RALEIGH, N.C. — Young rising GOP star Madison Cawthorn has been elected to represent a North Carolina U.S. House district. The 25-year-old's win in the 11th Congressional District allows him to fill a vacant seat previously held by Republican Rep. Mark Meadows. Meadows left to serve as President Donald Trump’s chief of staff. Cawthorn defeated Democrat and retired U.S. Air Force Col. Moe Davis. Cawthorn will be one of the youngest people to ever serve in the U.S. Congress. He first drew attention after defeating Trump’s preferred candidate in an upset in the June GOP primary runoff.The previous youngest elected member in modern history was Alexandria Ocasio Cortez who was 29 years when she was sworn in for her first term in January 2018. The youngest member of the House of Representatives ever elected was William Charles Cole Claiborne of Tennessee, according to U.S. House records. (AP) — A Kentucky couple who refused to sign a self-isolation order when one tested positive for the coronavirus said they were placed under house arrest.Elizabeth Linscott of Radcliff told news outlets she was tested July 11 for COVID-19 because she wanted to visit her grandparents and received a positive result the next day. Linscott said the health department emailed her a form to sign that said she would check in daily, self isolate and let officials know if she has to be treated at the hospital.The form said the isolation order is to “prevent the introduction, transmission and spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus in this state.”Linscott said she declined to sign because of one sentence: “I will not travel by any public, commercial or health care conveyance such as ambulance, bus, taxi, airplane, train or boat without the prior approval of the Department of Public Health.”“I could not comply to having to call the public health department prior if I had an emergency or I had to go pick something up for my child or myself as a necessity and could not wait,” Linscott said.When she declined to sign the form she said she was told the case would be escalated and on July 16, Linscott said she and her husband were placed under house arrest with ankle monitors.Hardin County Sheriff John Ward said his office was on hand to execute court documents from a Hardin County Circuit Court judge. Residents along the coast of New Jersey, New York and parts of New England were placed under a tropical storm watch Sunday as Hurricane Jose inches it way closer to the United States mainland. Meanwhile, a hurricane watch was issued for the US Virgin Islands as Maria became a hurricane Sunday evening. Hurricane Jose packed top sustained winds of 90 MPH as of early Sunday evening. The center of the storm is expected to stay over the Atlantic Ocean, but the storm's backside could scrape parts of the Northeast. The threat of wind, rain and deadly rip currents prompted the National Hurricane Center to place parts of the Northeast under a tropical storm watch. The potential for danger is even greater in the Caribbean. The US Virgin Islands, which took a devastating hit from Hurricane Irma, is under a hurricane watch ahead of Hurricane Maria. Maria packed top winds of 75 MPH as of early Sunday evening. The hurricane is expected to strengthen into a Category 3 storm by Tuesday. After passing near the Virgin Islands, Irma could make a direct impact on Puerto Rico.  1111
