ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV)- While many business owners were forced to make the painful decision to shut down during the pandemic, some still took the risk of opening for the first time.Samantha and Weston Nawrocki weren’t going to let the COVID-19 pandemic stop their goal of opening a new café locally.“For coffee, the great thing is most people treat it even non-pandemic as a to go item,” said Weston Nawrocki.The couple has a coffee shop and roasting location in Rancho Bernardo, but their new business is up and running in their own city, Escondido, just six blocks away from their home.Manzanita Roasting Company opened Friday inside The Grand, which is home to the historic Ritz Theater, now newly renovated.“I’ve been a resident since I was a kid,” said Samantha Nawrocki. “I always drove by and said ‘I wish something would go in there’ and now we’re in there.”The City of Escondido shut down a couple of lanes on Grand Avenue and helped businesses transition to provide outdoor services under the current COVID-19 restrictions.Now, more new businesses are opening on busy Grand Avenue.“We have Daydream, which is a lovely gift store, we also have Off The Grid Surplus, let’s say you’re an off-road enthusiast of the jeep crowd, that’s definitely going to be your place,” said Amber Tarrac, the Deputy Director of Economic Development for the City of Escondido. “We also have Good Omen Mead, a meadery which is amazing stuff to try.”Tony Pepperoni Pizzeria and Barrel republic are currently still under construction, but Tarrac said they should be opening on Grand Avenue sometime soon, although a specific date is not clear.“We’re really excited about them, they’ve been under construction for a while,” she said.Tarrac said it’s not just Grand Avenue doing well with new businesses; from March 1st through November 23rd, Tarrac said hundreds of new businesses opened across the city.“We’ve had 696 new businesses; these are new permanent, in city businesses,” she said. “The bulk of those businesses are actually home occupations, so we’ve had quite a few folks that have decided to become entrepreneurs and start different businesses out of their home. We also had a number of retailers and restaurants open up.”The Nawrocki’s say they were able to hire ten new employees right before the holidays. For them, it’s the positivity, help from the city, outpouring of local support, and the love of coffee that’s gotten them through this year.“I feel like there’s more people kind of walking around and excited to support small business,” said Samantha Nawrocki. “We come down here to grand avenue and support local businesses, so it’s really great to be a part of that.”Businesses in historic downtown Escondido will be participating in Small Business Saturday on the 28th, in an effort to get more people to shop local.Discounts and bonuses may be offered at some locations.The City of Escondido is helping small businesses with outdoor moves; to find out more, click here.Complimentary fencing is also available for businesses that want to move services outdoors. ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - Employees of an Escondido golf course are frustrated and at their breaking point after their boss missed August 3rd's paycheck.UPDATE: Business owner paid employees missed and upcoming paycheck.Employes of the?Castle Creek Golf Course & Country Club said they heard their boss had a stroke on the first of the month and that was what caused the pay to be late. Employees were too afraid to speak on camera but said it wasn't the first time payment has been delayed.Golfers also said they've seen the course deteriorate since Osama Alkasabi took ownership in October.An employee said several people have already quit and some have their final day on the job this week.Alkasabi also owns two OAAI gas stations. Employees there vehemently defended Alkasabi but confirmed they hadn't been paid either. Employees there said Alkasabi had heart surgery."They missed only one, and that wasn't intentional," Alkasabi said over the phone. He blamed the delay on a car accident. "My car landed over the curb, and I arrived at the hospital here and had head surgery to make sure there is no bleeding, no fracture or damage," he said that happened August 1 off SR-78 near the Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.10News spoke with Oceanside Police and California Highway Patrol and neither have records of a crash in that area for the entire week.Alkasabi's gas stations are running out of gas. The pumps at Ninth Avenue and Centre City Parkway only had one kind of gas for sale.At the station off Midway Drive and Valley Parkway, the pumps were draped with caution tape.Alkasabi blames the prior owners."They did not renew or apply for the licensing permit from the APCD," he said.The Air Pollution Control District requires gas stations to maintain permits to operate. The permits must be renewed annually, and employees say Alkasabi has owned the stations for at least four years.Alkasabi made this promise to all his employees, "receive the check tomorrow by 1:15 p.m. for all three periods, although there is one period missing. So we're making a cushion for the next two weeks."He promised along with three paychecks, one for the missed cycle, one for this week and one in advanced, that he'll give each employee a 0 bonus.He also promised several improvements to the golf course and that gas will be available at his pumps soon. 2427

My first though was, which is crazy, is that it wasn't even me but what are my restaurants going to do because without them, there is no food tour," says Cristina McCarter, the owner of City Tasting Tours in Memphis, Tennessee.When the COVID-19 pandemic prompted shelter-in-place restrictions this spring, she made her business virtual, offering food delivery from local restaurants that were on her tasting tour. But when restaurants opened back up, she had to think of a new way to keep her business alive."I had to think of something else. So, I thought about, okay, maybe I could do a box and we can deliver some of the food items to people around town," says McCarter.That's when her friend, Lisa Brown, came in to help co-own and invest in their new business idea, City Tasting Box."We really just started to talk instantly about who are the vendors that we want to work with, who represents Memphis and we really just started to pull it off together. What is the experience we want it to be for the consumer?" says Lisa Brown.Brown and McCarter both wanted to create a product that not only showed off the best of Memphis but benefited local restaurants and food artisans. They've now launched two boxes.The first is the "Official Memphis Travel Box" and the second is the "Support Local Box." As for what's in the box? McCarter says, "There's Makeda's cookies in there and we always say you cannot visit Memphis and not have Makeda's cookies. That means you didn't do Memphis right if you didn't get your barbecue and your hot wings."Giving locals and the entire country a taste of town in a convenient "to go" box is a concept shared by others around the country who've had to shut down or adjust their business during the pandemic.At Seattle's Pike Place Market, organizers offer the Pike Box, which includes farmer's market produce delivered to your door without having to visit the market in person. Keeping safe, physical distances but still supporting local businesses, McCarter and Brown said the pandemic and their new business has taught them that they're stronger together, especially when showing off their Memphis pride."We want to push Memphis out to the whole nation and all of the good parts of what makes us who we are," says Brown.Already, the boxes are gaining traction.“It’s been going great. [We've had] really good response so far, mostly from out-of-towners,” McCarter said. “We've gotten a lot of messages from people saying, 'Oh this is such a great idea, we miss Memphis and didn't get a chance to come this year' or, 'We love Memphis and our daughter lives there.'"The two hope to expand their business later this year with specialty Christmas-themed boxes and food boxes featuring foods from other major cities, as well. 3001

FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) — A Fallbrook woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash late Friday.The 56-year-old Fallbrook resident was walking on East Alvarado St. near Alvarado Ct. just before 9 p.m. when she was hit by a vehicle in the eastbound lane, according to California Highway Patrol.She was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not been released and it's not clear why the woman was in the street.The vehicle that hit the woman fled the area heading eastbound.
