BELLEVILLE, Mich. — A Good Samaritan was placed in a bad situation on a metro Detroit highway. Now his close call is going viral on social media while also alerting motorists to beware and trust your instincts. It was around 10 p.m. on Sunday when John Hadyniak of Belleville, Michigan  was heading home driving down I-94. When he got near Belleville road, he saw a woman on the side of the road changing a flat tire. Hadyniak's first thought was to stop and give her a hand, then his red flag radar lit up like the Fourth of July. The trunk on the car was closed, said Hadyniak, who is also a mechanic, and he noticed there was no plate on the trunk of the car. "I noticed that there was no jack and she had a tire iron in her hand," Hadyniak said. "Things didn't add up. It was just a bad feeling."He listened to that gut feeling and pulled out a flashlight and shined it on the woman. "I put the flashlight on her when I got out of the car," he said. "And about 15 feet off the side of the road there was a guy laying in the grass. I hit him with the light. He got up and jumped in the car and took off down I-94"In that moment, Hadyniak thought of what could have transpired. Those "what ifs" are still swirling around in his head. "Worse case scenario, I could have got bopped in the head with that, laid dead on the side of the expressway," he said. "(They could have) robbed me, stole my car – everything. If I wouldn't have seen him, it would have been bad news."Hadyniak posted the phonies foiled plan on Facebook with a warning to folks to be smart and beware. He also contacted the cops and gave them a description of the car – a silver Nissan Sentra.  1736

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. -- A Brooksville, Florida elementary school gave all of its teachers pink slips on Friday, the school district said it's an effort to make the school better."It should’ve came from the school. Not have to hear the news through Facebook," said father Andrew Beck. Facebook is how he found out that all the teachers at his children’s school were given pink slips. The school, Moton Elementary, which is a "Double D" school and the lowest performing school in Hernando County.During a faculty meeting on Friday teachers were notified they would be done working at Moton after the school year. Tenured teachers are to be reassigned.The district says they made the announcement before the end of the school year to give non-tenured teachers time to look for other jobs.  "To see what many of them are going through right now, its heartbreaking," said Megan Oates, a former Moton teacher. Megan Oates and Bridie Jones both taught at Moton for more than 10 years before quitting last year."I no longer felt like I had the support that I needed to do my job," said Jones. Bridie Jones owns Lake Lindsey Mall and Deli where both teachers now work.They say they’re much happier without the stress and pressure they faced from the constant critiquing of teaching at Moton."It was a lot of stress. Every day you had a different administrator walk into your room. They were looking for a reason that Moton was a "D" school and they came in and picked us apart every single day," said Jones.But they say it isn’t the teacher’s fault. Jones says Moton needed help and more staff but the school district didn’t listen."As a teacher you're told, you don’t punish the whole class if something’s not working because it’s not fair to the ones who weren’t a part of that," said Oates.    The school district sent a letter home to parents on Monday explaining that the decision was made because the school was facing closure or state takeover. The letter states in short:“With a fresh cadre of teachers coming on board, Moton is positioned to return to a high performing school.”As for parents, they say they're concerned about the decision and just want what is best for their kids."I think it's bad for their education. BONITA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Raad and Nisreen Stephan have owned Giant Pizza King in Bonita for 22 years.Nisreen Stephan said their store is their livelihood and only source of income."We are here seven days a week," Nisreen Stephan said. Their kids, now grown, also used to help out in the store.They say they are being forced out because of a dispute with their landlord. A drive-thru Starbucks is planned to replace their store, according to the Stephans."It is very stressful. Imagine that you are here for 22 years... and all of a sudden, they want to kick you out of your place," Raad Stephan said.He said the owners of the Bonnie Brae Center want them out to make room for the new Starbucks. The current Starbucks location is already in the same plaza at the corner of Central and Bonita Road."It is nonsense because Starbucks now, their location is the best in the shopping center," Raad Stephan said.The dispute will now play out in court. In the unlawful detainer lawsuit filed by Alcott Estates, L.P., it states that the lease expired in June 2016. Raad Stephan said he signed a lease that gave him the option of a five-year extension and the shopping center owners are not honoring that. There is no set court date to the lawsuit, but some of the loyal customers have told the owners that when there is, they will show up to the hearing.In the meantime, the couple is doing what they can to stay positive, thankful for their customers who have supported them throughout the years."We are a part of a family, a big family in Bonita. A family that likes to eat pizza, good pizza!" BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore on Wednesday filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration alleging that "unlawful" efforts altering a State Department policy are restricting visa applicants and deterring law-abiding immigrants from claiming public assistance.In its lawsuit, Baltimore asserts the U.S. State Department earlier this year quietly expanded its definition of "public charge" — someone the United States deems likely to be primarily dependent on government aid. It says the change is not only frightening legally entitled immigrants from applying for public programs but impeding otherwise eligible immigrants from entering the country in the first place.The lawsuit says the changes allow consular officers to consider whether green card applicants or their relatives, including U.S. citizens, ever benefited from non-cash benefits such as housing vouchers, subsidized school lunches or free vaccinations. Federal law has long required those seeking green cards to prove they won't be a burden — or a "public charge" — but new rules detail a broad range of public programs that could disqualify them.Maryland's biggest city asserts that immigrants are already fearful of using government programs that they or their families need. It notes that African immigrants' participation in the federal Head Start program has "virtually ceased" in Baltimore so far this school year.Mayor Catherine Pugh said her city is "known for embracing immigrants" and said the Trump administration's creation of "additional obstacles to those seeking to live in Baltimore" is un-American and a perversion of national ideals."We are determined to resist this latest attempt to deprive our immigrant communities of basic services," Pugh said in Baltimore, which is among the U.S. cities that have been trying to reverse population loss with various immigrant-friendly measures.The State Department did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment about Baltimore's lawsuit, which calls for the policy change to be declared unconstitutional and for the public charge provision to return to the old definition.Baltimore's lawsuit, filed in Maryland's U.S. District Court, was done in collaboration with the Democracy Forward Foundation, a group with Democratic party ties.Anne Harkavy, the Washington-based organization's director, portrays the State Department's public charge policy as "yet another example of the Trump administration's disturbing hostility toward people born in other countries and their families."Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security wants to redefine a "public charge" as someone who is likely to receive public benefits at any time. And the definition has been broadened to include SNAP or food assistance, Medicaid, housing assistance or subsidies for Medicare Part D. BOULEVARD, Calif. -- Crews are investigating what caused a fire to erupt at a school in Boulevard Monday afternoon.The fire happened at Clover Flat Elementary School in boulevard around 3 p.m., according to Cal Fire. It took firefighters less than an hour to extinguish the flames. The fire completely destroyed the classroom. The fire damaged several outbuildings on campus. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Cal Fire said. 449
