EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — The City of El Cajon has become a home away from home for many Chaldeans.They are a Catholic- Christian community who migrated to the U.S. from northern Iraq. El Cajon has the second largest number of Chaldean residents in the country."We as Chaldeans believe in the hope, and the resurrection, and the hope of what Jesus gives us," says Father Daniel Shaba.The church is the center of the Chaldean community in El Cajon. Hundreds of people gather at St. Peter Chaldean Catholic Cathedral for services each day.Complete Coverage: Life in El CajonMany Chaldean families left their home country of Iraq searching for a better life, after decades of war and violence against Christians and the church."We all share the same story of leaving and fleeing this persecution in Iraq," says Shaba. He says his family stayed in Greece before being cleared to come to the U.S. in 1994.According to the church, the first known Chaldean migrant came to San Diego in 1951. Within 30 years, the population grew to approximately 2,500. Today, nearly 40,000 Chaldean families have made El Cajon their home."The best part of El Cajon is the community," says doctor John Kasawa.Kasawa sees 15 to 20 patients a day, many of whom are Chaldean. Kasawa says he's one of few Chaldean doctors born in the U.S. He practices holistic and western medicine. Kasawa says his culture sparked his interest in becoming a doctor."They planted the seeds of how natural foods and drinking can have a very beneficial effect on longevity and really quality of life," Kasawa said.Detective Louie Michael, with the El Cajon Police Department, says he's grateful for his parents' bravery."At age 5, my dad was in the military, under that regime, and then we escaped from Iraq to turkey in a refugee camp and then came here at the end of '93," says Michael.He has been with El Cajon Police Department for more than ten years."I looked at the benefit of having a community that has nobody that they can speak to," says Michael. "For ten years, I was the only cop in the department that spoke Arabic and Aramaic."With Michael's help, the department now has five Chaldean officers on the force. (KGTV) - A 13-year-old girl cried during her testimony Wednesday against the man accused of chasing her with machetes in La Mesa.The preliminary hearing started at the El Cajon Courthouse Wednesday morning for Bernard Graham, accused of the violent confrontation at Fletcher Parkway and Amaya Drive in May.The girl’s mother told 10News her daughter stopped to meet a friend on her way to Parkway Middle School, but noticed a man talking and yelling to himself. The man first threw a closed pocket knife at the girl before pulling machetes out of his pants, Tammy Brown said.According to La Mesa Police, Graham threw knives at the girl and chased her until she ran into a Subway sandwich shop to call 911. She was not hurt.RELATED: Officer-involved shooting reported in La MesaOfficers found Graham on Fletcher Parkway and tried to arrest him. Graham refused to drop the knife, police said, and officers fired at least two shots.Graham suffered a bullet wound to the abdomen and was taken to the hospital. A judge will decide whether Graham should stand trial at the end of the preliminary hearing. 1132

EAST VILLAGE (KGTV) -- A woman was wounded in an officer-involved shooting in the East Village Saturday night.San Diego police received numerous calls to an apartment complex on Market Street and Park Boulevard around 10 p.m. about a woman throwing objects out of a window. Officers arrived and found broken glass and furniture on the sidewalk below an apartment.Officials say the woman refused to listen to police and brandished a knife while out the window, continuing to throw objects. The woman refused to come out of the building, prompting police to force their way into the apartment. The woman locked herself in the bathroom, police say. Police used verbal directions, chemical agents, and a police canine to attempt to get the woman into custody, but the woman continued to refuse.The woman grabbed and punched the police canine. When officers made their way into the bathroom, police say she threatened them with a knife. “One officer fearing that he was going to be struck or stabbed with a knife, fired at least one round striking the female,” said Capt. Rich Freedman of the San Diego Police Department.The woman was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening gunshot injuries. The officers were not injured, although some people were hit by objects being thrown out of the window. The woman has not been identified, but she is a 26-year-old resident of San Diego, according to SDPD.The name of the officer involved in the shooting was not released, be he has been with the department for more than 11 years, police said. 1572

(KGTV) — A beloved visitor center and community "treasure" designed by a famed artist is routinely being turned into a trashed party pad.The small building, dubbed the Hubbell Kiosk, is located in the Crestridge Ecological Reserve. Designed by famed artist and architect James Hubbell, the partial build was destroyed by the Cedar Fire in 2003. The wood, clay and straw-filled project was rebuilt several years later.Then last month, Lands Manager Kyle Smith discovered a smashed skylight and a mess inside."Vomit, beer bottles, drug paraphernalia. It looked like a war zone went off," said Smith.The scene they left behind, including wrecked displays and broken chairs, has become a familiar one.Video surveillance has captured the party goers in five break-ins since early August. Some of the faces appear to be repeat revelers.The break-ins leads to thousands of dollars in repairs and extra security precautions. Endangered Habitats Conservancy, the non-profit that oversees the site, hopes someone will recognize the photos of the vandals. Smith has a message for the party-goers."You're not welcome here.
