The website of the National Bureau of Corruption Prevention (NBCP) crashed on Tuesday, just hours after its launch, as droves of people logged on to complain about corruption among officials.The website (yfj.mos.gov.cn) was closed for most of the afternoon, Beijing Youth Daily reported.An NBCP official, who did not want to be named, confirmed the breakdown had occurred."Repairs were carried out soon after the website broke down and normal service has now been resumed, he told the Xinhua News Agency."The number of visitors was very large and beyond our expectations," he said.As of 4 pm yesterday, visitors had left 22 pages of messages in the website's guest book.While many of them referred to report specific cases of official corruption, these were redirected by the webmaster to other sites, such as that of the Ministry of Supervision.Other visitors made calls for the strengthening of the government's anti-corruption efforts, and comments about the need for special attention to be given to cases involving institutes of higher education and grassroots governments."The corruption problem in China is a fatal illness. Establishing more institutions will not solve the problem," one comment read.The enthusiasm that greeted the launch of the website reflects the growing frustration felt by the public toward corruption at government level, which has been accentuated by several high-profile cases in recent years.Several senior officials, including Qiu Xiaohua, the former director of the National Bureau of Statistics; Zheng Xiaoyu, the former head of the food and drug administration; and Chen Liangyu, the former Party head of Shanghai, have been found guilty of serious corruption.Last year, more than 90,000 officials were disciplined, according to official figures.The NBCP was set up on September 13, with Ma Wen, the Minister of Supervision, as its head.The bureau has been entrusted to collect and analyze information from the banking, land use, medicine and telecommunications sectors, among others, and to share it with prosecuting organs, courts and the police.It is not, however, involved in the investigation of individual cases.

Rural infrastructure and social services have improved remarkably in recent years, thanks to government efforts to boost the countryside, the nation's latest agriculture census has revealed.The National Bureau of Statistics yesterday released its first report based on the 2006 census, which is designed to reflect the overall development of rural areas and the agriculture sector, as well as the living standards of rural residents.The percentage of villages which had access to road links, telephone services, electricity and TV broadcasting by the end of 2006 were 95.5 percent, 97.6 percent, 98.7 percent and 97.6 percent, according to the survey.For every 100 households in rural areas, there were 87.3 television sets, 51.9 fixed-line telephones, 69.8 mobile phones, 2.2 computers, 38.2 motorbikes and 3.4 automobiles. Meanwhile, 74.3 percent of the villages had clinics; and at the township level, 98.8 percent of towns had hospitals, and 66.6 percent, nursing homes for the elderly."The figures show the government's increased spending to improve rural livelihoods has started to pay off," said Du Zhixiong, a researcher at the Rural Development Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).The central government has launched a slew of initiatives in the past few years to speed up the development of the countryside, which has lagged behind urban areas over the years.The aim is not only to bridge the income gap between urban and rural areas, but also improve the social services in the countryside. BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua)-- Personal computer giant Dell Inc. said Thursday that it will raise parts purchases from China by 27.8 percent this year, increasing its presence in the booming market.     Dell is to buy 23 billion U.S. dollars worth of computer components and other equipment from Chinese suppliers this year, compared with 18 billion U.S. dollars in 2007, said Michael Dell, chief executive officer of the PC giant, at a press conference.     However, Dell's Beijing representative office denied reports that the company was planning to buy 29 billion U.S. dollars of computer parts from China in 2009.     To secure a bigger share of the Chinese market, Dell broke with its Internet sales model and sealed a deal in September to sell PCs through the country's top electronics retailer, GOME Electrical Appliances.     Dell saw its PC shipments in China up 54 percent year-on-year in 2007.     The company plans to expand its retail outlets from 45 cities in 2007 to 1,200 by the end of the year.     China, where Dell ranks third in terms of market share, is one of the company's fastest growing markets, said Michael Dell.     Dell has two factories in Xiamen, a coastal city in southeastern Fujian Province, a design center in Shanghai and a customer contact center in Dalian, a northeast coastal city, with more than 6,000 employees in China.     Meanwhile, Dell estimates it will contribute more than 50 billion U.S. dollars to China's gross domestic product (GDP) this year, and provide about 2 million jobs.     Dell also said it would donate 1.7 million yuan (239,436 U.S. dollars) to build six education centers in China to teach computer skills to migrant workers' children.
