SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A state measure just signed into law prohibits landlords and HOAs from discriminating against tenants and members who display religious items on their doors. The new rule stems from a dispute in Little Italy between residents and their HOA. The law "protects the display of a religious item within 15x30 square inches, as long as it does not interfere with the opening or closing of the door," Matt Wagner, with the Anti-Defamation League. The display must not "interfere with building operations and must be posted do to a sincere religious belief," says Matt Wagner, with the Anti-Defamation League.  The new law will take effect on January 1, 2020. The bill was written after a Jewish family in Little Italy was told by their HOA to take down the mezuzah on their door. The HOA has not been named.The posting of the mezuzah is required of all observant Jews. If the display is not posted, it renders a Jewish family essentially unable to live in the home. The Anti-Defamation League stepped in asking the HOA to allow the posting of the religious symbol, but they refused. The new law applies to HOA's and all landlords throughout the state.  "Just because you are a renter… doesn't mean you lose your right to religious freedom or expression," says Assemblymember Todd Gloria. "You are entitled to the same rights and the same protections as a tenant. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A winter storm warning was issued for San Diego County’s mountains as a cold storm hit the region Monday..The warning is in place from 8 a.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.“The agency says heavy snow and strong winds are expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the evening commute on Monday. Tree branches could fall as well,” forecasters said.Total snow accumulations of two to six inches are expected with localized amounts of 12 to 18 inches. The heaviest snow is expected to impact areas above 5,500 feet, however, some snow is expected down to 4,500 feet.Accompanying the snow are heavy winds of 20 to 40 miles per hour.RELATED: Check today's forecast in your area“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the National Weather Service advised.A high surf advisory also takes the place of a beach hazards statement as the storm approaches. The advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 10 a.m. Wednesday for San Diego County coastal areas.Surf begins to build Sunday, peaking Monday afternoon through Tuesday, the agency says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Americans are spending more and more time commuting for every day while others aren’t commuting at all, according to a new report. The report, released Thursday by Apartment List, claims that the number of “super commuters,” people who travel more than 90 minutes to work each way, has increased by more than 31 percent since 2005. In the same time frame, the number of Americans working from home has increased by 76 percent, according to the report. Another California city, Stockton, pulled ahead of all other metros in the U.S. with more than 11 percent of its population considered super commuters. Apartment List says the cheaper cost of living when compared to the San Francisco Bay Area is a contributing factor. While the share of super commuters in San Diego may be modest, some people have decided not to commute at all. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An El Cajon woman watched in disbelief Sunday night as her Amazon package was stolen by the very people who delivered it. Cheryl Cook broke her ankle over the weekend and ordered a large ice pack off Amazon. She chose same-day delivery so that she could start icing her ankle as soon as possible.Cook was able to track the driver’s location and could see when he had arrived at her home. She says the delivery started off strangely when the driver put the package on the front lawn rather than the porch. He then got back in the car, put his flashers on, and drove a few feet up the street. Moments later, a second person got out of the car and stole the package. “I’m injured, I’m home, I can’t get out my own front door, and then my package is stolen by the guy who dropped it off,” said Cook. She shared the video online and heard similar stories. “I wanted people to know what was going on, there might be other people that have lost packages and wondered where they went, and this was very clear-cut; it went right back in the guy’s car.”In a statement to 10News, Amazon said:“This does not reflect the high standards we have for delivery partners. This individual is no longer delivering Amazon packages, and we have reached out to the customer to make things right.”A spokesperson went on to tell 10News that their Amazon Flex delivery partners are thoroughly vetted through a comprehensive, multi-state criminal background check and a review of their motor vehicle records. They say the person who stole Cook’s package passed their background check and delivered Amazon packages for less than a month.
