AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Faculty and staff at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan are being trained to fight active shooters in a unique way – by using hockey pucks. University police are conducting the training sessions, which were organized by the OU Union and the American Association of University Professors, to improve classroom safety for all. The use of hockey pucks allows those vulnerable to an active shooter attack to fight back with something heavy that will also cause a distraction, according to OU Police Chief Mark Gordon. "Hockey pucks provide the ability to be carried in briefcases or backpacks, are not considered a weapon and will meet the goal of distracting the shooter,” Gordon said. The OU Union has distributed hockey pucks to 800 of its members and will distribute an additional 1,700 pucks to students. "Part of the strategy for fighting is you need to create a distraction to give yourself time as a group in a classroom to rush the gunman so you can get your hands on the gun and take it away from the shooter," Gordon said.Although police and organizers find the pucks to be a good solution to the threat of a mass shooting, some students on campus disagree."I found it, at first, absurd," said Adam Kalajian, a third-year student at OU. "What good will it do? I mean, there’s an armed person coming in, why would you chuck a puck at them? What’s it going to do? Nothing." Jacob Gora, a fifth-year senior, echoed the same sentiment. "If I was to give you a puck and I had a gun, would I be able to take you out easily?" Gora asked. "I mean, a puck isn’t going to distract me or stop me from shooting someone."According to a release, the pucks also serve a second purpose. Ashland University in Ohio is offering a new ,000 scholarship to talented Fortnite players."Fortnite Battle Royale" will be offered in fall 2018 as part of the university's esports program.The AU esports team will be the first known program in the country to add the game to its official offerings. Head Coach Josh Buchanan is excited to add the popular game to the college's gaming titles."Fortnite appeals to both the core and casual gaming audience," said Buchanan in a news release. "We're excited to provide this platform for gamers who want to showcase their skills in a more competitive space."The team at Ashland will arrange four-player teams that practice regularly and compete together.Scholarships will be awarded to players based on skill level and academic requirements.The university plans to conduct open tryouts for Fortnite players next school year. Ashland already offers League of Legends, Overwatch, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Rocket League in their esports program. The coach hopes eventually other schools will for programs to set up collegiate leagues for the team to compete against.  1184

But if you take a closer look you might ask, what's up with that?When Naomi Frierson walked into her local Walmart and down the aisle, her focus was getting her mom a box of her favorite cereal."I just picked it up and I kind of looked at it," Frierson said. "And I figured it was one of those special edition type of boxes. ... I didn't think much of it."But when she got home, her husband noticed."We proceed to look at it further and realize that not only are there mugshots but they're serial killers," Frierson said. "Not the C-E-R-E-A-L kind unfortunately."The box of "Life" cereal is covered with people synonymous with death. Larry, the Quaker Oats mascot is Jeffrey Dahmer. And instead of being made with 20 whole grains, it's made with 20 whole brains."And then on the nutrition panel you've got stuff like instead of cholesterol it says chloroform," Frierson said. "Down here it says cyanide."Frierson said she was creeped out, but her husband loved it."He immediately recognized all of the different players in the game," Frierson said. "And he thought it was just the coolest thing ever and assured me that it must be art."He was right. The box was a class project made by Lauren Miller, a senior art student at the University of South Florida."I kind of just wanted it to blend in with everything else," Miller said. "I took a bunch of pictures that I found online of serial killers and I used Photoshop to add them to the Life cereal box. I just thought it would be interesting to use Life cereals since these people did take away lives."Miller has a large version of the box in her studio but wanted to see how people reacted to this smaller version in the community.Frierson said, "I had people on my personal Facebook when I posted that thing like, 'Oh my gosh I need to have that. How can I get one? Are there more?'"Frierson said she's keeping this box, and Miller is exploring creating more to sell.Miller said she left a note on the box saying it was art and had already been paid for. As students from across the country prepare to return to classrooms in the middle of a pandemic, a nationwide school nurse shortage has health experts concerned about how well some districts will be able to handle potential outbreaks of COVID-19.Linda Mendonca oversees the National Association of School Nurses. As she thinks about empty classrooms beginning to fill back up with students, she can’t help but be filled with anxiety.“We don’t have a road map for all of this, so when you don’t have a road map, that makes it a little more challenging,” she said.School nurses will be playing a critical role in the reopening of schools. They’re being asked to monitor kids for COVID-19 symptoms and even keep track of absentee rates to spot potential trends. In some cases, school nurses will help local health departments with contact tracing if an outbreak occurs at a school.But a nationwide nurse school nurse shortage puts a lot of that in jeopardy.“In the midst of a pandemic, there should be a nurse in every school, and there’s not,” Mendonca explained.About 25 percent of the nation’s schools will start this year without a school nurse. It’s a startling statistic that has public health officials particularly concerned, in the middle of a pandemic.The average school nurse makes about ,000. There’s also a simple funding problem. School nurses are often the first to get cut when districts need to eliminate positions. The need is so great, that the National Association of School Nurses is advocating for 10,000 new nurses in the next federal stimulus bill.“The school nurse is so important that there needs to be a full-time nurse in school every day at all schools,” said Jenny Gormley, who’s served as a school nurse in Massachusetts for years.Gormley’s hope is that in the face of this pandemic, districts across the country will find ways to support nurses with both PPE and funding.“We all want students back learning, but we want to do it safely,” she added.As parents attempt to send their kids safely back to school, school nurses could be one of the best prescriptions for success. 2114
