SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The University of California system has appointed its first-ever Black president in the system’s history, Cal Matters said Tuesday.Michael V. Drake will become the 21st president of the University of California.Drake is making the move after leaving The Ohio State University last week. There, he served as the university’s president from 2014 to 2020.Drake was also chancellor of UC Irvine for nine years and served as the University of California vice president for health affairs from 2000 to 2005.“Much has changed in the 15 years since I was given the privilege of becoming chancellor at UC Irvine, but not my absolute belief in this great University and its time-honored mission,” Drake said. “I look forward to working with the regents, chancellors, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our broader community as we, together, guide the University through the challenging times ahead. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The United States Postal Service is handling nearly 16 billion deliveries this holiday season, a record number.Warren Burton, a program manager at the USPS, says it is a 12 percent increase from last year.“There’s a lot of online shopping,” he said, “a lot more than last year.” As a result, the USPS processing and distribution center at Carmel Mountain Ranch in San Diego added more seasonal workers. About 1,100 people are working around the clock up from the normal staffing of close to 900.“We gear up all year for this time of the year, we know it’s going to be non-stop, high volume-high demand,” Burton added.The White House declared Christmas Eve a federal holiday this year, but Burton says that USPS will remain open on Christmas Eve.“We greatly appreciate the gesture, but we’re going to keep working so we can keep the mail going,” Burton said.He says Dec. 20 is the last day to mail out a package or holiday card to make sure it is delivered by Christmas Day using regular shipping. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The officer who saved two twin toddlers and their dad after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs was recognized for his heroic efforts this week.San Diego Police K9 officer Jonathan Wiese was awarded the Medal of Valor and Heroic Act award from the California Surf Lifesaving Association and United States Lifesaving Association for his efforts to save the three people on June 13.SDPD received a call about a suicidal man with twin two-year-old girls driving with the intention of careening off the Coronado Bridge. You're not going to stand there on the cliff and watch it happen," he told ABC 10News in June. "And by then four or five other cops had shown up so I pretty much threw the end of the leash to them and then I said hang on and I just jumped off."The officer also performed rescue breathing on one of the girls who was limp after being pulled from the wreck.Wiese is the same officer who helped apprehend the suspected Poway synagogue shooter in April 2019.
