CLARENCE STRAIT, Alaska -- A deer is back on dry land, thanks to the U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska.A crew was patrolling the Clarence Strait, off Alaska’s southern coast, when they spotted a deer in the water.The animal was caught in a current and struggling in the 49 degree water.The Coast Guard crew slowed their boat and got close enough the deer could swim up to them. CINCINNATI — Double majoring in neuroscience and organizational leadership is more than enough to fill the plates of most people.However, University of Cincinnati senior Megdelawit Habteselassie also finds time to serve as student body president and as a member of the UC alumni council.Students have elected other women as student body presidents before Habteselassie, who goes by her family's generational nickname of Sinna. However, she is the first African-American woman to hold the position in UC's 199-year history."I wish it happened sooner," said Habteselassie, 22, from her office in the Steger Student Life Center.The Ohio native's parents emigrated to the United States from Ethiopia more than 20 years ago. She initially planned to go into medicine but decided her passion was in social justice."I want to go into international law and perhaps work for the Gates Foundation, which does phenomenal things for sustainable development," said Habteselassie.However, for now, she is focused on her duties as student body president, which were plenty during the run-up to the university's homecoming earlier this month.She credits a strong network of women, including several mentors, for encouraging her to run."It's good to know that I am in this role because a lot of women helped me be here, and I would certainly say that if those kinds of conversations had happened sooner there probably would've been the first black woman president a lot earlier," she said.Habteselassie said studies show that women need to be asked several times before they will consider running for elected office. That was indeed the case for her, she said, but students greeted her candidacy warmly once she committed to running."It's amazing to see so many people ready for that change on our campus and to welcome me into this leadership role," Habteselassie said .Student body vice president Umaize Savani believes Habteselassie is giving a voice to those whose voices are not heard as loudly as others."To me, it shows that a change is coming to UC and to this country. I also think this reflects the changes that have taken place at UC over the last four years," Savani said.Habteselassie and Savani campaigned on a platform centered around holistic health and specifically destigmatizing issues surrounding mental health."We're working on doing a 'love yourself' campaign on campus and raising money for a mental health advocate award, and we have our co-directors of mental health awareness, who are really striving to expand what it means to be healthy," Habteselassie said.Debra Merchant, vice president of student affairs, said she believes Habteselassie is making the most of every moment."Her leadership opens 'thought doors' for everyone," Merchant said. "I'm a big believer in 'You can't be what you can't see.' Sinna's engagement with students, faculty and staff sends the important message throughout our UC community that leadership is open to all."Habteselassie has a knack for connecting with all types of students, Savani said."She knows how to speak to the student that is struggling while also being able to see eye to eye with a football player," Savani said. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 21-year-old sailor died after falling from the USS Nimitz Friday night. According to U.S. Naval Air Forces, the sailor fell from one of the ship’s aircraft elevators. The USS Nimitz was in port at Naval Air Station North Island. The 21-year-old suffered serious injuries from the fall and died Saturday morning, according to the Navy. The name of the sailor hasn’t been released at this time and the nature of the accident is under investigation. A sailor from USS Nimitz passed away early this morning from injuries sustained in an accident aboard ship last night. The sailor fell from one of the ship’s aircraft elevators in a down position. CLEVELAND — Police in the Cleveland area now report a total of five Amazon delivery trucks have been stolen in northeast Ohio since Nov. 25, and with them, hundreds of packages. Investigators say in some cases the vehicles are taken by thieves as the Amazon driver leaves the running truck to make a delivery.Cleveland Heights Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg said that's exactly what happened on Dec. 13, after thieves stole an Amazon vehicle during a delivery."The driver was delivering a package, she had exited the truck and was putting it on the porch," Mecklenburg said. “A truck pulled up and one of the men got out and jumped in the Amazon truck and drove away. The truck had been left running with the keys in it. It is possible up to 200 packages, we believe, were in the truck at the time it was stolen. To me it’s just heartbreaking for all the people who had ordered. You know people were ordering online to be safe because they didn’t want to get sick, so many more people were ordering on-line and were looking forward to these packages and these gifts. It’s so close to Christmas, it really is sad, I feel horrible for the people who may not get these packages in time for the holidays.”Mecklenburg said the Amazon driver was not hurt, and said GPS tracking on-board the delivery truck helped speed-up the recovery effort.“Unfortunately, there were no cameras on the truck, and at this time we couldn’t find any cameras in the immediate area where the truck was stolen,” Mecklenburg said. “It’s my understanding that it’s their policy to leave them running when they exit it to deliver a package. We have heard that with some of these trucks, drivers are being robbed by people with guns.”News 5 contacted Amazon headquarters about the truck heists, and asked if these cases have the company considering delivery protocol changes, or adding truck surveillance cameras to assist police make arrests.
