SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A recent study from Volusion ecommerce software shows San Diego has one of the highest percentages of people who work remotely or work from home. Technology has provided flexibility in how and where we do our jobs, but when we consider how to ‘Make it in San Diego,’ we found working remotely can also put money back in your pocket. Ashley Goggins is a prime example and is one of over 8 million people in the United States who work remotely. “I’m a customer success manager for a software company,” says Goggins.Her company is headquartered in Chicago, but Ashley does her job from her living room in San Diego. “I typically wake up around 6:00 in the morning, and my calls start coming in around 6:30,” adds Goggins. “The great part about that is I don’t have to spend time getting ready, eating breakfast right away, or sitting in the car.”Goggins is part of a growing trend. Especially in the employment sectors of management, business, and science where working remotely is a valuable option for some employees. “Many industries that are prevalent in San Diego lend themselves to remote work,” says Kevin Fowler. Kevin Fowler is a writer for Volusion and author of the study. His research shows San Diego is one of the top cities in the nation when it comes to employees working remotely full-time. And for many trying to ‘Make it in San Diego,’ working remotely has its financial benefits. “The peripheral costs of working on location add up to about ,000 per year,” says Fowler.That’s right. A survey from Career Builder found that the simple act of going to work, including wear and tear on your car, gas, fair for the bus or train, lunch, even coffee adds up to about ,300 a year. “I haven’t done the math, but it does cut some costs down,” says Goggins. “I actually just contacted my car insurance company to reduce the amount of miles, so my premium is lower.”Granted, there are some negatives associated with working remotely. For some, the opportunity for promotion only comes with working onsite or at least collaborating with upper management. And then, there is also the simple need for face-to-face contact.“Sometimes, I go days at a time without seeing another human being, so I do make an effort to get out of the house at least once a day to go to a coffee shop and meet up with friends,” says Goggins.Working remotely has become such a popular trend. Yet, another study from Ivy League professors found some employees were willing to take an 8% pay cut for the opportunity to work from home. 2545

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man suspected of trying to burn down an Albertson's sign in El Cajon pleaded not guilty in Superior Court Friday.Joshua Edgell Wright was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly set fire to the sign at the grocery store off Broadway. A local business owner followed him to a Smart and Final in Lakeside, where he was apprehended. Wright appeared in court via video conference and said nothing. Records show he's been charged with 16 crimes in the last three years, including for petty theft, shoplifting, and resisting arrest.Deputy District Attorney Brandon Owens declined to discuss Wright's criminal history. Judge Daniel Lamborn set bail at ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego County public defense attorney is accused of providing a felon with a firearm, according to local law enforcement.  San Diego Police confirm that Andrea Bayer was arrested on August 1 and booked into Las Colinas women’s jail on charges related to selling, supplying or delivering a firearm to either a convicted felon or someone wanted on a felony warrant. She was released the same day on bond.  On the State Bar of California’s website, it shows that the 37 year-old’s license is still active and that she works as an Alternate Public Defender for San Diego County. The District Attorney’s Office says Bayer has not been charged and the case remains under review. A Group Communications Officer with San Diego County sent us the following statement: “The County of San Diego cannot comment on personnel matters. Ms. Bayer is currently on leave from her position pending the outcome of the investigation. The Public Defender believes in the presumption of innocence and has faith in the judicial process.” 1070

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego company has a solution for tired employees or students -- they've created "napping pods" which can be rented by the hour."It's a place to go, escape from a hectic environment and recharge," said Hohm CEO Nikolas Woods.The pods are small, just 43.5 square feet each. They include a fully-furnished twin-size bed, mirror, charging stations, fan, lights and light and noise dampening curtains."Every piece was put together to create the most comfort," said Woods.Right now, Woods has just three pods in service, all on the University of Arizona campus. He hopes to expand to more college campuses around the country.He's also trying to get large corporations to buy some for their employees, and he's trying to get some places in major airports as well."A lot of employees could use a break," Woods said. "Wouldn't it be better to go somewhere and recharge, get your productivity level up?"People can find and book the pods through the Hohm website. It costs around per hour, with a 30 minute minimum and 4 hour max.Woods hopes to launch an app this spring to make booking even easier.He said each installation will have an attendant nearby to help people check in, clean the pods and enforce a strict one-person-per-pod rule. 1266
