LOS ANGELES — Britney Spears wants to be freed from her father. In a recent series of court maneuvers, Spears has sought greater say over her life and affairs, which for 12 years have been under the control of a court conservatorship run mostly by her father, James Spears. Tuesday, a Los Angeles judge will hear arguments from Britney Spears' lawyer and possibly from the celebrity herself that her father should be removed in favor of a corporate finance company. James Spears argues in his own filings that as her conservator he has saved his daughter's fortune and career. 584

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - As part of its stepped-up response to a surge in COVID-19 cases, California is tightening its requirements for face coverings, issuing revised rules that mandate everyone wear a mask at all times outside the home when within six feet of people from other households. The revised guidance issued Monday states that residents "must wear face coverings when they are outside the home," unless they are more than six feet away from other people.People who are outdoors but not close to anyone else do not have to wear a mask, but they must have one with them to put on in case they come within six feet of other people. The rules apply to anyone aged 2 or older, but exempt people with specific medical conditions and those who are hearing impaired or communicating with a hearing-impaired person.Other exemptions to the rule include:-- people in a car alone or with members of their own household-- people working alone in an office or room-- people who are "actively eating or drinking"-- workers who must wear respiratory protectionThe state has long called on residents to wear face coverings in public, particularly while in close contact with others. The new rules broaden previous guidance that provided recommendations on when people should wear masks. The state rule essentially mirrors the guidance in Los Angeles County, which says residents "should use a clean face covering anytime they will be in contact with other people who are not household members in public or private spaces." 1518

LOS ANGELES - A representative for Mel Gibson says the actor spent a week in a Los Angeles hospital in April after testing positive for COVID-19. She posted on twitter "Jamie died today. We're heartbroken. He lived a beautiful, impactful life (and) was loved by many. He will be deeply missed. As his wife of 32 (years), I'm most grateful for the two spectacular children we raised together. I don't know what we wouldn't done (without) them over the past 2 (years)." 731

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Firefighters struggled Friday to contain a big Southern California wildfire amid shifting winds, forcing authorities to expand evacuations as forecasters extended fire weather warnings into the weekend. The blaze dubbed the Maria Fire erupted late Thursday northwest of Los Angeles during what had been expected to be the tail end of a siege of Santa Ana winds that fanned destructively across the region, but a tug-of-war developed between those offshore gusts and the return of some onshore flow from the ocean."It has been an uphill battle ever since," Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen told a midday news conference. "We are finding that the winds are starting to change and that presents its own challenges all by itself."Wind shifts expose new areas of fuel to the fire, bringing "a pretty significant firefight," he said.MAP: CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES 886
