Tropical Storm Michael formed near the Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday, and it's on track to wallop the United States."The current forecast indicates the storm entering the Gulf of Mexico by Monday morning, strengthening to a hurricane by early Wednesday and likely targeting the Florida panhandle by late Wednesday," CNN meteorologist Gene Norman said.As of 4 p.m. Sunday, Tropical Storm Michael was centered about 130 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said.But it's so big, people 200 miles away from the center are getting hit with tropical-storm-force winds (which have increased to at least 50 mph)."Strengthening is forecast during the next several days," the hurricane center said.Track the stormBefore Michael hits the United States, it's expected to dump 3 to 7 inches of rain on western Cuba."Isolated maximum amounts of 12 inches are possible in western Cuba," the hurricane center said. "This rainfall could lead to life-threatening flash floods and mudslides in areas of mountainous terrain."Michael's path to the Gulf is also affecting politics in Florida.Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum was scheduled to campaign in South Florida on Monday and Tuesday, but said he is suspending his campaign activity to address preparations for the storm, his campaign said. The storm is forecast to land a direct hit on Tallahassee, where Gillum is mayor.Gov. Rick Scott, the Republican nominee for US Senate, at this point has yet to adjust his campaign schedule but his campaign says they are re-evaluating the situation. Two journalists from WYFF-TV based out of Greenville, South Carolina were killed Monday afternoon when a tree fell on their SUV while covering a storm that was causing flooding in the area, the station confirmed. WYFF anchor Mike McCormick and WYFF photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer were killed by the tree that landed on the SUV. The incident happened in Polk County, North Carolina. Tryon Fire Chief Geoffrey Tennant told WYFF that the SUV's engine was running when authorities reached the scene around 2:30 p.m. on Monday. The tree was reportedly 3 feet in diameter. Heavy rain in the area caused the roots of the tree to fail, Tennant told the station. "It personally affected me a little bit because I had done an interview with Mr. McCormick about 10 minutes before we got the call. And we had talked a little bit about how he wanted us to stay safe and I wanted him to stay safe and of course 10 or 15 minutes later we got the call and it was him and his photographer," Tennant said. "It's the first time I ever met either one of those two gentleman, but you feel a sense of responsibility to them."McCormick joined the station in 2007 as a reporter, and was promoted to anchor in 2014. Smeltzer joined the station in February.  1310

TULSA, Oklahoma -- The suspect in an Amber Alert and stabbing was seen smiling Tuesday afternoon after her arrest.Police in Tulsa, Oklahoma said 39-year-old Taheerah Ahmad stabbed her 11-year-old daughter on Monday night. The 11-year-old girl was taken to the hospital in "very" critical condition, where she remains unconscious.An Amber Alert was issued after police said Ahmad also abducted her eight-year-old child. Ahmad was located around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in a parking lot in Tulsa. The 8-year-old child was also found safe. Police said citizens walking in the area noticed the vehicle and contacted authorities. Ahmad was taken into custody without incident. Police said she had been in that parking area for 17 hours before being found. Police said the woman admitted to the crime. Ahmad said she became upset with her children, and bound two of her children's hands with duct tape. She said the 11-year-old child fought back, and she stabbed the child 50 to 60 times and hit her in the head with a pick ax, according to police. She was arrested on counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, first-degree arson and abuse of a child.  1209

Two gun shops in Southwest Florida are offering free gun training for teachers in response to the Parkland shooting.A free class at North Fort Myers Guns is designed to educate teachers about guns so they can protect themselves and others.A new state law allows schools districts the option to arm teachers under certain conditions.  They would be required to go through 144 hours of training and an evaluation process with law enforcement.Robert Lewis, the owner of North Fort Myers Guns, said the training he is offering will give teachers a jump start on how to use a gun.Lewis said it's a two-hour class where teachers can learn the basics and then they will go to a local gun range a few days later to practice firing a gun."My trainer takes you out to his private range in North Fort Myers. You will shoot any number of weapons you want. He makes it a true learning experience," Lewis said.The training is normally , but Lewis said he's offering it for free for teachers because he believes arming teachers will help protect kids in school.Two teachers have already signed up for Tuesday's training class. Lewis said depending on how many teachers sign up, he will hold a class at least once a month.Fowler Firearms in Ft. Myers, Florida is offering a similar service.After receiving a local donation, the manager John Dezendorf is offering the first five local certified teachers who sign up a brand new firearm and free platinum memberships.The membership includes free range time and gun rentals for a year.Dezendorf said whether the teachers are required to train through the state or county, his training services will give them the extra practice they need."The number one thing is to keep children safe and the only things to keep kids safe is to have people around them that are able to protect them.
