HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. — One family in Indianapolis got a present a little early this holiday season.U.S. Navy Lt. Tawnee Hinton has been in Djibouti, Africa with the Combined Joint Task Force working on counterterrorism operations for the last 14 months. While she was deployed, her four children, Amelia, 5; Leyton, 9; Avarie, 13, and Christian, 21, were only able to talk their mother over FaceTime or texting.“Though the Navy has taken me away from my family on several occasions, and my husband was deployed numerous times before his retirement, this was a particularly lengthy deployment,” Hinton said. One event Hinton didn’t miss this year was her daughter Avarie’s choir concert. Unknown to her children, Hinton was able to come home early and surprise them. 796

High school lunch time is typically a time where you can see the hierarchy at school--who’s popular, who isn’t. For many students, the isolation can be devastating. But one Colorado school is bringing people together and preventing bullying in a unique way.A table brought students Sydney Martin and Mirsadys Wilson together.“I came over here and I just wanted to make sure she was OK,” says Martin. “And I instantly saw the quote and I looked at her piece and I was like, ‘Dang.’”The quote reads, “Be kind.”It inspired martin to sit with Wilson, who was eating alone.“She was just like being really supportive,” says Wilson. “So, I was like, ‘wow, girl’s cool.’”That's the point of the Together Table--to make inclusion and connection easy.People at the National Mall in DC added the positive messages on the table. Then, the table was gifted to Central High School in Pueblo, Colorado by the No Bully Organization.“At first, they were a little timid. They weren't sure what it is,” says assistant principal Zach Odell. “They saw these little stools and all this riding on it and they didn't quite know what to take, because they're just used to being in their comfort zone. But once they really got going with the table, it turned out pretty good.”Odell says it's helps make lunch time less isolating, especially for students who may be bullied or excluded.“This table eliminates that you can't exclude somebody from sit with you because of the way this table is shaped,” Odell says.He and students say its open design makes meeting new people less intimidating. 1576
George Floyd, the man who died in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department in late May and whose death has sparked a nationwide protest movement against police brutality, was buried in Pearland, Texas, Tuesday following a private funeral. The funeral took place at The Fountain of Praise Church in Houston. It was livestreamed online and carried live by several news networks. Memorial services for Floyd have already been held in Minneapolis, the city where he lived his final years, and in North Carolina, the state in which he was born. Floyd lived the majority of his life in Houston.WATCH REPLAY"Tuesday's funeral followed a public viewing, which was held on Monday afternoon and evening. On May 25, Floyd was arrested after he allegedly attempted to use a counterfeit bill to buy tobacco at a Minneapolis convenience store. Officers later found him in a car, which was still parked outside the store. Police have said Floyd was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.Officers pulled Floyd out of the car and handcuffed him. As they restrained him, bystander video shows one police officer, Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes as Floyd yelled he couldn't breathe. Chauvin continued to kneel on Floyd's neck for several minutes, even after he became unresponsive. The bystander video quickly went viral, prompting a wave of outrage. Protests in Floyd's name have drawn thousands of demonstrators in dozens of major cities around the world for more than a week, calling for a change in policing, diverting funds for police to other social programs and an end to systemic racism. 1643
