Marie, Mich. — The wordsmiths at Lake Superior State University in Michigan have released LSSU's 44th annual "List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness." LSSU's word banishment tradition is now in its fifth decade, and was started by the late W. T. Six people are dead after two floatplanes carrying cruise ship passengers collided in flight near Ketchikan, Alaska, on Monday, the US Coast Guard said.The Alaska State Troopers identified the deceased passengers as Simon Bodie, 56, of Tempe, New South Wales, Australia; Cassandra Webb, 62, of St. Louis, Missouri; Ryan Wilk, 39, of Utah; Louis Botha, 46, of San Diego, California; and Elsa Wilk, 37, of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. Randy Sullivan, a 46-year-old pilot from Ketchikan also died.The Coast Guard, which is leading the investigation, said 10 people were rescued following the collision between a Beaver floatplane and an Otter floatplane.The Coast Guard had initially announced the death of four people on Monday, as authorities searched for two others who were missing.The bodies of the missing individuals were located Tuesday night, raising the death toll to six, the Coast Guard said.Floatplanes are aircrafts with pontoons or floats that allow them to land on water.The passengers on both planes were guests on a Princess Cruises ship -- the Royal Princess -- which is on a seven-day trip. There were 14 Americans, one Canadian and one Australian on board the two planes, according to the Coast Guard.The Royal Princess' voyage originated in Vancouver, British Columbia, over the weekend and is scheduled to end Saturday in Anchorage, Alaska, the company said. The Otter plane, operated by Taquan Air, a regional airline based in Ketchikan, was flying a shore excursion with 10 passengers and a pilot aboard. One of those passengers died, Princess Cruises said.Ten people from the aircraft were transported to the hospital. As of Tuesday night, three had been discharged. "This is not the outcome we hoped for and extend our deepest sympathies during this very difficult time."Taquan Air released a statement saying it was "in the midst of an active crisis response, and our focus is on assisting these passengers, the pilot, our staff, their families and loved ones, and first responders.""Taquan Air has suspended all scheduled flights and is cooperating fully with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other authorities to examine every aspect of this event," the company's statement said.No flight data recorders on either aircraftA 14-member NTSB team of investigators will try to determine what caused the crash, Homendy said during a news conference Tuesday.Eleven of them were on the scene Tuesday night with the other three on the way.Investigators will want to talk with surviving passengers, the pilot of the Taquan airplane, other employees of the air operators as well as other pilots and witnesses that were in the area at the time, Homendy said.They will also be requesting information from parties involved and looking at pilot log books, the training and qualifications of the pilots, any possible medical issues, whether flight plans were filed with the companies or FAA, maintenance records for the aircrafts as well as each company's operating procedures and whether those procedures were followed, she said.There were no cockpit voice recorders or flight data recorders on either of the two planes, Homendy also said during the news conference. Neither plane was required by regulation to have such recorders, she said.The two planes collided between 3,200 and 3,300 feet on the west side of George Inlet, according to Homendy.The wreckage is expected to be recovered Wednesday, Homendy said, and an NTSB structural expert will try to figure out how the two planes came together. 4617

Right now, The Gateway Foundation is developing the very first space hotel with artificial gravity. “So the Von Braun Space Station is going to be the first commercial space station with artificial gravity,” said Tim Alatorre, a senior design architect with the company. The Von Braun Rotating Space Station will basically be a space hotel for customers.“So, the station works like a bike tire, we’re going to have spokes coming out of the central hub. That’s where the spaceships will dock, zero gravity and then it rotates,” said Alatorre. “So, the rotation creates that artificial gravity on the perimeter – this is where people will be living on the outside edge.”Although artificial gravity sounds like something out of science fiction, Alatorre says the science is sound. Designers will be using technology from the International Space Station.“NASA built the space station with just a few tools, one of them is the mechanical arm that we often see in the videos,” said John Blinko, President of the Gateway Foundation. “It’s the arm that we want to adopt in our space construction and designs and schemes and so forth.”But all of this depends on Elon Musk and SpaceX’s launch system. “SpaceX is developing the Super Heavy and the Starship platform. Our projections are showing the price of tickets is going to get lower as time goes on. So for right now, it could be cost prohibitive for some, but in a few short years, it’s going to be a common thing people do. As soon as Starship is ready to launch and is orbital, we want to be one of the first customers to launch into orbit.”In 2025, Alatorre says people will be able to vacation to space. “So, the space station is going to be a big draw to people,” said Alatorre. “We’re going to have a hotel, restaurant, bar, gymnasium.”But it’s more than that. The foundation says it’s the first step to advancing beyond the atmosphere.“But big picture – we’re trying to build out a space industry,” said Alatorre. “We want to have multiple stations in space – space tourism going to the moon, going to Mars, going to other space stations. And just from a humanity standpoint, having hundreds of people being able to go up to space and look back on Earth and just know we are sharing this little blue marble. I think it’s going to have a profound impact on people.” 2522
