EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — One person is dead after their vehicle became airborne and crashed, sending metal and pieces of the vehicle across the roadway.California Highway Patrol troopers tried to stop the vehicle on eastbound Interstate 8 at about 2 a.m. Saturday before the driver sped off.Troopers pursued the vehicle, which began picking up speed as it left the highway, CHP said.At one point, witnesses told 10News the vehicle hit a dip on Main St. near Jamacha Rd. at a high speed and became airborne. The driver lost control of the car and crashed, colliding with a tree and wall along the road.The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not immediately identified.The crash sent pieces of the vehicle flying in all directions including the car's engine block, which was dislodged and found across the road.TRAFFIC: Live traffic conditions around San Diego"Seemed like just 30 minutes of just crashing and metal everywhere," one witness said. "Just a horrific sound. (KGTV) -- A former Uber driver who pleaded guilty to raping a female passenger and sexually assaulting as many as 14 others was sentenced in court Wednesday.A judge sentenced John David Sanchez, 53, to 80 years in prison. Sanchez pleaded guilty in August to 34 charges including rape and sodomy of an unconscious person.Sanchez was initially arrested about a month after a woman told police she was raped by Sanchez in February of 2016.RELATED: Uber driver accused of rape to be arraignedSanchez was fired by Uber. (KGTV) — The El Cajon officer who was seriously injured after being dragged by a vehicle has been released from the hospital.Officer Nick Cirello was struck by a vehicle on Dec. 14 in the 100 block of W. Washington Ave. at about 8:30 a.m., after officers responded to a call of a vehicle blocking the roadway with the driver and passenger asleep in the vehicle.When the officers awoke the two, the driver gave identification for someone else. The driver suddenly started the vehicle and started to put it in gear, when one of the officers, Cirello, attempted to stop him. Cirello was dragged for a distance by the vehicle while still partially inside and hit by another vehicle traveling past the incident, police said.RELATED: Suspect wanted after El Cajon officer dragged by car is from well-known Guam familyCirello was ejected from the vehicle and taken to a nearby trauma center was placed in intensive care. He is expected to make a full recovery following his release.Police have identified the suspected driver in the incident as 41-year-old David Francis Cepeda Pangilinan. EL CAJON (CNS) - A resident at an East County independent-living facility was ordered Thursday to stand trial on a murder charge for allegedly killing a fellow resident by beating him in the face and head with a frying pan following an early morning argument.Brad Masaru Payton, 26, faces 26 years to life in state prison if convicted of the murder charge and an allegation of personally using a deadly weapon in the killing of Matthew McCarthy.Police said the violence at the transitional group home in the 1200 block of Naranca Avenue in El Cajon was reported shortly before 5 a.m. last Dec. 20. Patrol officers arrived to find a badly beaten McCarthy in a bedroom at the residence, said El Cajon Police Lt. Payton was arrested without incident.According to Miller, the victim and the defendant knew each other and lived in separate rooms. (KGTV) — One man suffered severe injuries after he was hit by a vehicle in El Cajon on Saturday.El Cajon Police said the collision occurred at Jamacha Rd. and Sunnyland Ave. just before 6:30 p.m. It wasn't immediately clear how the man was struck by the vehicle.The man suffered head trauma and a severed foot, according to police. He was found unconscious when police arrived before he was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition was not immediately known.The driver remained at the scene. ECPD said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor.Traffic on Jamacha Rd., from Lexington to Washington, will be closed for at least two hours while police investigate. 691
