BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A public supervision scheme for China's prosecutors will be rolled out nationwide next month, a senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader said Tuesday.A pilot public supervisor scheme, which started six years ago, had proved effective in supervising judicial departments, said Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, at a meeting in Beijing.From next month, the measure would be formally adopted nationwide, he said.More work should be done to improve the selection and management of public supervisors and to draft regulations, he said.Government departments, non-governmental organizations, state-owned enterprises and communities could nominate members of the public as supervisors to the procuratorates.The public supervisors would give opinions to procuratorates when prosecutors decided to drop corruption charges, or when a suspect in the corruption case complained about the arrest.They could also oversee the actions of prosecutors, to prevent illegal detentions, obtaining confessions through violence and torture, and illegal collection of evidence.A report by the Supreme People's Procuratorate to the National People's Congress in March 2008 said about 86 percent of procuratorates had taken part in the trial.At the meeting, Zhou admitted that the country still faced a tough task in judicial reform.The government would work out new policies to attract more prosecutors and judges to work in local judicial departments, he said.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- China and the European Union (EU) are forging a reliable partnership as one's stability, growth and prosperity are in the interests of the other, said an EU envoy on Thursday.Serge Abou, EU Ambassador to China, made the remarks before Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attends the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM8) and the 13th China-EU summit from Oct. 4 to 6. The ASEM summit, under the theme "Quality of Life: Achieving Greater Well-being and More Dignity for all Citizens," will focus on global finance and economic governance, sustainable development, and social and cultural exchange between Asia and Europe.China, as the second largest economy in the world, plays an important role in the meetings, Abou said, adding that the growth of Chinese economy contributed much to the world, especially amid the financial crisis.Abou described the relationship between China and the EU as "maturing partnership," with trade as "the first taproot" of the ties.The 27-member EU is China's biggest trade partner while China is the EU's second-largest trade partner and most important source of imports. This year, China-EU trade has witnessed remarkable growth and bilateral trade volume exceeded 300 billion U.S. dollars for the first eight months, up 36.2 percent compared with the same period last year.However, Abou was not satisfied with the figures. Trade and investment are not big enough considering China's 1.3-billion population, said the ambassador. BEIJING, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Property prices in 70 major cities rose 9.3 percent in August year on year but were unchanged on a month-on-month basis from July, China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Friday.The year-on-year growth rate was one percentage point lower than the year-on-year growth rate in July, a statement on the NBS website said Friday.The year-on-year growth rate was the slowest in the past eight months this year.On a year-on-year basis, China's home prices rose 7.8 percent in December 2009, 9.8 percent in January 2010, 10.7 percent in February, 11.7 percent in March, 12.8 in April, 12.4 percent in May, 11.4 percent in June and 10.3 percent in JulyNew home prices rose 11.7 percent year on year in August, down 1.2 percentage points from July. New home prices in August were unchanged from July, too.Prices of second-hand homes rose 6.2 percent year on year in August, down 0.5 percentage points from July. Prices of second-hand homes in August increased on a month-on-month basis, up 0.1 percent from July.The Chinese government took measures in April to cool soaring home prices, including curbing lending to developers, limiting loans for third-home purchases and requiring higher down-payments for second-home purchases.

THATTA, Pakistan, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Sunday visited a mobile hospital set up by a Chinese search and rescue team in south Pakistan's Thatta, commending China's relief efforts for flood victims.The 55-member Chinese rescue team have set up tents and a mobile hospital at Thatta police headquarters late Saturday to provide medical services to the flood victims after they arrived at the district, about 100 km northeast of Karachi, Sindh Province.Thatta is now the worst flood-hit district where hundreds of thousands of people have been affected. China is the first foreign country to have sent a relief team to this region."They are working for humanity of the people who are suffering water-borne diseases...That is what we require now," Malik told Xinhua with reference to the team members who are mostly experienced doctors and nurses."They have very good medical facilities and good doctors. I think that is the best China could do," Malik said."China is always the truest and good friend (of Pakistan), and I always say 'Long live the Pakistan-China friendship'," he said.China has provided a total of 120 million yuan (17.7 million U.S. dollars) worth of humanitarian supplies to Pakistan in three batches.
