BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) - Flooding was temporarily eased on the Yangtze River as the Three Gorges Dam on China's longest river saw water levels slightly down from its crest stage, the nation's flood control authority said Saturday.The water level at the dam fell to 158.54 meters as of 8 a.m. Saturday, 0.32 meters lower than its highest level of 158.86 meters which took place on Friday morning, according to data from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief HeadquartersThe water was flowing from the upper stream of the river at 31,000 cubic meters per second, said the office in a statement on its website.However, the water level was still 13.54 meters above the alarm level and is expected to increase again due to rainfall and water inflows from tributaries in the upper stream, the statement said.The office warned that the water level at the dam is very likely to exceed the historical level, if it rises again.Some of the country's other major rivers were also witnessing water levels surpassing their warning levels, including the Jialing River, Hanjiang River and Huaihe River, the statement said.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said China was at a "crucial stage" for flood control during an inspection tour in central China's Hubei Province that began July 23.He ordered local governments to adopt scientific measures to be well-prepared for "more serious floods and disasters" .Floods in China this year have left 742 people dead and 367 missing as of Friday, according to the flood control office.

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's Supreme People's Court (SPC) has urged more efforts to clear the backlog of cases as a campaign to complete long-delayed verdicts had seen positive results.Various local departments were urged to be "fully aware" of the importance of the speedy execution of court orders and tackling the backlog of cases, said a statement released Tuesday after a meeting on backlogged cases.The meeting was jointly held by the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the SPC.Statistics cited in the statement show that since a campaign on clearing backlogged cases started in November 2008, long-delayed verdicts for more than 333,000 property cases had been completed.In addition, more than 3 million cases not involving properties had also been cleared.The two organizations urged police, banks, financial administrative departments, tax departments and other units that might be involved in case execution to fully support and coordinate the enforcement of court orders.The statement also called for harsher punishments and restrictions in real estate, credit rating and other fields for defendants who refused to follow court orders."The campaign is in accordance with the people's interests... and will have positive effects on promoting social harmony and stability," said Wang Lequan, deputy secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission, at the meeting.

CHONGQING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered landslides in southwest China Monday blocked a river, creating a barrier lake in Chongqing Municipality and forcing the evacuation of more than 12,000 people, flood control authorities said.The landslide blocked the Luojiang River in Chengkou County early Monday, creating a dam holding 15 to 20 million cubic meters of water, said Xing Hua, a Chengkou Water Resources Bureau spokesman.As of 5 a.m. Monday, the barrier lake was five-square-kilometers in area and 18-meters deep, said Xing.Photo taken on July 19, 2010 shows the Ciqikou Town surrounded by flood water of the Jialingjiang River, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. BEIJING,July 11 (Xinhua) -- China issued a new anti-corruption regulation Sunday to require officials to report changes in their marital status, the whereabouts of their spouses and children if they have moved abroad, personal incomes, housing as well as their family' s investments.The new regulation was issued by the General Office of China's State Council and the General Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.The regulation defines "officials" as those leaders holding official ranks of and above county level in government agencies, democratic parties, public institutions, state owned enterprises and state holding enterprises.The new regulation requires officials to report changes in their marital status and the location of their spouses and children if they have moved abroad, within 30 days after such a change takes place.Specifically, officials should report their ownership of passports or visas and their children's marital status if they are married to foreigners or residents of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.Officials should also report any businesses their spouses and children are involved in, both within China and abroad.The new regulation also requires officials to report their ownership of property, including property in their spouses' or children's names, their family's investment in financial assets and in enterprises.According to the regulation, if officials fail to report honestly or in a timely fashion, they would face punishment to various degrees, even as harsh as removal of official ranks.The regulation also ordered party organizations at all levels to strengthen management and supervision over officials to guarantee the implementation of the regulation.This regulation is considered an important measure to ensure strict self-discipline for Party and government officials and to improve the intra-Party supervision system.
