BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- A new-generation short haul passenger aircraft solely developed in China has completed a successful trial flight, paving the way for commercial production next year, the manufacturer announced on Friday.     The Xinzhou-600, developed by Xi'an Aircraft Industry Company (XAC) of the China Aviation Industry Corporation I (AVIC I), flew on Thursday in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, said the AVIC I.     The turboprop aircraft was a new version of the Xinzhou-60 that can carry 50 to 60 passengers. The Xinzhou-600 had been updated with a more comfortable cabin and better designed body structure and maintenance system, said Geng Ruguang from the AVIC. A new-generation short haul passenger aircraft solely developed in China has completed a successful trial flight, paving the way for commercial production next year, the manufacturer announced on Friday    It was also designed for inter-island flights, which would helpit in the Southeast Asia and island nation markets, Geng said.     XAC took about three years to develop the Xinzhou-600, which would be delivered to clients from the second half of 2009, he said.     The company has orders for 136 Xinzhou-60s and has exported them to Zambia, the Republic of Congo, Laos, Zimbabwe and Bolivia since 2006.     This would give China the edge to compete in the global market for turboprop aircraft, where demand is expected to reach 1,900 in20 years.     Geng said the company had started to plan the development of the next generation aircraft, the Xinzhou-700.

NANNING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region became the 10th Chinese locality to have replaced gasoline and diesel oil with bio-ethanol fuel on Tuesday out of environmental and energy efficiency concerns.     Petrol stations in all the 14 cities of Guangxi began to sell bio-ethanol fuel on Tuesday and in two weeks, traditional petrol and diesel oil will be phased out, said Fu Jian, an official in charge of transport with the regional government.     Fu said about 350,000 motor vehicles and more than 3 million motorbikes will have their tanks cleaned up for the fuel change.     Presently nine other Chinese provinces are using ethanol fuel including Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces in the northeast, Henan and Hebei provinces in the north, Anhui, Shandongand Jiangsu provinces in the east and the central Hubei Province.     Guangxi is the first Chinese locality to commercially produce ethanol fuel with cassava instead of grain. The region produces 7.8 million tonnes of cassava a year, more than 60 percent of China's total.     It is home to China's first bio-ethanol fuel production base that went into operation in December in the coastal city of Beihai. The base is designed to produce 200,000 tonnes of biofuel annually out of about 1.5 million tonnes of cassava.     China banned the use of grain for ethanol production last year to ensure sufficient food supplies, and biofuel manufacturers havesince turned to sweet potatoes, sorghum and straw stalks instead.     Ethanol fuel is believed to help ease China's energy supply bottleneck. Customs statistics say China's net crude oil import climbed at least 12 percent year on year to reach 160 million tonnes in 2007, and the country's reliance on crude oil import is at least 46 percent.     It is also believed to help cut carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions, by around 30 percent and 10 percent respectively.     Chinese officials said the country's ethanol fuel sales will reach 30 million tonnes in 2010 to make up half of the total gasoline supplies.

BEIJING, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Higos, the 17th this year, will drop heavy rain on parts of south China's Guangdong and Hainan provinces over the next two days, the National Meteorological Observatory said on Thursday.     The office advised everyone in those regions to prepare for therain, as well as lightning storms and gale-force winds.     Tourists in coastal cities of the island province of Hainan, such as Sanya and Bo'ao, have been advised to avoid offshore activities over the next three days.     Higos was centered about 700 km southeast of Zhuhai, Guangdong,as of 5 p.m. on Thursday, and it was moving north-west at 20 km per hour. Tourists stay at the beach in Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province, on Oct. 2, 2008. Tropical storm Higos, the 17th this year, is moving towards south China's island province of Hainan, the provincial meteorological station said on Thursday, affecting the ongoing National Day holidays.    The storm is gaining momentum as it nears eastern Hainan and the mid-west regions of Guangdong, according to the national observatory.     Higos, which formed on Tuesday in the Pacific Ocean, comes on the heels of storms Jangmi and Hagupit, which together killed some 20 people in China

BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Sunday urged Hainan Province, China's largest special economic zone (SEZ), to further carry out reform and opening up as it embraces its 20th anniversary.     The province should "beef up reforms and make efforts to achieve breakthroughs in key fields", said Li during his inspection tour to the island province from Thursday to Sunday.     He suggested that the province should build itself into a shipping hub and center of logistics and export-oriented processing facing southeast Asia. SANYA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete on Friday pledged to make concerted effort to promote the traditional friendship and practical cooperation between the two countries.     China sees Tanzania as its all-weather cooperative partner and the healthy development of bilateral relations could be treated as a model for China's sincerity and cooperation with Africa and all developing countries, Hu told Kikwete during their talks in this southern China seaside city.     To further the bilateral all-round cooperation, Hu proposed the two countries strengthen political trust, keep high-level contacts and dialogues in various forms, expand mutually beneficial trade cooperation, facilitate exchanges in the areas of education, culture, sports, public health, tourism and media, and encourage contacts among local governments, social organizations, women and youth of the two countries. The relay will be held the next day before the Olympic Torch continues its global tour to Muscat of Oman.     Kikwete said the people of Tanzania and all other African countries are firmly against the attempt of some people to disrupt the Beijing Olympic Games, resolutely support the efforts of the Chinese government and people, and believe the Beijing Olympic Games will be a complete success.     Hu thanked Kikwete for this and said the China-Africa new strategic partnership marks a new development stage of China-Africa cooperation.
