PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — An elementary school principal was arrested on Thursday for allegedly stealing 0 from a 9-year-old child.Pasco County deputies arrested Connerton Elementary School principal Edward John Abernathy.The Sheriff's Office say that on Oct. 23, the 9-year-old student, who is mentally handicapped brought some of his parents' money to school. When teachers realized how much money the child had, they took the money, counted it and put it in the principal's office.When the mother of the child went to school to get the money, deputies say the principal gave her only ,200 not the ,100 her child had brought to school."Subsequent investigation by deputies determined the principal kept the 0 difference," the Pasco County Sheriff's Office wrote in a press release.Deputies booked the 50-year-old Abernathy into the Pasco County Jail on one charge of grand theft.Officials with Pasco County Schools say that Abernathy will be placed on administrative leave as they investigate. 1048

PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man suspected of smuggling several people into the U.S. from Mexico led Border Patrol agents on a chase before injecting himself with heroin, the agency says. According to the agency, the incident happened around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Pine Valley immigration checkpoint. After approaching the checkpoint in a 2001 Mercedes sedan with five passengers, the man was referred to a secondary inspection area before speeding away. After sliding off the road along I-8 near the Pine Valley Road exit, all five of the passengers ran out of the vehicle and into nearby brush. The driver, however, stayed in the sedan and began injecting himself with a black substance later identified as heroin. He was arrested on smuggling charges and is currently undergoing a medically monitored detox. The group included two men, two women, and a 16-year-old boy. They were uninjured in the crash and taken to a Border Patrol station to be processed for removal. “This is another example of the dangerous acts human smugglers perform for financial gain and how they show no regard for human life,” said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke. “Fortunately, this pursuit came to a safe conclusion and ended with the driver in custody.” 1643

Usually that is limited to animals like frogs or mice.A homeowner in Ohio called police when she found two fawns in her pool. The woman said the deer had been in the water for more than an hour as she tried to get them out with no luck.Officers were able to corral the deer to the water’s edge and pull them out. The rescue was captured on body camera one of the officers was wearing. “The deer were tired, but happy, as you can hear them let out a “cheer” of appreciation after being rescued!” a Facebook post from the City of Parma Police Department reads.Both deer ran off back into the wild on their own. 713

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The driver of a stolen ambulance has been nabbed after leading police on a chase through Philadelphia that lasted more than an hour. A police spokesman says the man tried to run over an officer who shot him three times before the chase began. The officer was struck and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say the man stole the emergency vehicle as authorities responded to reports of a domestic disturbance requiring medical attention at a motel.His name wasn't immediately released as he has yet to be charged with a crime. PATERSON, N.J. -- A tiny poodle named Bear is clinging to life after being tossed from a vehicle in New Jersey over the weekend, a local shelter said.The Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge described the dog as emaciated and matted when he was found lying in the street "after being discarded like trash," the shelter wrote on Facebook. It appears he suffered "a lifetime of neglect," they wrote.The dog was thrown from a car window around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, near 927 Market St. in Paterson, the social media post said.As of Sunday morning, the poodle was in the intensive care unit at Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus.The shelter said Bear suffered pelvic fractures, skin lesions from road rash and a possible herniated diaphragm.
