SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The landlord at a Rolando apartment complex filed a police report Thursday, concerned an San Diego Gas and Electric employee going door to door at the building was an impostor. A mother at home with her young children got a notice that her bill was overdue and SDG&E planned to shut off the power if she didn't pay, according to Jon, the complex landlord.Residents believed the man, who was wearing a uniform and driving an SDG&E vehicle, did not actually work for the company.None of the tenants gave the man any money, Jon said.SDG&E has information on its website to help customers identify employees: 643

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Barrio Logan College Institute is moving into a newer, bigger location, thanks to the generosity of an area businessman.Nicholas Aguilera, who's father started Diego and Son Printing in 1972, is letting the BLCI lease the company's old building for 20 years, with an option to buy."I think it's awesome, it's fantastic," Aguilera says. "I think my dad would be very, very happy and proud."Aguilera says his father always wanted the business to be part of the community. Turning it's original location into an educational site fits with Diego's vision and passion for improving the Barrio."I see a future for our students," says BLCI Interim CEO Barbara Ybarra. The Institute works with kids from the 3rd grade through high school. It helps mentor them as they try to become the first person in their family to go to college. Ybarra says 100% of the students that complete the program go to college. The new building will allow the BLCI to serve even more students."These upgrades are going to help them compete technologically with the other students they're competing against to get into college," says Ybarra. She also says there's symmetry in taking over the old printing building."Diego used to print notebooks and pads of paper for the students to use and take to school," she says. "I see it coming full circle. It's a great legacy for their family."The BLCI is trying to raise .5 million to buy the building. So far they've been able to secure .1 million in donations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The FDA Wednesday gave emergency approval to a San Diego company's test for COVID-19 antibodies.Easy Check, from Truvian Sciences, can test for COVID-19 antibodies in under 10 minutes."They've now given us the right to market the product and sell the product as a safe and effective solution for this type of testing," said Truvian President and CEO Jeff Hawkins. The test uses a drop of blood on a testing strip. Within 10 minutes, it shows a marking on the strip that indicates if you have the antibodies or not.Hawkins said these kinds of tests are vital to the future of the coronavirus pandemic."This type of testing, today, is helping us understand how many people had an infection," said Hawkins. "Over time, this type of testing may help us understand how long that vaccine is good for and how long you are protected. He added, "Using these very deployable, simple tests to monitor this is one way we can track people over time and see how this evolves."The Easy Check test went through independent testing by four separate laboratories. They found it is 99% accurate in detecting both the presence of the COVID-19 antibody and identifying it among other antibodies.Right now, the test requires a full blood draw, but Truvian is working on a version of the test that only needs a finger prick.Hawkins said his company will sell it to medical labs and offices for per test, keeping it affordable for patients who want to take the test, although individual tests may cost more to help doctors and labs cover their costs."Our core mission as a company before COVID was to make testing more accessible and make testing less expensive," said Hawkins. "So this just fit with what we do and it was really about just picking the right technology."Click here to learn more about Truvian's Easy Check test. 1834

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The family of 19-year-old Dylan Hernandez, the San Diego State University (SDSU) freshman who died after falling off a bunk bed last November, say they are concerned about the investigation conducted by Campus Police and the University. The family believes the University Police Department is not pursuing certain angles, including a possible cover-up.Last November, Dylan Hernandez died after attending a Phi Gamma Delta fraternity party. In police reports obtained by the San Diego Union-Tribune, the freshman made it back to his dorm room around midnight. On the morning of Nov. 7, 2019, he fell off the top bunk bed and hit his head. An autopsy concluded that Hernandez had fractured his skull, suffering from a brain bleed that ultimately led to his accidental death. Reports also state that his blood-alcohol level was about 0.23, nearly three times the legal limit. RELATED: San Diego State suspends 14 fraternities after student is hospitalizedIn a newly released statement to 10News, the Florida native's family said they are disturbed at how poorly Campus Police and San Diego State are handling the investigation. "The Hernandez family is concerned because witnesses they provided to SDSU and UPD still have not been questioned," George Kindley, Hernandez family lawyer, said. The same University Police reports state that UPD never interviewed anybody from the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. They also never sought out search warrants for Snapchat videos or phone records, despite knowing that some fraternity brothers instructed others to delete possibly incriminating videos and messages. According to the report, one of those messages read, "Remember, silence is golden."This was a shocking revelation to the family. In a statement to 10News, the Hernandez family said, they hope:RELATED: Cause determined after San Diego State University student dies"SDSU and UPD will quickly live up to their promises and complete the investigation without further delay. The Hernandez family wants SDSU and UPD to take action now to prevent future tragedies like this one from occurring." (George Kindley, Hernandez family lawyer)Sunday, UPD responded to a 10News inquiry regarding the Hernandez family. They said:"The preliminary, incomplete police report was provided to a representative of the Hernandez family in an effort to be as supportive and transparent with the family as possible during a difficult time for them as they are mourning the tragic loss of their loved one. Details of the incomplete report, released late last year, was not meant to be shared with the public as it compromises our ongoing investigation and can hinder witnesses from sharing information. "The Hernandez family also told 10News they are questioning the SDSU's bunk bed safety enforcement. They said:RELATED: SDSU launches two task forces in wake of student's death"SDSU needs to provide all students in school issued bunk beds with a safety rail that actually meets minimum safety standards, not a pseudo safety rail that SDSU knows failed and caused other students injuries in the past." (George Kindley, Hernandez family lawyer)In response, SDSU said in the last five years, they have only had two known incidents regarding bunk beds. However, they did not reveal specifics. They said: "All lofted beds and bunk beds located within SDSU residence halls are produced by national manufacturers and meet California State Fire Marshal requirements. Colleges and universities are not required to follow U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines defining requirements for childrens' beds." (Cory Marshall, San Diego State University)The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines state the height from the railing from the top of the mattress must be no lower than five inches. College dorms, jails and military barracks are not held to the same standards. 3885

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Navy has called off search and rescue efforts to find a Sailor from the USS Theodore Roosevelt who reportedly went overboard.Navy crews from the San Diego-based carrier and five other vessels ended the search at sunset on Saturday. Crews and the U.S. Coast Guard searched more than 607 square nautical miles for more than 55 hours off the coast of Southern California.Ships began rescue efforts after a lookout spotted what they believed to be a person in the water at about 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, according to the Navy.RELATED: San Diego-based USS Theodore Roosevelt searching for Sailor overboardThe Navy ad the Sailor's family identified him as 20-year-old Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Apprentice Ethan Garrett Goolsby of Texas.Goolsby reported to the USS Theodore Roosevelt in July after his initial training as an aviation ordnanceman in Pensacola, Fla. He was promoted to his current rank on Sept. 16. "The loss of our Sailor is felt deeply by all on board," said Capt. Eric Anduze, commanding officer of Theodore Roosevelt. I offer my thanks to all the Sailors and Coast Guardsmen who were involved in the search."The USS Theodore Roosevelt departed San Diego several days ago for an exercise at sea ahead of its second deployment of the year, according to USNI News.
