It’s harvest time for the wine industry on California’s Central Coast.At Wolff Vineyards in Edna Valley, owner Jean-Pierre Wolff is dealing with all kinds of issues.“Today in my vineyard, it’s over 100 degrees,” he said. “The impacts of the fires and the smoke taint really add another level of challenge.”These environmental challenges are now costing Wolff financially. Some customers canceled their orders because of concerns about nearby wildfires impacting his grapes.“Negative effects can manifest themselves later on after fermentation and during barrel aging,” Wolff said. “So, they basically backed out of agreements.”Millions of acres have recently burned across California, Oregon and Washington, areas that produce 85% of the country’s wine.“It’s the first time in recent history that fires have impacted so many different wine grape growing regions,” said Anita Oberholster, Ph.D. with the University of California, Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology.She says America’s wine tourism is already struggling due to COVID-19 and that these fires could cost the industry even more through job loss and damaged products.“The problem with this year is the fires started much earlier than our harvest season,” Oberholster said. “About 10% of the grapes have been harvested and the rest were still on the vine. 2020 is not our year.”For many wineries, smoke taint of grapes is so severe, there might not be a 2020 vintage.“The 2020 vintage is going to be one where we’ll have a limited amount of high-quality wines,” Wolff said.While Wolff is working to keep his products from going down the drain and letting his wine go to waste, he says many in the industry are dealing with fire fatigue and that an increase in cost linked to these fires could be felt in years to come.“2023 probably particularly with reds is when impacts will be felt,” he said. “We’ll bounce back, but we’ll be a little black and blue.” 1930

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man carrying an AR-15 at the sister version of the national gun violence rally in downtown Indianapolis on Saturday drew quite the attention from the crowd. The man was walking around outside the Indiana Statehouse during the Indianapolis "March for our Lives" march with the gun strapped to his back. Jami Stall said she respects the man's right to be at the rally but she found his attendance, carrying the firearm, to be alarming and in bad taste. READ | Hundreds attend March for our Lives rally at Indiana Statehouse"It was led by children and teens - I thought that was in bad form," said Stall. It kind of feels like a concert, but there’s no musical performance. It’s former First Lady Michelle Obama, having a conversation with tens of thousands of people during her “Becoming” tour stop in Denver.  “This has been an amazing day being here with all of you,” Obama says.  The event, however, was just one part of the time she spent in the community. Just hours earlier, Emma Jones and her mom were among the hundreds of patients and families who packed the lobby of Children’s Hospital Colorado for the surprise visit.After a warm welcome, Obama sat down with Santa to read a book and answer questions from her young audience members.  “Was there really a movie theater in the White House?” asked one child.  Other questions were more serious, including one that asked Obama what advice she’d give to her younger self.“Don't let fear stop you from doing things that will help you grow,” she replied.  “Just being at the hospital and like knowing that something is going on with you in the first place, it's kind of scary,” says patient Emma Jones. “But like just hearing that message from someone who cares a lot about everybody is just super empowering and like it was just really cool.”Following the hospital stop, Obama signed copies of her book at a local bookstore.   With eight tour stops so far, all of them include some form of giving back to young people. In Detroit, Obama surprised a group of college students, sitting in on a discussion on education. In Boston, she made a stop at a Boys and Girls Club, and in Los Angeles, she read books to preschoolers.  It's a reflection of what Obama says is closest to her heart.  “I love kids. It was just a few days before Thanksgiving, when an 8th grader was shot and killed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.Sandra Parks was sitting in her room watching TV, when a stray bullet came through the window.“She said, ‘Mama, call the police. I been shot,’” Sandra’s mother, Bernice, describes of that night. “She was laying on the floor. I thought she was playing, but I called the police anyway because I’m like that’s too many gunshots, what the hell is going on?”The 13-year-old’s award-winning essay is now being shared around the world and read on national news outlets. In the young girl’s essay, “Our Truth,” Sandra wrote about gun violence.Sandra’s words are now some of the only things her mom says she has left of her daughter.“I don’t have her flesh. I don’t have her smiling at me all the time. I don’t have what I want, and I want my baby,” Bernice says. “Ain’t nothing gonna make that better. It’s just that being in this house, since she been gone, it’s strange, scary, and it’s unacceptable.”Bernice says her daughter’s words are giving her strength as she prepares for the funeral. The mother hopes Sandra’s essay might prevent another family from going through the same pain.“The stuff that she wrote, people should listen to it. Heed to it. Follow it, because it’s only right that kids should live. Adults should live,” she says. “I don’t think nobody should die, not by the hands of body else for no apparent reason. She didn’t do nothing.”Police have arrested two suspects they believe were connected to the shooting.A public visitation for Sandra will be held Friday. 1596
