SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Metropolitan Transit System has launched an initiative to keep their buses and trolleys clean and their riders and employees safe.MTS officials said their ridership has dropped 75 percent since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, with officials are seeing a recent uptick in riders, the agency is implementing new health and safety measures.Nikki Jefferson has relied on the trolley to get to work for the last three years. When the cases of COVID-19 started popping up around San Diego County, she was nervous about getting back on board.“I still use hand sanitizer after my last stop, anytime I touch the button,” Jefferson said.To help control the spread of COVID-19, the MTS is now cleaning their 800 buses and 135 trolley cars twice a day. MTS is even using the deep-cleaning fogging technique to disinfect high-touch areas.Additionally, hand-washing stations are installed at their 54 transit stops and plexiglass barriers protect bus drivers from passengers.When on a bus or trolley, passengers are urged to practice social distancing whenever possible.Officials said all riders on buses or trolleys, and riders at stops or stations, will be required to wear face masks or coverings.MTS CEO Sharon Cooney said, “We’re going to educate all of our customers so that they know you can’t come on board without as mask for some kind of face covering.”It’s a move Jefferson agrees with as she spends most of her time riding the trolley.“It makes me feel safer and less of a chance that I’m going to catch COVID-19, since I have to go to work, but I don’t want to bring it to work with me or have it around me,” said Jefferson.MTS officials said they will educate the public about the face coverings. Some staff will also have face coverings on hand. But they add if someone refuses to wear one, they’ll look into issuing a citation.So far, 33 MTS employees have tested positive for the coronavirus; 22 have recovered and have returned to work. 1984

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Teachers across the U.S. are working to diversify the books in their classroom libraries, according to Harvard University and Collaborative Classrooms."It’s been more than 50 years since literacy experts first stressed the need for more diverse books in the classroom, and yet reading lists look surprisingly the same as they did in 1970," an excerpt from Harvard Ed Magazine reads.Mother Tancy Campbell wasn't exposed to characters who were African American growing up."It wasn't until high school that I started seeing books that had people that looked like me and started getting into black authors like Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou," Campbell says.Third-grade Teacher Kyle Luciani noticed the disparity last year when he started looking through his own classroom library. He went to work last year adding to his library. "I noticed almost all characters are animals or white," Luciani said. "I have books about biographies, about Jackie Chan, about Oprah Winfrey. Books on civil rights leaders ... Books such as don’t touch my hair, books on awareness of cultures."He said after George Floyd died, he added 0 worth of books on diversity and culture to his classroom.Last year, Luciani said he saw the electric change in his students."They love them! I mean I don’t think they’re always aware, 'Oh, it's someone of color,' but it's cool seeing them drawn to them automatically," Luciani said.In a 2015 Collaborative Classroom Diversity Review Book Project, 59% of books in more than 200,000 classrooms across the country had white characters and about 90% of authors were white. A team member of the project said this makes children of other ethnicities feel invisible or insignificant.Licensed psychologist Dr. Michelle Carcel is Latina and trained to teach diversity and inclusion courses. "I certainly take this to heart. It is so important to identify with others who are like you and you can see similarities and so you can also see diversity as a welcoming thing," said Carcel.Campbell believes diverse books will shape the future."I think it gives them confidence that they're the center of the story, I think that it shows them a hero can look like them," said Campbell. "I think it gives them stories of their background, that they might not have known before of their history and their culture that they didn't learn from their parents or grandparents."She has a diverse home library for her 9- and 5-year-old children. She said the latest book they read is about a girl in Africa who has to walk a long way to find water, bring it home, and boil it before she can take a sip. She said her daughter was touched by the book and filled with gratitude we have access to clean drinking water.Carcel said diverse books like this can break down systemic racism and heal generational trauma. 2829

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego and the San Diego Housing Commission announced details about a planned purchase of two hotels to convert into permanent housing for the homeless.After a six-month search, city officials announced the purchase of the Residence Inns in Mission Valley and Kearny Mesa. The price tag: 6.5 million.Scott Marshall of the San Diego Housing Commission says the project draws upon city, county and state funds to turn hotel rooms into 332 affordable apartments for the homeless, many of them currently staying at the convention center as part of the program, Operation Shelter To Home."This is not temporary shelter. They are permanent homes that will provide them a path out of the shelter and off the streets," said Marshall.Marshall says of the 29 sites considered, the two Residence Inns stood out."They were operating as hotels and in good condition. They didn't require a lot of work for people to move in," said Marshall.Federal housing vouchers will help residents with part of the rent. They'll also receive a host of wraparound services."Things like health care, Life skills training and employment assistance to help them get back on their feet and to a more stabile life," said Marshall.The hotels turned apartments reside in commercial areas, with many other motels and hotels as neighbors. SDSU marketing professor Miro Copic says any issues at the sites could turn into pubic relations problems."Tourists and travel agents could see it as a negative, and it may turn away people from the area. The city has to manage this effectively. If it does so, it may not have much of an impact on nearby hotels," said Copic.If the city council approves the purchase in October, the apartments could be ready by December. 1768

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Food and Drug Administration has recalled several types of tattoo ink after determining they were contaminated with bacteria. One of them is the popular black ink made by Dynamic Color. The FDA found that two of their lots tested positive for microorganisms. The recall includes all bottles of Scalpaink SC, Scalpaink PA, and Scalpaink AL basic black tattoo inks manufactured by Scalp Aesthetics. One lot of Color Art’s red Solid Ink-Diablo was also included. Tattoo shops across the country were contacted through their local health departments about the recall. One of the largest tattoo parlors in San Diego, SD Tattoo, says they got the email Wednesday morning and immediately searched through their inks.They did have the Dynamic black ink, but tattoo artist Nicki Ninteman said, "We checked all the lot numbers and all of ours are clean, so we’re good."She said they didn't have either of the other two brands in the shop.According to the FDA, people who have been tattooed with contaminated ink can experience rashes or lesions of red papules. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The local protester who appeared in a controversial video getting taken away in an unmarked San Diego Police van is now speaking out, as police conduct an internal investigation.“No one should feel fear from the people that are supposed to serve and protect us,” Shayla Piccini told 10News on Monday as she shared the story of her arrest from last Thursday on Park Boulevard.The video shows a protester being taken away in an unmarked van as one officer warns her family around her not to follow them or he will shoot.“You see both of her legs kind of go up in the air because she's going [into the van] head first. That’s way too much force needed for this 20-year-old lady here,” said attorney Dante Pride.“That whole ride, I was asking several questions like, ‘Who are you? Where are you taking me?’ I was getting stares and no answers,” said Piccini.Piccini said she spent the day at a protest in Downtown San Diego. After several hours, the group was walking back to their car when she saw several police motorcycles driving past them. At that moment, she held up her cardboard sign.San Diego police say detectives witnessed her step off the sidewalk and swing the sign at a passing motorcycle officer, which she denied.In the foreground of the video, you can see men in what look to be marked police vests. But the people who handcuffed and detained Piccini in an unmarked van, are in plain clothes.One man wearing military-style tactical gear can be heard in the video saying, "You follow us, you will get shot. You understand me?"Piccini's cousin Brandi Matthews said she thought he was talking to her. “When he said the words, ‘I'll shoot you,’ I automatically just dropped to my knees to demonstrate that I'm not trying to hurt anybody...I just want to know where they're taking my cousin,” she added.According to San Diego Police, the statement about shooting those attempting to follow was made by a SWAT officer who had a pepper ball device. SDPD also told 10News that his comment was a valid announcement of use of force.Police said due to the large crowd still in the area, and the detectives felt the need to leave immediately.Piccini spent the night in jail on suspicion of assault on an officer.
