Ontario’s minister of sport said in a speech that the Ontario Hockey League will not have bodychecking this season.Lisa MacLeod told the Empire Club of Canada that removing purposeful physical contact is a necessity for all sports in the province to slow the spread of COVID-19“Not just in the OHL, not just in hockey in general, but in all sports,” MacLeod said. "We’re in a very serious game right now and the reality is we have to take those public health precautions.”The OHL announced Thursday that it plans to start a shortened season on Feb. 4, the last of Canada’s three major junior leagues to release a schedule.“Until such time as we arrive at an agreed upon Return to Play protocol with the Government of Ontario, the League will have no further comment on the matter of body contact,” the OHL said in a statement.The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season started earlier this month, but the schedule has been affected by several COVID-19 outbreaks as well as provincial government restrictions. On Tuesday night, thousands of fans will fill Ford Field in Detroit to see Taylor Swift perform. In the crowd, will be 15-year-old Tiffany Kleinschmidt of Waterford.The teen, who's a huge T Swift fan, suffered a traumatic brain injury last April after going into cardiac arrest at school. She's been in the hospital for months learning how to walk and talk again, but on Tuesday, she'll leave for the first time since the tragedy. She'll be going to the Taylor Swift concert. Taylor's music has been instrumental in Tiffany's healing. You can see it here:"She's very, very smart and she still is, but she's a lot different than she used to be. She really lights up when she listens to Taylor. She sings to all of her songs. She loves her," says Tiffany's mom, Dawn.The concert tickets were donated to Tiffany by a total stranger named Laken Tiller. Laken grew up in Windsor, but lives in Quebec and works as a nurse. She's also a superfan of Taylor Swift and had purchased tickets.She realized she couldn't go, but didn't want to sell the tickets. She decided to donate them to someone who could really use a night out.So, Laken contacted Children's Hospital of Michigan. The hospital did an extensive search and decided Tiffany would be perfect for the surprise gift.Laken says she sees people who are sick all the time because of her job and she wanted to do something nice for someone who could use a break."I hope that she gets to meet Taylor Swift," she says. 1512

(KGTV) - Lifeguards saw a lot more people up and down San Diego's beaches, and with that, a lot more rule breakers."It’s definitely the start of summer, we’ve been pretty busy this weekend," Del Mar Lifeguard Chief Jon Edelbrock said.In Oceanside 10News saw a couple families staked out under umbrellas brought from home, just feet away a man was buried in the sand. All of which is not yet allowed under county orders.Right now you are allowed to exercise on the beach, walk or jog. In the water people can swim, surf, boat and fish. You cannot have gatherings, play sports or sit on the beach.Edelbrock said most of the crowd is following the rules, "probably 80% are coming down with good intentions."That other 20% then has to be contacted by police or lifeguards trying to enforce orders to stop the spread of the coronavirus."Their [lifeguards'] primary function is to facilitate safety out in the ocean to watch the water, watch over our kids and make rescues and do first aide and that kind of thing. Daily we’re making 1,000 extra contacts for people not considering the current rule set," Edelbrock said today's water conditions weren't great, making it more important to keep an eye seaward.In Pacific Beach a neighbor snapped a photo of a woman holding her dog, standing on the closed boardwalk while an officer was writing something. The neighbor said it was a ticket.Friday law enforcement said they would be out Memorial Day weekned enforcing the eased restrictions."It’s doing a disservice for those trying to do the right thing," Edelbrock said it also negatively affects those working to enforce the rules and puts them at risk.Chris Vanos, chief steward of Teamsters 911, said he's seen fights break out when lifeguards encourage people to follow the rules. Notre Dame became the second college this week to cancel in-person classes and move online because of a spike in coronavirus cases on campus.During an address to students Tuesday, Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins said the spike was likely from off-campus gatherings in the last week, according to the school’s contact tracing efforts.Every student at Notre Dame, roughly 12,000, was tested before they returned to campus to start class on August 10, and there were just 33 students who tested positive according to the school.Just a week later, on Monday, of 927 students who were tested, 147 were positive for the coronavirus.“For at least the next two weeks we will move undergraduate classes to remote instruction, close public spaces on campus, and restrict resident halls to residents only,” Rev. Jenkins told students.Students living off-campus are urged to remain there and only allow roommates into their dwelling.Rev. Jenkins also said student gatherings will be limited to only ten people. The previous limit when school started last week was 20 people.“If these steps are not successful, we will have to send students home,” Rev. Jenkins said.The University of North Carolina also announced this week they would be transitioning to remote learning following a spike in positive coronavirus tests on campus.The university reported 129 confirmed COVID-19 cases last week, and a jump in its positivity rate from 2.8% to 13.6%. The university said it has tested 954 students with 177 in isolation and 349 in quarantine. The university said that most of the infected students have mild symptoms.Also on Tuesday, Michigan State University pushed back their start date and announced they will be doing remote learning as well. In a statement posted by MSU's president, the school did not cite a specific spike in their area, but rather what they are seeing at other institutions as they return to campus. "It has become evident to me that, despite our best efforts and strong planning, it is unlikely we can prevent widespread transmission of COVID-19 between students if our undergraduates return to campus," the statement from President Samuel Stanley Jr., M.D., reads.
