Two other related bills, PCB APC 18-07 and 18-08, deal with open records issues. PCB 18-07 would create several public records exemptions for a person reporting criminal activity, confidential meetings of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Commission, and for information on school marshal appointees. PCB 18-08 would exempt victims of mass violence from public records laws. 381

Two weeks before voters headed to the polls, the President promised middle-class Americans another tax cut, saying it would be introduced by Congress in a week or two.Trump said at the time that his administration had been working with Brady on a plan "very hard for a pretty long period of time."But in recent days that promise appeared to fade as even Brady tried to provide some political cover for the President's tax proposal, stressing it would be a top priority for the next Congress only if Republicans are able to maintain their leadership in both chambers."We expect to advance this in the new session if Republicans maintain control of the House and Senate," Brady said during an interview with CNBC last Friday.Forecasters are predicting that Democrats will win the House, potentially setting up a split Congress, making any tax proposal a heavy lift for GOP lawmakers. The President's tax promise had sent Washington into a frenzy as reporters, politicians and analysts alike tried to figure out what he was talking about, leaving many to surmise there was no plan in sight and zero chance Congress could pass a bill in time."There is no plan," said Howard Gleckman, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center. "There was never a plan."Even so, Trump's new promise has sparked rumors in Washington over a number of strategies Republicans could employ to fulfill the President's pledge depending on next Tuesday's outcome, with each presenting their own set of tricky hurdles."We're not done yet," the two men said in the statement. "America's workers deserve to keep more of what they earn."The Trump administration and GOP party leaders have been in active conversations for months about other tax measures that could be undertaken in coming years. In September, the House voted to make individual tax cuts, which are set to expire in 2025, permanent. And there are a host of other tax issues Republicans would like to get to, include retirement savings and education tax benefits."If there is a Republican Congress and a Republican president, there will be a tax cut every single year," said Grover Norquist, president of the Americans for Tax Reform.Brady, who speaks regularly with Trump and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, had previously suggested Congress could follow through on the President's pledge using a symbolic gesture, formerly known as a nonbinding resolution, offering Republicans' commitment to another middle-class tax cut. 2456

What we found out is that about one in five users disposes of the contact lenses by throwing them into the bathroom sink or in the toilet, lead author Rolf Halden, director of the university's Center for Environmental Health Engineering, said Monday at a news conference at a meeting of the American Chemical Society. The study was presented at the meeting but has not been published or peer-reviewed, which are considered a gold standard in medical and scientific research. After being flushed, the lenses float through the wastewater system to sewage treatment plants. Halden said the researchers tested 11 brands of contacts and found that they don't degrade during the treatment process but tear into smaller and smaller pieces. The fragments are heavier than water, so they settle into the treated sewage sludge, which is often spread on land. The lenses can then make their way into rivers, lakes and the ocean through runoff."It sounds like a very small problem, because the lenses themselves are tiny, but they come by the billions," Halden said. The study estimated that about 45 million people wear contact lenses in the US alone."What we find is that there are billions of lenses ending up in US wastewater every year. They contribute a load of at least 20,000 kilograms per year of contact lenses," Halden said. That's between 6 and 10 metric tons of lenses, according to the study.Study co-author Charlie Rolsky said contact lenses are different than short-use plastics like straws, plastic bags or styrofoam because they are so important to people who wear them."It is a very personal high-value plastic that people sort of take for granted and utilize every day of their lives," Rolsky said.Halden said people don't think of the lenses as plastic waste because they feel like fluid, almost like water. They even come in tiny packets of saline solution. But even people who describe themselves as environmentally conscious admitted flushing their lenses, he noted."We have created an almost immortal material. It does not go away. It does not biodegrade," Halden said. This is a good thing when it comes to contact lenses, because, he said, you don't want them to degrade in the user's eye, which could impair vision or become a breeding ground for bacteria.Contact lenses are a small part of the pollution problem, Rolsky said, but he hopes that the findings encourage people to think more about how to get rid of plastic waste."This might have been a different experiment had there been labeling on a lot of these boxes sort of specifying 'maybe dispose of these with solid waste and please avoid having them go down a drain'; maybe it would be a different story," he said.Contact wearers should throw their lenses in the trash or recycle them, the researchers advise. 2779
