BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- China and Portugal agreed here Wednesday to enhance friendly exchanges and cooperation.     Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin met with Portuguese parliament speaker Jaime Gama on Wednesday.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, spoke highly of China-Portugal relations and noted that China always conducted its ties with Portugal from a strategic, long-term perspective and is ready to advance their comprehensive strategic partnership. VIENNA, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo and Austrian Acting Chancellor Josef Proll met here on Saturday, with both sides agreeing to expand bilateral trade and economic cooperation in the fight against the ongoing world financial crisis.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), said China's development has provided even greater room for expanding economic and technological cooperation with Austria. In the process of addressing the consequences of the financial crisis, the Austrian government places great importance on strengthening economic and technological relations with China.     China witnessed an economic growth of 6.1 percent in the first quarter of this year, while Austria's economy contracted 2.8 percent in the same period.     Noting that the two economies are highly complementary, Wu said China has a huge market and Austria has advanced technologies in many fields. He said China is ready to expand cooperation with Austria in such areas as energy efficiency, environment protection, water conservancy, eco-agriculture, auto parts and clean energy, so as to foster new growth spots of both economies.     Proll said Austria will actively transfer advanced technology to China in a bid to expand cooperative areas and carry out large-scale projects. UNITED NATIONS, June 15 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called for the peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations.     La Yifan, minister-counselor of China's Permanent Mission to the UN, told a Security Council meeting that China has always called for resolving the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations in a peaceful manner.     "China always believes that resolving this issue through diplomatic means is in the interest of peace and security in the Middle East and is in the common interest of the international community," he said.     La said China is ready to continue to play a constructive role in this regard.     At present, "rare opportunities" exist with regard to the restart of the negotiations with Iran over the nuclear issue, he said.     La called on Iran to strengthen its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to resolve outstanding issues as early as possible.     He also urged the international community to seize the opportunity to intensify diplomatic efforts so as to ensure an early start of the negotiations.

QINGDAO, April 20 (Xinhua) -- China's senior navy officer said here Monday that the international fleet review to be held in east port city Qingdao on Thursday is aimed at promoting understanding about China's military development.     Ding Yiping, deputy commander of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, told Xinhua in an exclusive interview that the review would serve as a platform for navies from other countries to increase their understanding about China and the Chinese navy. China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) kicks off a grand maritime ceremony to mark the 60th anniversary of its navy at 6 p.m. Monday off the coast of the eastern city of Qingdao,China's Shandong Province, April 20, 2009    "Suspicions about China being a 'threat' to world security are mostly because of misunderstandings and lack of understandings about China," Ding said.     "The suspicions would disappear if foreign counterparts could visit the Chinese navy and know about the true situations."     Ding also said the review is expected to build a platform for navies from different countries to enhance understanding about each other and for navy leaders to address matters on safeguarding global sea security.     High-level delegations from 29 countries and 21 vessels from 14countries will take part in the review, according to the Defence Ministry.     China would send domestic-made warships and weapons to the review, including the debut of its nuclear submarines.     As the review is to start in days, Ding said the weather in Qingdao is their "prime concern" for the review.     "It would definitely affect the review if bad weather appears," Ding said, "such as rain and fog."     But Ding also said that according to weather forecast, the cold air which caused rain and heavy wind in Qingdao since Saturday afternoon would come to an end by Wednesday. He is confident that the weather on Thursday would be good enough for the review to go smoothly, if "no major weather accidents happen."
