SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With some K-12 schools returning to in-person learning in San Diego County, more testing sites for school personnel will be available starting Thursday.The County of San Diego is partnering with the San Diego County Office of Education to open four new testing locations dedicated to testing of school employees. The first two will open in Chula Vista and San Diego on Thursday. They can move back into general campus housing when they are no longer infectious.The school launched a dashboard on its website to show the current number of positive cases for staff and students both on and off-campus.Students on campus will be tested for COVID-19 twice a month through the school year. 1728

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — TwitchCon guests in San Diego for a weekend of gaming won't be celebrating the three-day convention with at least one headliner.Rapper Lil Nas X suddenly dropped out of TwitchCon's annual convention party set for Saturday night at Petco Park. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two fires sparked Saturday afternoon in East County, in addition to a thunderstorm in Pine Valley, created dicey conditions for firefighters.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said the humidity made a huge difference, "the monsoonal moisture the stickiness has been good because it's helped keep our fires small," slowing the spread of flames.The Bratton Fire sparked in Lawson Valley around 1:30 p.m. and scorched 4 acres. Then around 2:10 p.m., the Sloane Fire started burning in Dehesa, blackening 18 acres.Both were knocked down quickly."We hope that people don't get complacent that we've hit these fires very aggressively and it's worked out," Shoots said.He said if we didn't have the humidity we would be in trouble, "there's a lot of fuel that comes with a good winter so that grass crop is all cured out and ready to burn."Shoots said they were keeping their eye on the thunderstorm in Pine Valley.The National Weather Service reported a severe thunderstorm warning with quarter-sized hail and gusts up to 60 miles per hour."We knew it wasn't going to be to the extent that the north saw when the storms rolled through but it was still definitely a potential concern," Shoots said.Looking forward, Shoots says we need to be very careful, "San Diego and a good chunk of California is sitting at a higher potential for wildfire activity in October-November."He advises creating defensible space around your home not only to protect your home but protect your family if you can't escape in time.Shoots said he hopes firefighters are able to get a handle on the fires in Northern California and stay safe.He said 96% of all Cal Fire engines are working, which shows how extreme this fire season is.More than half of Cal Fire San Diego's resources have been sent up north to help, including 32 engines. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the March 2020 Presidential Primary approaching, the San Diego Registrar of Voters is urging everyone to make sure they are registered properly."This one election is the most complex elections for administrators like ourselves and voters that are out there," says Registrar Michael Vu.With six political parties holding presidential primaries, plus the dozens of overlapping state and local district elections, Vu expects to create more than 12,000 unique versions of the ballot. Rules on who can vote in each party make it even more complicated.In December, Vu's office sent out more than 500,000 mailers to voters to make sure they know the options.Anyone registered with a specific party will only be allowed to vote in that party's primary. Republicans will vote for the Republican candidates, Democrats for Democrats and so on.But, right now more then 30 percent of registered voters in San Diego are listed as "No-Party Preference."For those people, they can choose to vote in the primary for American Independent, Democrat, or Libertarian parties. They cannot vote in the Republican, Green, or Peace and Freedom parties."It makes it a little more confusing," says Vu. "Something that voters need to know what political party status they are in. And if it’s different from the presidential candidates they want to vote for, they need to register or re-register now."To help voters navigate their options, the Registrar has set up a website where people can get all the information they need.The deadline to choose a party, or to choose which primary you want to vote in, is January 6."If you’re a non-partisan voter, now is the time to act," says Vu. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Vandals damaged a park in Sabre Springs Thursday night, dumping sand into toilets and scrawling inappropriate graffiti on the walls. Trash cans were emptied out and piles of wood chips were dumped along the entrance to the South Creek Neighborhood Park. The clogged toilets and sinks caused minor flooding in the bathrooms. Some of the plumbing was also damaged, according to the San Diego Police Department. City crews cleaned up the mess by the afternoon. Police were still searching for the culprits Friday. 537
