SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was hospitalized after being shot as he sat in his car at a Southcrest park, San Diego police said.The incident happened just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 4100 block of Newton Avenue, according to police.The 26-year-old victim and a 19-year-old man were sitting in a BMW when two men walked up to the car. Police said the two men pounded on the car’s windows before they opened fire.The victim was shot in the left thigh and left wrist, police said. The 19-year-old was not hurt.The victim drove the bullet-riddled BMW away from the park and called 911 to report the shooting. Police made contact with the BMW on National Avenue and the victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.According to police, the suspected shooters are believed to have fled the park in a white pickup truck. Twelve shell casings were recovered at the scene, police added.Descriptions of the two suspected shooters were not immediately available. 984

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Hazardous Materials Team is investigating a Rancho Bernardo residence following reports of a possible fentanyl overdose death at the home Thursday morning.Crews responded at around 4 a.m. to calls of an overdose at a residence at 11300 Calenda Road located a few blocks from Westwood Elementary School.First responders discovered an unconscious 27-year-old male. The victim was declared deceased at the scene, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Office officials. Neighbors told 10News the man lived at the home with his parents.While at the scene, our 10News crew saw a woman being escorted out of the house and placed in an ambulance. It’s still unclear how she’s involved.The San Diego County Medical Examiner will identify the man and confirm his cause of death. 800

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new alliance of San Diegans with a mission to end gun violence launched their new collation Tuesday night.More than 200 people were there for the formation of San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention, made up of four local chapter of national groups:  Brady Campaign, Moms Demand Action, Survivors Empowered and Sandy Hook Promise.”“We really think expanded background checks in every state would go a long way,” said Wendy Wheatcroft, the driving force behind the creation of the coalition. “California definitely has the strongest gun laws and should be an example to the rest of the country, and we’re hoping other states follow suit.”“I want to emphasize all the organization here’s support the second amendment, and we’re not trying to take anyone’s guns away,” Wheatcroft said.Michael Schwartz is with the San Diego County Gun Owners; he says the country before looking at gun laws. The country needs to take a hard look at the mental health system.“If you look at the mass shooting that made the headlines,” Schwartz said, “There have been mental health issues, they raised red flags, and no one was there to help.”Like President Trump, Schwartz also believes in exploring the idea of teachers packing heat.“If there is a teacher that is licensed and trained and wanted to protect themselves in the classroom, she shouldn’t be stopped by state law,” Schwartz said, “Her right to defend herself doesn’t end in the classroom.”  1470

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new social media trend is hoping to help local food places hit hard by this COVID-19 pandemic.Currently, restaurants in the county are only allowed to serve food through take-out, delivery, or drive-thru service. Some restaurants have had to close altogether, not able to afford to keep their doors open. For those businesses trying to stay open, the community is lending its support through #takeoutchallenge.Sports Director Ben Higgins called it the easiest challenge in history. “All you have to do is go order take out from one of your local restaurants,” he said in a video posted to Twitter. Ben ordered food from Buona Forchetta in Encinitas.Others also chimed in on social media.Jason tweeted that he ordered from Mama Kat’s in San Marcos for the first time. On Twitter, Ed gave a shout out to Firehouse Subs in Kearny Mesa and said he ordered twice there this past week. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A non-profit and business owner came together to donate thousands of dollars to families in need during the pandemic Wednesday.Non-profit Black San Diego started up in September with the goal of bolstering Black-owned businesses and giving them tools to succeed.They have a Facebook page with 36,000 members.On December 19th, Porschia Wyatt posted asking for prayers for her family."Recently my husband was laid off from his job, he works for the Cheesecake Factory, so time’s been hard for me and my family," she said.She and her husband have a 15-year-old daughter, 7 and 8-year-old sons and a 20-month old daughter.Getting Christmas presents was going to be hard, and November 16th made it even more difficult."I had just ate pizza and next thing you know I started throwing up and I couldn’t breath or anything so I was rushed to the hospital," she said she had an abdominal blockage.She underwent three surgeries and came home on the 25th. Now she had huge medical bills to worry about, which was what pushed her to type a message to the BSD community.She got an overwhelming response, more than a hundred comments and a surprise at her doorstep Wednesday morning.Jaime Harris, owner of Big Block Realty, was holding a giant check for ,000."There are so many families that are affected you know? Of course, we want to help the Black-owned businesses, but we realize our community is definitely suffering because they’re shut down and without a job," CEO of BSD, Sheri Jones said.She hopes the donation will bridge the gap, make their Christmas a little more merry and spread kindness during a season of giving."I would just like to say thank you and I appreciate the help and I appreciate everyone who helped with my family and reaching out to me and I really appreciate it and god bless everyone," Wyatt said. 1844
