SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dramatic dash camera video shows the moment two cars sped along San Diego’s State Route 94, leading one of the drivers to lose control and crash. The race happened Thursday just after 8 a.m. near the College Grove avenue exit of westbound SR-94. Video shows two sedans, an Audi and a BMW, drive up fast behind the witness' vehicle and pass him, before the BMW crashes into an unsuspecting driver.“Just a complete surprise,” said a witness who shared his video with 10News and requested to remain anonymous. The witness was taking his mother to the doctor when the sedans approached him from behind. “I just see them come out of nowhere and spin out, and runs into the back of the car,” said the witness. “In real time, I didn’t even see the other car.” “My first thought was, he was running from the cops,” the witness told 10News. The witness said the BMW driver involved in the crash stopped to check on the innocent victim, then went back across the road. No one was injured in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP is investigating what officers say is possibly a racing crash. No arrests have been made. “Ain’t no real reason to go that fast with that many people on the road,” the witness said. “He completely totaled the back of that guy’s car and there could have been a kid back there.” 1348

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Home sales in San Diego are starting to see a dramatic decrease, according to a new report by CoreLogic.Year-to-year, home sales fell nearly 18 percent from September of 2017 to September of 2018. From August to September of this year, home sales fell nearly 22 percent. Since 1988, the average change in sales between August and September is only 9.8 percent.“The nearly 18 percent year-over-year drop in Southern California home sales this September was the largest for any month in almost eight years,” said Andrew LePage, a CoreLogic analyst.Also in September, sales of newly-built homes in Southern California were 46.6 percent below the September average since 1988.The drop in home sales is due to higher prices and rising mortgage rates, according to CoreLogic. Those factors are pricing out some would-be buyers and prompting others to wait and see what happens with the housing market.The median home price in San Diego County in September of 2018 was 5,000, up nearly eight percent from the same time last year, however, the median price fell by 1.4 percent from August to September of 2018.“Price growth is moderating amid slower sales and more listings in many markets,” LePage said. “This is welcome news for potential homebuyers, but many still face a daunting hurdle – the monthly mortgage payment, which has been pushed up sharply by rising mortgage rates.” 1405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hundreds gathered outside Fire Station 21 in Pacific Beach Tuesday evening to remember a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department firefighter killed in a motorcycle crash over the weekend.Ryan Ferrara, 39, was riding on the back of the motorcycle as a passenger when it crashed into a parked vehicle. It happened July 18 at the 13000 block of Piping Rock Lane in the Lakeside area.The driver of the motorcycle was hospitalized; he has not yet been identified. Authorities say neither the driver nor Ferrara were wearing helmets.RELATED: San Diego firefighter killed in Lakeside-area motorcycle crashThe crash is still under investigation, but the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office says alcohol or drugs may have been factors in the crash.Many who knew Ferrara were visibly distraught during Tuesday's remembrance ceremony. At sunset, the crowds moved to the boardwalk and sands. Many firefighters were there to show the family their support.Capt. Rich Marcello, who worked with Ferrara, says it's a Fire Station 21 tradition to go down to the beach and watch the sunset after every shift when possible."Every evening, we come out and watch the sunset and gather round each other and kind of hang out with each other, which is why we're here with the family today," he said.Before he was a firefighter, Ferrara was a lifeguard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For over a decade, SDSU associate professor of chemistry Gregory Holland has been researching spiders and particularly black widow’s silk.They’ve come to the realization, through their research, that the properties of black widow silk are stronger than steel and tougher than the Kevlar in bulletproof vests.Gregory Holland, SDSU associate professor of analytical chemistry and Northwestern chemistry professor Nathan Gianneschi said their collaboration shows the organization of the molecules involved in silk production is more complex than previously thought.There are companies that use synthetic spider silk but its the specific black widow spider silk that has the top tier benefits.“The synthetic spider silk its not a bad material, its just not as good as the real thing," Holland said.Holland says the company that creates synthetic silk actually has partnerships with Adidas and Patagonia. "The most important thing is a spider does it low energy, environmentally friendly. It’s just protein water and salt”.Once they reach the point where they’re able to identically replicate the silk of a black widow spider, the artificial version could be used in building materials for bridges or environmentally friendly replacements for plastic.Black widows (Latrodectus hesperus) spin a lightweight thread much stronger than that of other spider species, with draglines that can stretch an extra 25 percent of their length before snapping.The composition of the spun silk fibers was previously identified, but the structure of the proteins involved in producing them has been more of a mystery, now one step closer. 1650
