the present,” Trautmann said, “and they continue to serve in in large numbers.”That includes Harvey Pratt, who is a Cheyenne-Arapaho, a Cheyenne Peace Chief and a veteran who served in Vietnam.“I just want people to know – we’re still here. Native people are still here and when Native people come to the memorial and do their ceremonies, that we’re going to educate non-Native people,” Pratt said. “They’ll see us doing things, they’ll ask questions and they’ll come to know us a little better.”The memorial is now providing a new way for others to get to know a group of American veterans, who now have a place where their sacrifice is recognized. 2154
