SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Smugglers from Mexico have reportedly been able to breach recently constructed sections of the border wall, according to a report from The Washington Post. Smugglers breached the wall's bollard steel and concrete sections using reciprocating saws, allowing drugs and people to pass through from Mexico, the Post reported, citing U.S. agents and officials. The exact locations of the damaged wall were not indicated.10News reached out to U.S. Customs and Border Protection Saturday. While no one was available to speak, the CBP said in an email, "the bollard walls were not designed to be impenetrable or indestructible."RELATED: Border officials say the wall is working, drug smuggling shifting to the seaThis contrasts President Donald Trump's claims during a visit to San Diego in September, in which he claimed the bollard walls were "virtually impenetrable." The President went on to say at the time, "if you think you're going to cut it with a blow torch, that doesn't work because you hit concrete. And then if you think you're going to go through the concrete that doesn't work because we have very powerful rebar inside."The new 14-mile stretch of bollard fencing was completed in August, running from Otay Mountain to San Diego's coastline. CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan also said this week that border apprehensions were up 88% from Oct. 1, 2018, to Sept. 30, 2019.An administration official told the Post that the number of these breaches have totaled "a few instances," and echoed border agents' sentiments that the wall "significantly increased security and deterrence" in the San Diego and El Centro areas.The Washington Post reports that smugglers have cut through areas, then replaced the bollard in its original position or used putty to make it appear fixed in order to continue using the opening.RELATED: US border agents dealing with rise of 'fake families'Though agents can repair the damage by welding the bollard wall, they say smugglers can return to the same spot because the metal and concrete are now weakened, the Post said.The Post says that some of the damage has occurred in areas where electronic sensors to detect sawing vibrations have yet to be installed.Makeshift ladders have also been used to climb the barrier into the San Diego area, using hooks and rope ladders to climb down on the U.S. side of the border, the Post adds. 2675

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s rainy winter led to a bug-infested spring which is, in turn, giving away to a spider-filled summer. County of San Diego officials say 2019 could bring a “bumper crop” of orb weaver spiders due to an increase of its food supply. “So, you’re probably going to be running into a lot of spider webs very soon, if you haven’t already,” said County supervising vector ecologist Chris Conlan. Conlan has a term for what happens after a person walks into a web: the crazy spider dance. Orb weaver spiders, which include any spider that weaves a web, are usually not harmful to people, according to Conlan. They generally don’t bite unless they’re threatened. “A well-fed female can be a pretty imposing spider,” Conlan said to County News Center. “But they’re generally nothing to be worried about. In all honesty, if you run into their web, their general reaction is to bail off quick. They don’t like to hang around once something that’s big enough to smash through their web hits it. They know it’s not anything they want to tackle and wrap up to eat.” Conlan recommends avoiding walking through areas spiders can use as anchor points. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some former students of Brightwood College finally have something to celebrate after their school shut down earlier this month.Town & Country San Diego Mission Valley, where the graduation was scheduled to held, will now host the ceremony free of charge.Karlene Carpenter is one of those students looking forward to the graduation ceremony. She spent countless hours with her classmates, studying and preparing for the next phase of their lives. "The curiculum was amazing. This happened a few days before Carpenter was scheduled to finish the program. Teachers stepped in to help. Carpenter said some clinical instructors worked for free to help them finish. At first, it looked like the graduation ceremony scheduled for January 18th at Town & Country San Diego in Mission Valley was not going to happen since the school was out of business."We still had the date booked, but there was no way to pay for it," Carpenter said. "I went to school a little later in life. You want to walk across that stage, you want to wear your cap and gown, you want to participate in the pinning ceremony inducting you into nursing."Then came a little holiday cheer thanks to Santa's helpers, in the form of Town & Country staff. "We have extended to them a complimentary graduation. Everyone in their families can see them and just really enjoy what they worked so hard for," said Susan Penman, director of sales and marketing at the facility. From stressful classes to a sudden college shutdown, it was the news Carpenter was more than happy to hear. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Pride announced Thursday they will not allow law enforcement agencies to have a contingent in the Pride Parade or a booth at the Pride Festival as a show of support for the black LGBTQ community and until policing changes are made.San Diego Pride's statement comes amid a major push for police reform and defunding across the nation in the wake of the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day.In a letter to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Pride officials asked that he and the City of San Diego “stand with us in support of our Black LGBTQ and ally communities.”Pride San Diego Executive Director Fernando Lopez told 10News, “It can be traumatizing for folks to see people with guns and Tasers and batons march down a parade.”He added, “Now someone who’s black can’t take off their skin. A law enforcement officer can take off their uniform. They are a whole human being. If they want to take off their uniform and march with a peace flag or Latin X community … if the police chief wants to not wear his uniform next to me next year, I’d be happy to have him walk next to me next year.”Pride officials laid out a 4-step action plan which they hope the mayor and city will support:STEP 1: Law enforcement agencies will no longer have contingents in the San Diego Pride Parade or booths in our Pride Festival. This may be reassessed after the completion of Step 4.For Step 1, Pride officials added: "Everyone is still welcome to march, volunteer, and enjoy at Pride. But rather than siphoning money out of the LGBTQ community, allow us to retain those funds and invest them in the black LGBTQ community directly,” Lopez said.STEP 3: The City of San Diego will immediately adopt the #8CantWait Campaign recommendations.Pride officials are asking that the remaining items in the #8CANTWAIT campaign: Ban chokeholds and strangleholds, require deescalation, duty to intervene, ban shooting at moving vehicles, and require all force be reported. The other three items that are part of the campaign -- require warning before shooting, exhaust all alternatives before shooting, and establish use of force continuum -- are policies in place in the City of San Diego, according to Campaign Zero.STEP 4: Support a phased approach to policy reform recommendations centering Black LGBTQ San Diegans.According to officials, “San Diego Pride will host a series of intentional conversations centering Black LGBTQ voices to identify tangible reform, accountability, and transparency goals for law enforcement agencies. These phased conversations will include LGBTQ organization leaders, elected officials and community members. We will work as an organization and in coalition to realize these goals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students at Gompers Preparatory Academy were evacuated following a threat the school said it received Monday. San Diego Police say they received a call around 3:50 p.m. after someone reportedly left a voicemail on an administrative line at the school, making a vague bomb threat. A staff member at the school pulled a fire alarm, initiating the evacuation. "GPA received a telephonic threat after school today and the campus has been evacuated," the school said in an Instagram post. According to authorities, the students were evacuated to a nearby park. Roughly 80 students were still on campus along with 30 to 35 staff members. Police arrived and used a K9 to comb through the school, but found no trace of a bomb. An investigation is underway to determine who left the voicemail. Today was the first day students returned to class at the academy.
