Sitting in the front seat of his white Ryder semi-truck, Graig Morin often has some of the best views of Maine as he crisscrosses the state making deliveries. But the best seat in this cab belongs to his dog, Lilly.Morin is the owner of Brown Dog Carriers in Biddeford, Maine, where dogs aren’t just a part of the company name, they’re part of the payroll.“My wife got her when she was a puppy. She’s 12-years-old now,” Morin said looking at Lilly, a chocolate lab, whose front whiskers have started growing gray with time.Lilly likely does not know that an entire business is named after her, but she has provided plenty of company over the years. Morin estimates the pair has traveled the better part of 500,000 miles together. She’s become such a fixture in his passenger seat that customers often wonder when she’s not around.“A lot of time at deliveries I’ll get, ‘Where’s the dog?’” he added. These days, the trips have become more frequent. In the spring, Morin and Lilly started seeing a massive uptick in business. Deliveries were skyrocketing with people quarantined at home. At the same time, though, Morin also saw other small businesses struggling and wanted to help.“Why not? If everyone that could, did, we’d live in a much better world,” he said about the company’s response. With the extra money they were making, Brown Dog would give out free coffee to first responders. They've been moving folding chairs to area hospitals that needed them and have helped local manufacturers transport their donations to the COVID-19 response. They called it The Helping PAW campaign.Morin’s hope is that other companies that aren't struggling right now will see what they're doing and find their own ways to help.“I would say anyone that is doing well and making their way through it, try to help somebody else,” he said. 1830

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - Solana Beach is one of San Diego County's most expensive places to live, but it has no affordable housing. Now, the City Council may pursue turning a part of the City Hall parking lot into a 19-unit mixed-use affordable housing complex. The council could vote Wednesday to issue a request for proposals for development of the site, with the hopes of selecting a company to build it by September. City Hall, by the way, is across the street from steps that lead to its famous beaches. "It'd be like winning the lottery," said Christian McDonough, one of the hundreds of people who work in Solana Beach's tourist-facing businesses, but can't afford to live there. "If you're in the service industry, you're most likely not living in Solana Beach."This would be the city's second attempt to add affordable housing. In 2014, the council approved a 10-unit complex called The Pearl, down the block from City Hall. It is still awaiting financing after surviving a legal challenge, developer Ginger Hitzke said.Richard Earle, who rented a blufftop condo for more than a month, said he supports the idea of affordable housing, but said it wouldn't solve the larger problem."It's going to turn into a gong show for 5,000 applicants and we're going to say, here's the lucky 20," Earle said. Zillow reports that the average rent in Solana Beach is ,837 a month, up 4.7 percent from a year ago.    1459

ST. ANTHONY, Idaho — Lori Vallow Daybell faces additional charges in connection to the disappearance and death of her children.Vallow was charged late Monday with two counts of conspiracy to commit destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence. The new charges are felonies.According to East Idaho News, Vallow will make an initial court appearance on the new charges Tuesday afternoon at 4:30. Vallow and her attorney, Mark Means, will appear remotely from the Madison County Jail. The charges come after Rexburg police served a search warrant the home of her husband, Chad Daybell, in Salem, Idaho, on Monday. Officers went into the house, exterior buildings, and in the backyard with cameras. They left with brown evidence bags, but it is unknown if the search is tied to Vallow's new charges.Vallow was arrested in Hawaii in March in connection with her missing children, 17-year-old Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old Joshua "JJ" Vallow. She was extradited back to Idaho and charged with felony desertion and nonsupport of children along with three misdemeanors. She's remained in the Madison County Jail on a million bond.Vallow is expected to appear in court on July 9 and 10 if needed for a preliminary hearing. Judge Michelle Radford Mallard will appear over the case, scheduled to start at 9 a.m. local time both days.Police discovered JJ's and Tylee's remains in Daybell's backyard on June 9. Daybell was charged with two felony counts of destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence. This story was originally published by Katie Kloppenburg on KIVI in Boise, Idaho. 1588

SHERMAN HEIGHTS, Calif. (KGTV) - A storage facility for homeless people to keep their belongings is at capacity, leading some people to call for expansion. The facility is in Sherman Heights, near 20th Street and Commercial. It opened in June of 2018 with room for 500 bins.It was full by Halloween. Now there is a 200 person waiting list. The city initially wanted to put 1000 storage bins in the warehouse, but pushback from neighbors led to a compromise of just 500.Neighbors worried that the facility would be a magnet for homeless people, drawing them to the area.Six months later, people who spoke to 10News say the opposite has happened. They still see homeless people in the area, but not any more than before the facility opened. They also say the amount of clutter on the streets and sidewalks has decreased dramatically.Crime has also gone down in the area. According to the crimemapping.com website, there were 188 crimes reported within 1500 feet of the facility in August of 2018. In December, that number had dropped to 73 (see chart above).Part of that is from extra police patrol. A recent police department report says that SDPD is spending nearly million on overtime to add patrols in the neighborhood of the facility.City officials told the San Diego Union Tribune they have no plans to expand the facility. But at a meeting last month at the University of San Diego, several homeless advocated said it's an idea worth looking into. 1460
