SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family grieved the loss of a father, mother and daughter after a raging fire at their Logan Heights home in October.Thursday evening Aunt Rosa Cortes explained how the two surviving children, Wendy, 23, and Angel, 16, were faring. She described areas of Wendy's back and shoulder healing from the burns, saying her skin is getting it's color back.She said her niece and nephew are having a hard time sleeping, saying in Spanish, "every noise, every sound scares them."The fire ignited October 13th, around 4:30 a.m.. Neighbors woke up to screams. Ultimately the father, Jose Antonio Romero Mayo, 44, Daughter Iris, 21, and mother, Nicolasa Mayo-Cortes, 46, died from their injuries.Aunt Rosa said Jose was her favorite brother. She called him her protector.Now she's protecting his two surviving children, saying they can continue staying with her as long as they need.Thursday the family reunited inside Faith on 54th in Oak Park.Cortes said the caskets remained closed and she didn't want to remember them the way they died.Her nephew, Wilber Romero, 26, was arrested on Arson and Homicide charges.She said Wendy and Angel haven't been told about their brother's possible involvement, instead waiting for them to heal before asking questions.Cortes said they need help, psychologically and monetarily to move forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Flu cases have more than doubled in San Diego County than this time last year, health officials reported Wednesday. Six hundred patients have been diagnosed with influenza so far this flu season, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services (HHS) Agency. The number of cases soared last week, with 139 people diagnosed with the flu. During the same week last year, 57 flu cases were reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hoteliers across San Diego are seeing a significant loss of business from mass cancellations as efforts continue to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus. The San Diego Convention Center Corp. reports five conferences have either been canceled or postponed, meaning upwards of 43,000 people would not be coming to San Diego and spending money locally. "The hotel industry has seen a significant drop in business, a significant impact on the workforce," said Namara Mercer, who chairs the San Diego Hotel Motel Association. "Anecdotally the shifts are being cut, people aren’t going to work if occupancy is not high."LIST: San Diego events, schools that have changed plans due to the coronavirusAs conferences cancel, large convention hotels downtown are finding themselves with hundreds, if not thousands, of unexpected empty rooms. That can be costly also to other hotels. "What do they do? They reduce their rates - the big convention hotels - and then they start taking away business from all of us who are in outlying areas," said Bob Rauch, CEO of RAR Hospitality, which owns three San Diego County hotels and manages nine others.Rauch said cancellations were up 15 percent last week, and he expects that to increase to 25 percent this week. He says he expects it to peak next week at 35 percent before he expects things to calm down. As of now, he has not cut staff hours, but he said things could change if the loss of business continues to persist. "If this worsens over the next couple of weeks, we will create some kind of shared pain program," said Rauch, adding that it would likely involve cutting hours across the board so no employees are laid off. As of December, there were 31,700 people in the county working for hotels, up about 2.6 percent from December 2018, according to the state Employment Development Department. 1868

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — During a closed session meeting on Friday, the county Board of Supervisors voted to appeal a recent court's decision to allow strip clubs and restaurants to reopen amid California's regional stay-at-home order.While the board voted to appeal the ruling, Chairman Greg Cox said they have directed the county's legal counsel to only argue against the operation of strip clubs and allowing indoor dining despite California's coronavirus restrictions."The Board voted to appeal the order. But the Board directed County Counsel to only argue that the order is incorrect as it relates to the continued operation of strip clubs and the allowance of indoor dining. We support outdoor dining with appropriate safety protocols that have been previously established. We remind everyone that the virus is still out there.
